As part of my apology to William a book suggestion:
If you are after a very well presented, easy reading, pictorial history of Australian thoroughbred racing from 1788 to 1998, I recommend the 300 page coffee table book They're Racing! (c1999) - you will still find copies on ebay
I would not describe it as 'thrilling' but it is a good looking book which contains numerous well written anecdotes

John Hunt (iconic race caller from Western Australia) also has a pretty good book.
