Forbury Park again have not enough nominations for their meeting this week. Along with a couple of meetings in Canterbury and Southland recently it seems this may continue for a while.
There can be many and varied reasons why the meetings are not attracting nominations and most have susbstance.
From a verbal survey I did to 15 Otago, Southland and Canterbry trainers this week, most trainers said that the stakes were too low to travel for, when a local higher stake race is only a week away.
All of the trainers stated that they had less numbers in training. One said he has dropped from 35 horses to 6! Another said that he was purely concentrating on young horses. Basically the rest said they just didn't have the owners they used to.
About half the trainers did state that the weather had played a significant part in not having horses fit enough for the early season racing.
A lot of food for thought for Otago/Southland clubs.
