Lukey had homework other night "Change these fractions into mixed numbers". His Mum was trying to explain it to him but he wasn't getting it. I was on the couch watching something on telly. They were both getting more and more frustrated. Tried to keep out of it but eventually stuck me nose in. Pretended hadn't heard what was going on so said "What's the problem?" "It's these stupid fractions dad. I just don't get it".

Question 1: 37/8

"OK Lukey lets say 37 horses enter for a race meeting". He quickly cut me off with "Dad this is not about horses. It's about fractions".

"Be patient young man. 37 horses enter for a race meeting. Each race must have 8 starters. How many races will there be and how many miss out?"

"But dad it's not about horses".

"Answer the question Lukey"

After 5 seconds or so he reluctantly says "There will be 4 races and 5 will miss out".

"Write that down" says me.

"How many races?" 4 "How many miss out?" 5 "Ok now draw one of them slanty line things. How many in each race?" 8

4 5/8

"Go to the top of the class young man!!"

He did the next 9 himself. I checked them afterwards. Got them all right except the last one.

Last one was 5/4. His answer $2.25 :rolleyes:

Thats a good yarn Toohard. Racing can be applied to many branches of mathematics, however subtraction would be the most common form in my case.

Did you get the glare from Mum on the last answer?:o

Pretty to watch Paul ;). You should get Pecky to publish that in HRI.
