View Full Version : Where does all the prizemoney come from?

An ordinary Wednesday/midweek meet at Sandown today (4th ranked Melbourne metro track) and yet there were 2 races with $80k prizemoney.
We cannot compete with that.

Yes we can Kevin! Our yearlings are probably one tenth of a thoroughbred and our training fees would be at most one quarter of theirs. We have few add on costs, however the thoroughbred owner is hit with all manner of cost; they can't even get their horse to race day without having to fork out for some horse transporter. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence :-)

Regards

Mark

I still think more people are attracted to the $70m Powerball jackpot than the week 1 $3m which it goes back to this week
The costs are undoubtedly much more with the gallopers but it is the Dream. I have friends that are happy to have small shares in lots of horses, sometimes less than 5%
It becomes absurd when we have $236,250 maidens at the Gold Coast today - the 15 starters combined have not won much more than that in their careers so far!

The Magic Millions raceday is a joke but.

I did not know where to post this so here will do.
I drove past the Emirates Park farm at Murrurundi (Nth of Scone) today - what a sight to behold
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY

Oh to have the gallops problems
On a day where Randwick offered over $3M in prizemoney and Flemington offered closer to $4M
Peter Moody was expressing some concern that with the Gp2 Sires Produce only offering $200k it may not stay Gp2 for much longer

Sure it is a Sales race but they are running a $500k race at 12.10pm today, sure the scheduling makes sense as it is a 2yo race but what an embarrassment of riches

It was a Group Day at Flemington and Randwick
and the 2nd Vic meet was at little Murtoa (population 865)
and they had a $100k race there today
Unbelievable

BUT>>>for the second year in a row, meeting abandoned due to track issues...last year a hole in the track, this year a burst water pipe.

I know it is Caulfield's carnival time and we have come to expect it midweek for the Flemington carnival but $500k at a midweeker is unreal

Very impressive. Apart from the Cup the Wednesday meeting shits all over the Sat meeting.

At Randwick today, despite halving the prize for some of the big races, they are racing for about $6M. That will probably be over ¼ of HRV's total prizemoney for the next 12mths during these Covid-19 times (assuming we can still race)
How can they/do they do it?

This time, I was meaning this specific Saturday. How can they afford to pay out $6m in these uncertain times - I suppose they will say that they cut it back by a couple of million but many ASX companies seem to be suspending their dividends altogether

I can't imagine us having a $400k race go ahead after receiving only 3 Acceptors.
And a $15m race on Saturday (albeit a slots race) is half Vic's harness prizemoney for the year!

About $30m bet on the Cup on the Vic tote alone (including the Quaddie)
Amazing when you think punters are prepared to bet on a race where we have a horse starting favourite that we have never seen in this country
or a winner that has only ever had one start in this country - last year's Cup
It is just another form of Lotto
I love it but horses breaking down is hard to take

After all the riches of the recent carnivals there is still $500,000 on offer for the Cranbourne Cup today - Cranbourne

Coolmore Australia is thrilled to announce an exciting incentive that will see the winner of the first qualifying two or three-year-old race from the first crop of Justify awarded a brand new Ferrari.

They don't go things in half measures the gallops.
What would an equivalent harness promotion be for?

The Victorian secondary country meeting at Swan Hill on Saturday includes a $150k race and a $125k race.
They would be Group 1's in harness dollars

Thankfully I was wrong about the above
Swan Hill have a meeting today AND tomorrow
Still a $150k and $125k race at Swan Hill on a Friday is pretty amazing

Sydney today and the first of the $Million plus races is on at 12.50, yes 12.50! - they have so much prizemoney, it is difficult to spread it around
