Is that a bad thing? That way they get paid for the work they do rather than making them work overtime on salary. Not to mention the rate is darn good in my eyes.. but I work in advertising where hours are long and salary is not reflective

    Yes it is.

And a reminder to one's self to never go to Vancouver looking for work.

Didnt the employer advertise the pay rate?......not sure how that is supposed to get anybody.

It is simple maths using the standard going rate which i previously supplied.....$600 a week divided by 60 hrs per week =$10 an hr. I can imagine all the applicants really knocking the barn door down for that. Will the wage include superannuation and 10 days sick leave a year or will it be on a contract rate? There are laws regarding employment/basic wages etc in this country which a few employers like to disregard. Some large employers have been caught lately doing just that. I think the basic wage for a person over the age of 18 is about $17 per hr and that would equate to about 33 hrs per week based on the $600 weekly rate. What happens when the stable is not winning? I am also talking about a stablehand who can most probably do fast work, so they are practically experienced and trustworthy around the horses. The moral of this story is that if you want a cross between Gary Hall snr and jnr for $10 an hr...forget it.

Shez all rock will be mighty hard to beat at Melton in the fillies classic on Friday night. Her heat time at Bendigo was 3 secs faster than the boys and that was her first race.

I think younger people have come to accept a lack of appreciation and remuneration for dedication nowadays Katie. I have 2 children around 30 who have Masters and serious jobs - one in HR with a BIG bank and one in public relations with a very prestigious club I won't name. They often go above and beyond especially in hours and it seems to me that they do not get fantastic remuneration. I believed in Unions and it seems to me that governments have pretty much beaten the union movement and you young people are suffering as a result - the business pages of late have regularly said that the lack of wages growth is hurting the economy. LOL seems fair that businesses are suffering too for not paying employees enough

In that case, our wages arent the barrier here for applicants. Must be that there are just no workers out there to apply.

Kev, expectations these days in some industries are just insane. Should have been a computer programmer.

That may be the perception that there are not enough workers to apply but in reality work is tough to get in WA especially the last 2 years with the massive mining downturn. Working for a stable is not a brilliant career move unless you are very talented or just cant get any other type of work, it is not rocket science either. Job security is basically nil compared to a "normal job" and unions dont get a look in. All stable hands i have met/been associated with have been good workers and have an enthusiastic approach to their work and put up with a bit of shite along the way but they do move on after a while looking for something better.

The other thing which crossed my mind was that the industry has tightened up a bit over the last couple of years by means that the big stables are winning most of the races now and squeezing out the smaller trainers and even breeders so that means less work and the good stable/hands and foremans' are staying put if they have a job with the bigger stables. But $17-$22 should be reasonable pay for a semi-skilled worker. I have seen people on various forums actually looking for work in the racing industry but that was a few months ago and they have either scored a job or given up. It surprises me a bit that the positions have not been filled. I dont believe a semi-skilled person should work extra hrs in their work day for no pay. The rules are totally different for professional people in banks, govt offices etc. who work extra hrs without pay but thats another story.

    An 1150m race at Bendigo!
Why don't we reduce it to 700m and substitute dogs for horses

10yo Nugget Pan has won 9 out of 79 (only really been racing 4 and a bit seasons) with 23 placings and is definitely a Swan Hill specialist. 6 of his wins have been at the track
There were two 10yo winners for the day

We do not have many deadheats nowadays but the 3yo's produced one in the first today
