PeterProfit is suggesting that Joe Conolly 'has something' whether that be training nouse or something else and he bases this on the way he improves older horses but let's be fair and analyse their form previous to Joe getting them

Silly Sid - no surprise he won in 1.56.2, as then 7yo, he was having only his 6th start (has still only had 11) and a year before that win he had run 1.56.1 in a trial
Fortunate Son - PP is only complaining about Joe making him consistent - give the man a break
Schouten Island - he cites the 1.53.0 win in July but 2yrs before that he had run 1.53.2 when 3rd at Albion Park
Mister Magic Man - PP marvels at him winning in 1.51.4 saying he had never won in faster than 1.56.6 BUT 2yrs before he had run 1.53.2 when he drew badly and had a hard run before finishing 7th, so we are not talking miracles
Art Tutor - as a 6yo has gone pretty close to 1.50 when beaten by Muscle Factory last November BUT this is a horse that as a 2yo having his second start back in 2017 rated 1.56 when finishing 7th, it is not mind boggling to think that 4yrs later he could be capable of about 6 seconds improvement on a faster track over a shorter distance

There be a lot more variables than 'times' in trots as you know Kev. Barrier positions, different tracks, race tempo, where they are in the run.... heaps more.

    Eg...

    Horse can go 29, 29, 29, 29 = 1.56
    But can't go 30, 30, 28, 28 = 1.56

29 as quick as they can go.

When race is run per 1 they'll be competitive. When run per 2 they won't.... be beaten bout 20m+ in fact. Same time but competitive in one and not the other? So comparing times like that a fruitless exercise?

So true Paul but what it can show us is what a horse is capable of if it gets the right run

The welcome rain is playing a bit of havoc, the last at Stawell today was abandoned and the last 4 at Mildura appear to be in some doubt

It's a long way to and from Mildura for many for no result. The same for the scheduled last race at Stawell...Leigha Miller went from Bendigo to Horsham and back.

What happens....is the stake money divided equally among the horses entered?

PS Thanks to Kevin for fixing up my user name and password problems. No fun being shut out.

Good to have you back Noel. Very unfortunate at Stawell as the last race was to be the $9,500 feature, the Laidlaw Family Pace

I wonder how much rain Cranbourne had to force tonight's meeting to be abandoned
Nearby Frankston had had 17mm in the 4˝hrs up to 7pm. You wouldn't really think that that would do it
I am down in Melbourne not far from The Dandenongs and although we have had some incredibly dark skies, we have had little more than drizzle

I can assure you Kev it is not an issue of how much rain but how much and how quick it fell. 44mm from 9:00 AM seems to have fallen around Cranbourne, most within a couple of hours. I was in Sale late afternoon and 30mm fell in no time.
