Why does our speed explosion continue?
Is it because the quality of our horses was so far behind the rest of the harness world?
The oldest of Melton's 3 main pacing records is only a bit over a year old (14 months).
The same is true for the 6 trotting records
Compare this to Flemington where despite having 10 main distances the youngest of their records is more than 4 years old (50 months)
For a while we could put it down to improved track but Melton for example is 8 years old now
I guess part of it is that our tracks offer more consistent surfaces than grass but the difference between the codes is somewhat surprising
Maybe the standardbred horse is/was further from reaching its breeding potential
