    Time to get this one out again I reckon.........

    The Riders in the Stand

    There's some that ride the Robbo style, and bump at every stride;
    While others sit a long way back, to get a longer ride.
    There's some that ride like sailors do, with legs and arms, and teeth;
    And some ride on the horse's neck, and some ride underneath.
    But all the finest horsemen out -- the men to Beat the Band --
    You'll find amongst the crowd that ride their races in the Stand.
    They'll say "He had the race in hand, and lost it in the straight."
    They'll show how Godby came too soon, and Barden came too late.
    They'll say Chevalley lost his nerve, and Regan lost his head;
    They'll tell how one was "livened up" and something else was "dead" --
    In fact, the race was never run on sea, or sky, or land,
    But what you'd get it better done by riders in the Stand.
    The rule holds good in everything in life's uncertain fight;
    You'll find the winner can't go wrong, the loser can't go right.
    You ride a slashing race, and lose -- by one and all you're banned!
    Ride like a bag of flour, and win -- they'll cheer you in the Stand.
    Banjo Patterson.

    Nice one danno. Did you know I rate the drive of Luke McCarthy on Mr Feelgood in the 2010 Miracle Mile higher than the drive of Hall Jnr on ITMQ in this years Inter. I'm pretty confident Ive credited McCarthy for the Feelgood drive on this forum before as proof of that. Nice poem nevertheless.

    The main message of Banjo's poem for me Brenno, is the " benefit of hindsight" thing. I actually thought Ian Dornauf was a victim of circumstances the other night and erred on the side of caution, after all the horse was first up in a basic race and Royal Verdict has shown before he is not the same horse up facing the breeze as he is when held up for a run.
    The leaders ran the middle half in 64, nobody could/would cart him up into the race, trying to make ground down the back when the leaders carved the second last quarter in about 28 would have busted his horse.......the list adds up to Royal Verdict had no hope from about 1,000 metres out. And Ian owns the horse, why would he risk busting him first up? The horse is looking for better races than that one this preparation.

    Cheers
    Dan

    Starting to feel my Royal Verdict bag was right in the money. The horse is going like a leer jet. It was driven so dead that night it's not funny. The B Jones/Cousin Dupreez baggers must have missed this one. Their thread did and the horse hasnt won in the next four starts. Hhhmmmmm.

    G'day Grant. There is certainly merit in your claims about Royal Verdict. Just watched a few of his recent replays, his win two back when he just got there in a tick over 2.00. was a big win under the circumstances (even tho' the small field suited) compared to his previous run when the horse was set an impossible task. Mind you when he is driven back the horse seems to switch off into a state of consciousness akin to being in a coma.
