    South Australia present our future

    Q. Why has South Australia gone from a breeding industry giant of the 70,s-80,s to a minnow in 2014.

    A. One glaringly obvious cause is the lack of opportunity for owners of mares to recoup their investment within South Australia.
The South OZ administration has programmed 8 mare/filly races for the entire state of South Australia for the month of Feb 2014. Previous months were no better. This includes all available mares/filly races for both pacers and trotters.

The question has to be asked, how can you sustain any form of an industry with out encouraging some form of financial return to those who race mares.
Obviously people retain mares with the intention to breed latter. No financial return hence No funds to breed hence No breeding industry.

The breeding figures reflect this, as a comparison:

    2011-12 Breeding season: Stallions 8 Services 30 Foals 161
    1981-82 Breeding season: Stallions 138 Services 1353 Foals 942

It is incumbent upon the industry to programme more mares and filly only racing, especially for the c1 and upwards.

The system of mares bonuses clearly has not worked and it is time to programme more races and redirect more funds into stakes for female racing. If we continue as we are. our future can be seen in South Oz.

So wake up, do your job, forget about the one off big events and foster the breeding industry before it is too late
