Globe Derby more of his early days.

In the 1994 Hindsight Annual volume 2.
Mr Ken Dyer published an article: Globe Derby Some New Information On His Early Days.
There's always been some conjecture around when Globe Derby was first named and what that name was.

It was generally thought that Globe Derby was unnamed before his first race start on the 29th May 1914.
Mr. Dyer's research showed that Globe Derby was in fact know by that name prior to starting his racing career under the name Cyril C.

Having done some research on Globe Derby myself, here's a Time line from the Newspapers of the day.
That will hopefully add a little more to his early days, and answer some of the mystery surrounded his name.

20 Mar 1913 Globe Derby awarded 2nd place at the Sydney Royal Easter Show for Trotting or Pacing Stallions 2yrs and under 3yrs.

22 Mar 1913 A horse by the name of Globe Derby appears for sale in the Melbourne Age newspaper.

29 Jun 1913 It's reported in the Australian Trotting Record that Mr. James Brennan of Perth will visit New South Wales to purchase Globe Derby.

20 Aug 1913 Mr. James Brennnan while at the Blair Athol Stud purchased the Stallion Desire from D.Hastie, Globe Derby was unsold.

15 Aug 1913 Globe Derby advertised by D.Hastie of the Blair Athol Stud Farm, Temora as a Stud-Book Trotter to stand that season.

26 Sep 1913 Globe Derby awarded first place at the Temora Show for Trotting Stallions registered in the Stud Book.

Globe Derby is registered in the Australian Stud Book for Trotters Volume Three published in 1916 with the registration number 265.
Volume Two of the Stud Book published in 1911 closed with the last registered number 249.
Making Globe Derby the 16th stallion registered by the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales after the close of volume 2 of the Stud Book.
Volume 3 lists stallions numbers 250 to346 in chronological order indicating that Globe Derby would've been registered as a stallion well before 1914.

10 Mar 1914 Globe Derby nominated for the Ladies Bracelet race at Cootamundra on the 17th March over 9 furlongs.

26 Mar 1914 Globe Derby nominated for a 9 furlong race at Cootamundra on the 1st April.

I think the fact that James Brennan was aware of Globe Derby in 1913 and looking to purchase him shows how well known the horse was at the time.
As for the horse named Globe Derby appearing for sale in Melbourne in March 1913 "I've got no idea".

If your a bit of history buff like me, hopefully you'll find the information of interest.

    Cheers

In 1922, Globe Derby won on the grass at the Bendigo Jockey Club racecourse at Epsom. while in the ownership of AG Hunter. Hunters had properties at Elmore
(Burnewany Park) and Seymour (Northwood Park).

So men, how much of the following is true

Foaled at Bathurst in September, 1910, and first known as Cyril C. but later renamed, Globe Derby was destined to become the greatest colonial-bred trotting progenitor in the history of Australian trotting.
Globe Derby was sold as a yearling for 25 guineas. He was later sold for 90 guineas, and later still for £150. Again the horse changed hands before his first race start, the price having increased to £375

The story that Globe Derby was unnamed until his started racing under the name Cyril C is incorrect.
He was well known as Globe Derby before, in fact he was nominated for races in Cootamundra before appearing in Sydney as Cyril C.

He was sold to D.Hastie for 25 guineas on the 30 Nov 1911 at the Bathurst Show Grounds.
The story that Globe Derby was sold for 90 guineas comes from it being said that he was purchased at the Bathurst sale by C.White and then later sold on to Hastie.
This is wrong White never owned Globe Derby, but he did buy his dam Springheel at the Bathurst auction for 26 guineas.

Hastie sold Globe Derby to Nader and Harpley of Temora for 150 pounds.
They in turn sold the horse to J.Corby of Stockingbingal for 375 pounds.

It was Joseph Corby that registered Globe Derby as Cyril C. (after his son) to race at Epping on the 29th May 1914.

Ron Jenkins statement that "Globe Derby was destined to become the greatest colonial-bred trotting progenitor in the history of Australian trotting" is gospel!.

With Noel mentioning Globe Derby's start at Epsom, 24th May 1922.
I had a look at his track record at the time.

I found that Globe Derby also started in a race the next day.
The Distance Handicap Trot over one mile and a quarter.

The second start at Epsom was not mentioned in either of the books Globe Derby's Greatness or Globe Trotters.
Here's the result of the race on the second day of the meeting.

Bendigo Jockey Club, Epsom, 25th May 1922.
    Second day of winter meeting.

    Distance Handicap Trot.
    One mile and a quarter.

    1 The Brumby, R. Dargan's, chh 6yrs by Harold Direct - a Thoroughbred mare, 20yds bhd, T.J. Skehill.
    2 Haricot, A.G. Hunter's, chm aged, 45yds bhd, A.G. Hunter.
    3 Tango Tom, J.Bernasechi's, blkg aged, 45yrds bhd, H.Bambridge.

other starters: Grenadier scr, Sunstar scr, Black Doris 20yrds, A La Mode 75yrds, Queen Pirate 75yrds, Globe Derby 165yrds.

Won by a short head, with four yards between second and third.
    Time: 3.3.

I also had a look at his race record while he was in New Zealand in late 1922 early 1923.
Again a couple of races had been over looked.
Both books say that he started in seven events while in New Zealand.
In fact it was nine, the missing two are his first New Zealand start in the Pacing Exhibition at the Auckland Show on the 2nd December 1922.
And the Cornwall Handicap in Auckland on the 26 th April 1923.

While in New Zealand Globe Derby raced well below his best.
I've put some comments from the newspapers in between his race results, that may give an insight as to why.

    Interesting stuff I reckon.

    Cheers

    Hi there
    Great information Trevor.
Just a correction: It's Epsom ( Bendigo Jockey Club racecourse) not Epping ( In Syndney) where GD raced.

    You got me mate!.
I'd cut and pasted the wrong track name.
You've probably worked out I don't much like information being wrong or incomplete.
So thanks for that, if you ever see a mistake in something I've written please do mention it!.
