On Fairfield though. Did they use to race weekly? Did they go years without a meeting or always had a few meetings a year? Could be making stuff up but I remember seeing Fairfield in the Daily Telegraph when I was a kid but don't recall ever seeing any races there in recent years.
Fairfield race for the final time on Mon Jun 12

...some trainers with quality horses are still targeting the lower tiered races?

Interesting to hear HRV CEO David Martin's comments on the radio earlier this week. Whilst he stated he's still getting his head around race programming, which is fair enough, he did say he was interested in looking into some programming based on a horse's average times. The example given was for it's last ten starts. For a long time HARNESSWEB has listed averages for the last 10, 6, 5, 4, 3.

If someone wants to bring up the breeding mediocrity argument...good on them, but we're struggling for numbers to keep the sport going and we need to support the HERO programme to the hilt.
You can't guarantee going to Bettors gives you a champ, the broodmare gem is truly a gem.
Understandably, especially(?) considering the intended whip ban, there is a line of thought drivers won't drive their horses out to get a slower average time.
    My thoughts:
The "not trying" rule is heavily policed by stewards,
Interesting David mention 10 starts not 6, 5...Without doing the maths you'd need to carry an anchor in 3 or more starts to seriously effect your average. And the liklihood would be those starts being the last 4 or 5 starts, so it would be fairly obvious(?). You need to take into account, even if you have a horse that is performing poorly it will likely be sucked along in a quick time or two so you might need to go in reverse to significantly slow your average down.
And query improved performance might be looked at more closely.

I posted in another thread, a while back, asking about Albury as an example of races programmed on times in the past. Anyone with experience there?

David Moran copping plenty of stick on social media for his drive in the 2yo at Ballarat last night.

Lot of uneducated opinions. John Justice quickens the leader and it looks like the death horse will drop off. Moran on the odds on favourite banks on death horse stopping instead of coming 3 wide ... death horse plugs on nicely and D Moran unfortunately in a victim of circumstances looks like he has held one up.

It was the horse's first start and understandably he did not seem to know much about the caper (did not seem that genuine/keen to go in parts) and the driver could have been excused for thinking he needed the short route - unfortunately the horse made him look bad by finishing off so strongly in the last 50

The discussion re programming has gotten to a point where it is worthy of its own thread. Accordingly. I have moved posts on this issue into its own thread titled "Different Aspects to Programing" for want of a thread name. Hopefully the conversation on this topic will continue there with some continuity and not be lost within the mish mash of posts which make up the Odds and Ends thread. Thanks

[B]This will be interesting once it concludes, especially as the chief steward has been moved on.

"leading trainer Greg Bond has been charged with behaviour detrimental to the industry from a race held during the Perth Inter Dominion series late last year.
After an exhaustive probe, Perth West Australian newspaper reported RWWA had charged Bond in relation a former Kiwi pacer Fifth Edition at Gloucester Park in December. An iquiry was opened straight after the pacer drifted alarmingly in betting, hung badly and wilted to finish last.
The inquiry focused on Bond’s comments in Perth radio on the morning of the race and his betting activity on race night.
RWWA’s general manager of integrity, Denis Borovica, said Bond initially told RWWA’s former chief steward, Carl Coady, he included Fifth Edition in a “first four bet” on the race, but subsequence evidence showed none his bets did include Fifth Edition.
Additionally, Borovica said Bond said on local radio on race morning that Fifth Edition was his “best prospect” that night, neglecting to mention information he had been given by stable foreman Ryan Warwick about the pacer hanging and cross-firing in trackwork the prior Tuesday.
The charges are serious and the inquiry has been adjourned to a date to be set.
Bond and his wife, Skye, are backbones of the WA industry with a huge stable – mostly Kiwi imports – and have trained almost 150 winners so far this season"

Great call by Jim Jaques today at the Kapunda trotters cup won by Al Bundy off 60 metres and won by 17 Metres. Jim made it sound like the 2nd coming of Christ.
