Horse Dentist- cost?

G'day all,

Interested to hear what these buggers generally charge.
Must admit that I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to it over the years...however I was just quoted a price per horse (just some in-foal & dry broodmares, not racehorses) and I thought it was more than just a bit over the top for what he would have to do. Thoughts please.

I find that people who just purchase a few rasps and advertise themselves as horse dentists, you can generally get them to do horses for around $50.00 each. Most of these people do not have any sort of qualifications.

I personally however use equine dental vets. They are licensed veterinarians who almost solely practice in equine dentistry. Some examples....

I got the Melbourne guy to do my horse when he was up in Brisbane a couple of months ago. Most of these dental vets prices start at roughly $150.00 for one horse which includes the travel, sedation etc and go up with any major problems in their mouth. I think I paid $177.00 as my horse had hooks and a few other problems. What I like about dental vets is that they have a flashlight on the spectrum, so everything is lit up clear as day. I was shown all the problems in my horses mouth and nothing was missed, the guy did an excellent job.

Point - if the guy isn't qualified then anything over $50.00 per horse IMHO is too much. However, do you really want someone unqualified and, without a light on the spectrum, essentially working in the dark or your horses? I can't see dental vets charging less than $100.00 per horse if you have several to do, but you do get what you pay for.
