Foaling season is upon us. Post foal pics and stories here!

We sadly lost a couple of unborn foals only a couple weeks ago, which was not a great start but hoping to get some nice lookers out of the rest.

Hey Katie, nice foal ( and mare)but are you absolutely certain the family haven't led you astray here? I was curious if this was a first foal and Harnessweb has Absolute Certainty with a last service date of 5 Jan 2018 to Art Major. But she had an ARRD last year!

KTQ

It wouldn't be the first time they've led me astray Dot. Luckily I'll be home at Christmas to become the stable's social content developer :D :D

Greg - it'll be gone in a month or two and all we'll have left is acres of sand :( but for now, the mares love it. I wish I could ship some to you (and bottle the rest for the summer)

Dot, where did he stand in VIC - Alabar?

Only 41 mares here compared to 134 in NA

Dot

Yes Alabar Victoria. Clearly the North Americans could see something in him that we couldn't.

KTQ
09-28-2018, 05:03 AM
I've seen a couple pics of Racing Hill foals and they have ALL been very nice foals, yours included.
He isn't badly bred - lots of winners back through his line. Perhaps the Roll With Joe sire is what put breeders off.

Surprised to hear Racing Hill only Served 41 Mares,
I also have 3yo RWJ and pretty happy with her,
I think the expectation around RWJ was too high as he was always going to be compared to BD.
I don't think his stats are that bad. (happy to be proven wrong)

KTQ
10-01-2018, 02:23 PM
Those foals are amazing. Nice and chunky. I love black horses and she is black as anything!

KTQ
10-01-2018, 02:26 PM
My word they are well bred. Where did you acquire the Dancing with Daisy one from Anne? I'd love to buy an American bred one

Dot
10-01-2018, 04:36 PM
Nice foals Ann, that first one is certainly a good doer!

Yes Trent I think if you leave comparisons with BD out of it RWJ has done a pretty fair job at stud. He got Racing Hill in his first crop who was a top quality stakes colt along with Betting Line and Control The Moment in their 3yo season but it's fair to say he could do with another stand out in NA now. He has produced some handy ones though in the sires stakes program and whilst he did cover some of the same mares BD did earlier the results haven't been as good but the RWJs have been racing in the era of SBSW whilst the earlier BDs were not. That said an Art Major 3yo and BD 2yo this year have put a bit of a dent in the American breeding philosophy of quickly moving on to younger sires by winning majors against the SBSWs and Capt Ts.

RWJs fertility issues has meant he only has small numbers of foals downunder which is a limiting factor but I'm sure everyone would be happy with an Ignatius in their stable and RWJ has a few other group winners in the ranks.

Maybe Katie it's our obsession with BD rather then RWJ that caused the disappointing support for Racing Hill or, not that it should be the only thing considered, that Racing Hill does not have a super fast mark next to his name. Racing Hills dam was an unraced mare and I think his second dam was only modestly performed on the track as well, maybe that was a factor, if it was then the response to Lazarus in time should be interesting, particularly I think if Lazarus doesn't end up with a very fast mark in the US. ( and that's not intended to detract from his champions status on the track here, just that it opens up comparisons that wouldn't have applied if he'd not gone to the U.S.) Whatever the reason Trent I don't think you've got anything to worry about and have a lovely foal and maybe a breeder or two just might be feeling they missed out.

Thanks Kev, He's quite the magnificent individual and he hasn't really been given a chance yet. So he ticked a lot of boxes for me and I wanted to give him a go, I will post some more foal pics as they come along..I didnt get him till later in the season last year. Good vids Kevin. Like you said he has not really been given a chance
It will be most interesting to see how the eight 2016-17 foals go, there were a couple of useful mares among them and it would be nice if he got a couple of early winners in 2019. I am guessing they are from his Warwick Stud days
How many foals do you expect from last season's 12 services to keep Rose's filly company?

Even though this is an old article (pre Warwick Stud) it is a good read for those who do not know Bonavista Bay

Thanks Kev, Yea he's like the local young lads around here..quite the gentleman...till the females turn up..and then all hell breaks loose!!! Unfortunately there will only be 5 or 6 total(all going well)..a couple of the mares I dont think are able to get in foal and the one mare that was tested positive lost it along the way..with the owner bringing her back for a free return. Yes some early winners can really help..so I live in hope!!..He really is impressive on many levels..so he has got a chance..but the small numbers will make it tough. Not sure how many he will get this season(mares) but it will be a battle for numbers again..anyway here's hoping!!...Sorry I don't mean to hijack the foal photos but I thought I would put in a relaxed pic of Bonavista Bay..

Hi Katie . Dancing With Daisy was acquired from the dispersal of stock from Glenferrie Farms. Rye Hanover was available as well but Daisy offered the opportunity for us to have a race filly. She was very fast but unfortunately broke down so became a broodmare. Lauriston has quite a few mares that we purchased from the USA , mainly from Lexington or Harrisburg Sales.

Dot

Hello Katie, if a trip to Lexington or Harrisburg for a coming home present is out of the question there are two all American bred mares currently advertised on the trading ring on harness.org.au

We've had another 2 born. For now, here is Rocknroll Heaven - Miss Eliza Kate filly. I do love black horses
Kate is a half to Jasper Freeway and Eliza Grace. We bred them both too and they were pretty good horses. Jasper broke down before reaching his top and when I come home, I aim to break him to saddle and make him a showhorse

KTQ
10-10-2018, 02:55 PM
Nah Kev. My UK work visa finished and I didn't want to come home :D Canada had pretty good visa opportunities at the time and I had intended on living in Whistler for a season then moving to outside Toronto and working for Casie Coleman or someone. Of course I met a guy and stayed in Vancouver far far away from any pacing stables.

To my parent's relief, we're moving home in December but I would say after a month or two, they'll be wishing Little Miss Bossy had stayed in the Great White North. As will likely you all as I will likely be bombarding this forum (and Twitter) with opinions.

THIS little darling is our first EVER chestnut standardbred. I cannot believe it - she is my instant favourite. Fly Like An Eagle - La Bliss. West Sired West Bred.

We don't know where the chestnut came from. There are no redheads on Bliss's Mum's side - in fact her granddam and great granddam were black. Blissfull Hall, while himself light coloured giving Bliss a lighter colouring, has no chestnuts. Fly Like An Eagle's Mother's sister has 1 chestnut sister but that's it even going back generations. It would be an odd throwback to get a chestnut from that line - I reeeeeally hope she stays chestnut.

Blissfull Hall threw a few Chestnut's.

Dot
10-17-2018, 11:59 PM
As Greg said Katie Blissfull Hall sired a few chestnuts and as you said Fly Like An Eagles grand dam threw a chestnut he obviously carries the chestnut gene as well. Don't recall Falcon Seelster or Mach Three producing any chestnuts so it's likely they were homozygous for bay and masked the chestnut gene being passed down through FLARs dam line. It is a recessive gene and a foal needs to get a copy from both parents to be expressed but it can go for quite a number of generations without being expressed. Somewhere back in both parents pedigree will be a chestnut horse and I don't think you have any worries about your new favourite girl remaining a redhead!

The Howletts and the Spurrs are flying the flag for WA

I checked the USTA to see if Bettors x Art Major was one of their golden crosses but what I did spot was how terrible the record is for Bettors x Somebeachsomewhere (only a sample of 10 mind you)

He's a ripper Kate!!..do you have more to come?..I have 3 all going well..that's to Rusty and a few more after that to P(Shooter)forty Seven. Kev I really love the creational side of breeding..following them through..hoping to get a good one..but even if they're like me..a bit slow...to give them the opportunity...

Dot
10-25-2018, 01:58 PM
Yes the West Australians doing a fine job, and the Westbred and double Westbred program is a good incentive.

I'd hazard a guess Kev, that the oldest of the BD/SBSW crosses are 2yos and perhaps SBSW is the only dam sire on that table where they are only 2yos still. It does look dissapointing but could change markedly in a year or two. There are a couple of other things on that table that standout more significantly to me. But of course there is the old adage, lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Messenger
10-25-2018, 03:27 PM
Like you said Dot, it is early days but American Ideal and Rock N Roll Heaven are looking promising with SBS mares

Dot
10-25-2018, 05:37 PM
Looking more closely Kev they could be older then 2yos so early indications are definately dissapointing but the sample size of the data is still small enough to not be relevant. A statistician would say the sample size for pretty much every cross is too small to be relevant. I'll go out on a limb and say I'd prefer to see SBSW mares with stallions with Direct Scooter in there lines as American Ideal and Rock n Roll heaven do, but with the strength of the mares and maternal families SBSW was bred over his daughters in time will become good producers with a range of sires.

Well it's been a tough 4 odd days here...a day and a half after our first colt was born I found his Mother dead in the paddock..couldn't believe it..she was doing so well and she's not a person horse so I didn't want to pester her. The colt was on all fours trying to suckle when I got to him...I thought I would lose him..managed to get some formula into him while we jumped on facebook looking for a foster mum..a lady in nearby Katanning responded and said that she had a friendly quarterhorse mare with a 5 week old foal on her..I had already tried a couple of my mares to no avail..and I was sceptical that this would work too...so we had to try and to my utter surprise she accepted him immediately!!..we did put a towel over him with the smell of her foal and some urine..What an amazing mare!!..so lucky..but yes still a way to go but it's looking positive...a photo of the boy with his new Mum!!!

Hi Kate, yes he's doing okay after a few ups and downs..at one stage he went backwards for a bit but responded again in the morning. The lady who has the mare and is looking after him said that he even went for a canter and a buck yesterday which is really good news..but he has been struggling at times so hopefully he keeps ploughing ahead. Thanks for the heads up about the Foster mare!!.. Love the foals and I think Alta Christiano is still a good chance of getting some good horses out there. I bred a filly out of Our Tabletop Dancer which I sold at the sales, shes a 3yo now and was never tried at 2 but going nicely I'm hearing.
