The 4th day of the new season and R1 at Maryborough on Monday is a 2yo

Damien Burns was rightfully suspended for taking the legs of poor Ozzie Joy when taking the fav to the lead. Not the experience you want for your 2yo in its first ever race.
The fav first of all seemed to think it was a 690m race, wanting to pull up at the winning post the first time, and then only seemed to race truly whenever anything drew alongside him. I got the impression that he was coming back at his stablemate who headed him along the sprint lane

They're racing in NZ too

I am guessing that Jonny Turner is not old enough to know that it is Mitsi not Misti

Edit: Although it should really be Mitzi, surprising they didn't use a Z as her dam is Czanyi

Edit 2: Brilliant naming actually as I now note that Mitzi's real name is Francesca Marlene de Czanyi von Gerber

A good night for Pet Rock at Kilmore as he quinellaed the 2yo with the 2nd placer coming wide from last just as impressive as the winner who led but was very green. Nevertheless the time was a very respectable 1.56.9
Apparently the 'mexicans' from across the border pulled off a bit of a plunge

http://www.harness.org.au/racing/fields/race-fields/?mc=KI280121#KIC28012105

As yet Pet Rock has not set the world on fire here or overseas and after his number of mares fell away he is now only available via Imp Semen

We have become accustomed to seeing a trainer almost monopolize a race field - think Stewart, Yole, ...
Well you can add Butt&Smith to that list
But more unusual is the fact that the Strides as owners have 6/7 runners in the 2yo at Ballarat on Thursday

Allwood Stud/Peter Anderson over here in WA has had a couple of entire fields down in Albany. With West Bred/Double West Bred/Owner/Breeder etc bonuses, he gets about $20k per race (for $7500 prize money)

Mister Rea's sire Pet Rock is only available by Imp Semen now, after being well patronized in his few season here. He has not set the world on fire with only two $100k+ performers with his best being Rockin Marty ($160k) who beat Lochinvar Art in a 3yo Breeders Final
His first crop are now 5yo's. He hasn't gone much better in the United States either with Sectionline Bigry being his standout having earnt $572,000 and gone 1.48.1

Borntoboom is in R3 at Ballarat on Thursday
It is by the so-so Betterthancheddar and the first to the races for 20yo mum who hails from a very ordinary family
But none of us will be surprised if he wins because he is in the Stewart stable and generally that means he must be a winner
The well performed Solesseo Matuca is in the race

Looking at tonight's 2yo I was looking at Lightning Dan's last start 7th which led me to watch the Bathurst Gold Crown again
Pet Rock quinellaed the race. I had been thinking the Mister Rea may have just been a freak (although he has a very credible dam who finished 3rd in a Gold Bracelet) but it was a good run by Masquerading who has run 2nd to him in 3 of her 4 starts
Pet Rock's Australian foals fell from over 100 for 3 seasons to just 43 last year BUT maybe he is just about to shine

(this thread is becoming the Mister Rea fan club - I just noticed posts 7,11&12 are about him too)

Akuta is the stand-out colt in NZ this season. You too, Kev, could have owned him had you stumped up the necessary $170k at the yearling sales. And, yes, Hayden Cullen had six runners because former All Stars owners have stuck fat with him and he has repaid their faith. One of those owners is a part-owner of Akuta - Mark Purdon.

Wow did he really go for that. He must be an amazing looking athlete because a quick look does not reveal anything on the dam side. As you will see below the dam was unraced and she had not had much time to produce anything special before Akuta went through the ring. So you look at the 2nd dam but we have the same story there

He is indeed an amazing looking athlete. A relative of mine was very keen on him having looked at him as a foal and a few weeks before the sale. Got a bit hot in the $ department.

Avana (previous foal) would have no trouble handing out regular spankings to her age and sex at Melton.

Smart Man was a Naughty Boy
but the Encipher - Doug's Diva race was a cracking contest

The final was another good contest between these two. Doug's Diva was in the death this time and put it to Encipher the whole way, maybe she doesn't like cover because you would have thought that after softening the fav up, Danielle Hill may have taken some cover on her back, what with the two of them being well clear of the rest of the field from the get-go and knowing that Encipher did not lack toughness after sitting outside her last time. Maybe they thought they could worry her out of it due to her inexperience - it would however have been interesting to see if Doug's Diva had more zip
With the heat last week being her first ever start it is amazing to think that Encipher's time was only 1 sec off the Open Tk Rec

I was just trying to work out why Akuta would have sold for so much but on reflection regardless of how highly one rates the sister because she is only a year older she would not have been racing when he was sold so it is irrelevant to what I was seeking

Grey Rocket won the Marylands SS for fillies in 1.59.4
while Anthonys All In won the colts in 2.01.2

Grey Rocket is by Cams Rocket who is now 24yo. He has only ever had one big earner - Googoo Gaagaa ($665k)
Anthonys All In is by Rustys All In (2006) who is yet to have a big earner (well a big earning classic winner at least, as my source is Classic Families)

The races were held at Ocean Downs, Berlin, Maryland
This is a half mile track so I cannot work out how they have mile races especially when their home straight is only 440ft (134m) so it must be pretty circular (pic below)

We had a very special 2yo winner at Cobram today
Hes Charlies Angel (Sweet Lou)
Just watch this

https://www.harness.org.au/racing/fields/race-fields/?mc=CO190821#COC19082107

Sat in death, 1.55.4 after a pedestrian 33 Q2 came home in 27.7 and 26.6 to win by 22m at his first start.
Charlene Gusman has a horse to threaten the Stewart stable dominance

You need to go back a bit in the pedigree (although mum was a nice 2yo), 3rd dam is a half sister to the granddam of Alta Orlando

ps Race should have been a False Start as No.4 was where No.11 should have been

At Flamboro Downs in Canada on Sunday

Erinwood Yves won a $99k leg of the Ontario Sires Stakes
He is a colt by State Treasurer (2009, Real Desire)
State Treasurer raced until he was 7, winning $1.9m and setting a world record 1.47 for aged pacers in 2015, up until now from just a couple of crops, he has not sired much of note
Erinwood Yves's 1.53.1 was 4 seconds faster than the other leg won by Aviator (Sportswriter)

There is incredible depth in both the boys and the girls Tatlows on Saturday night
Emma Stewart will have half the field in the fillies and one third of the field in the colts

Of her 6 chances in the fillies, the market considers her 4 off the front as her best and it is interesting that 3 of them are first up
Encipher and Petillante are both resuming and have been heavily supported already and are just about equal favourites at around $2.50
Encipher only had the 2 starts at Globe Derby to win the Allwood last campaign
Her time in the final was only 1 sec off the Open Tk Rec. Admittedly the record has stood since 2016 so is due to be broken (but not by a 2yo filly at her second ever start)
Irish Black Label (barrier 5?) who won the Gold Bullion is also resuming but has drifted from $5.50 to $9.50 in early markets

Beach Villa (2) and Catch A Wave (3) should provide a fantastic battle in the colts

A bit clumsy looking but I have added the average earnings Without Highest Earner in red

You can see that the top 2 standout then the gaps start opening up
It is different from the way we usually do it
They have average per foal
We generally use average per starter
I think I prefer per foal actually

I know it is only their 2yo's but it seems to me that there is not as much money in USA 2yo racing as I imagined

ps I don't think it is necessarily fair to leave out highest earner but even this single table shows how one horse can sometimes distort the average (probably why median is sometimes preferred to mean/average)

Interesting that Bettors Delight is not in the Top 20 by 2yo average earnings (see post 91 table)
He has the 9th highest earner in Silver Label but obviously his 116 foals average under $9,000
(He sneaks into 18th for 3yo's by average earnings)

Nor did Somebeachsomewhere make it with his last small crop of 20
He however is 2nd only to Always B Miki on the 3yo averages table

Good work Kev. These analyses are quite revealing. Downbytheeaside' especially.
It's quite amazing how stats reveal a different picture to what ads for stallions try and tell you.

There's no question though that the Direct Scooter male line from Mach Three has radically changed breeding. Also how sons of non-commercial stallions...Always A Virgin ( Always B Miki) and Yankee Cruiser ( Sweet Lou) can extend their sire-line.

There are 5 making their debut in R4 at Geelong tonight with their dams having 63 wins between them

The biggest watch will probably be on filly Non Parreil as she is the first foal of Arms Of An Angel, who was prematurely retired from racing as an early 5yo. Her first season of racing as a 3yo in NZ only produced 2 wins from 19 starts but then she came to Australia as a 4yo for 14 starts and a near perfect record of 10 wins and 3 thirds until her last start. She ran 3rd in both the Chariots Of Fire and the Miracle Mile. Here is a short article with all the details

Below is the link to the form guide for the race
I know most know this but for those that don't, just click on a dam for a runner eg Arms Of An Angel for No.1 Non Parreil

Mister Rea's unbeaten record of 6/6 came to and end at Wagga on Tuesday
I still think he is very very good but maybe he is not as super special as I thought

Probably being tough as he was first up for 10wks and it was an open age race
But his conqueror is only a 3yo filly who sat on his back and finished over him
(interesting to contrast the two drivers' whip actions too)

His preferred style has been to lead so if she can sit on his back and outsprint him, his top 2yo companions will be looking to do that next year
His previous win at Wagga he had come home in 26.8 so if he takes it a little easier earlier, not many are going to come over the top of that

Now the question is - can she qualify all 6 for the Semis
The market has her runners as the top 6 fancies
The runners for other stables are $31, $151, $151
The $31 pop Mykorona is drawn perfectly in 1 so it will be interesting to see how they keep her out of the top 6
