Oh the vagaries of the punt
R5 at Maryborough today

Somebody(s) must have plonked a bit on the winner No Win No Worries at the jump because he ended up tote favourite and only paid $2.60 so they made $1.60 for every dollar bet. He opened the day at that fixed but quickly blew to $4 fixed where he stayed so they could have made nearly twice as much money - $3 for every dollar bet, that is a big diff

The fixed favourite Priddy Sublime did the opposite he opened the day at $5 fixed but quickly came into $2.20 where he stayed. It was only a 7 horse race so only 2 place divvies but although he was beaten into 2nd you could have got $3 the place on the tote
(Of course there was only $2.5k in the place pool)

It won so I am no doubt the fool but how could Kilmore R1 winner Rainbowsnpearls start $1.30

She had had 7 starts before this 4yo+ Maiden pace
She was ODM and coming out of 11
She was $1.70 beaten favourite from 3 at her last start
Rob Auber only picked it for 3rd and whoever did the odds assessed her at $6

The last at Melton tonight
When the market opened
Techys Angel was $1.75 - she started $8 (2.9m second)
Maajida was $5.50 - started $1.85 and won

aussiebreno

Opening prices were ridiculous. 7 starts ago Maajida was fairly $2.20 when drawn #13 at Wagga and Techys drew to lead. Techy did win on that occassion but with Maajida drawn the inside she was quite clearly deserved fave.

2 good horses from the same stable owned by the same connections, who are not punters, in the same race
Don't take $1.10 about one of them, as it makes no difference to them who wins

I know that Spot On's NZ record looked pretty good for his Aussie debut at Maryborough today but he had not won for a year, had drawn the inside of the back row and had a couple of in form horses to beat
Nevertheless he started $1.06 fav and he got the money after finding the lead quite easily but lost it entering the straight - backers would have been a wreck

With the pros' money going on super late nowadays the fact that Chinese Whisper went roughly in the score up several seconds before release, this was undoubtedly why the fav who had touched $1.10 and was $1.22 when they began scoring up, drifted all the way out to $1.65

There could not have been more media about this horse than there was this week but alas the score up was the last we saw of the fav as he was tailed out. This type of debacle is why some people have never followed the trotters seriously

It was interesting to note that in the last leg of 6 novice trotters, Chris Lang and dare I say the stable were only interested in looking after their horse and thinking long term, which did not mean sitting in the death for her first start.
You will see that Chris was looking for the spot 3 back the pegs (not where you expect an odds on fav in a 6 horse race) but the other horse kicked up

It pays to listen to Dan, in the last minute or two leading up to R6 at Geelong he was saying that Petillante drifted from $1.55 to $2.10 fixed
It is hard to know how you would have gotten on at those odds if you fancied the B&W figures as the following snip was taken 5min after advertised start time (post race)

I will show the post race crap that the TAB put up in the next post as I can only attach one per post

Dan is saying the drift was extraordinary - I will tell you why it happened Dan - nobody wanted to back her at $1.55 and NOBODY KNEW ABOUT THE DRIFT as the TAB never updated the fixed, she would have drifted a bit but not that much eg if punters knew she was out to $2 she would have probably been supported back into say $1.80

For Saturday' Vic Cup meeting of 11 high quality races
the Stewart stable has 5 odds on favourites and 2 favourites around 6/4

If they can win 7 races on such a premier card, then the other trainers should consider easier pickings against Ben Yole down in Tassie

Our code is so different. Rob Auber just referring to the $1.20 fav being beaten in R2 as a mini boilover In the gallops it would be considered shocking.
Sometimes I wonder whether it is just a couple of dozen big pro punters v the betting agencies that is the bulk of our turnover (and the very slim thread we hang by)

I really believe there is just a handful of pro punters that account for half our turnover

And that is a worry in my book

In R1 the first four pool was about $9,000 and most of it jackpotted
So what happens in the next
R2 the first four pool was about $48,000
The next R3 the first four pool was back to about $7,000

That is not the little punters piling in

I would be amazed if trots races hold anywhere near the pacing races
And yet our industry that relies on the punting dollar is tying half its future to trotters
I am not really a punter and have not had a bet yet tonight but it has confirmed my belief in not betting on trotters

A punter could easily have backed Paris Jamilla, Hide And Seek and Courmayeur in the first 3 races tonight and NOT got a run for their money
The powers that be must see this as a problem/bad look
And spare a thought for Stingofawasp connections who did not get a run through no fault of their own.
If Courmayeur gallops in the score up - we have a false start
Gallops at release point - tough luck for the horse trailing
Maybe we need to consider rethinking when a horse can be declared a non-runner

Not only less money on the races itself, but then hinders the pacing ability to get turnover because the mugs cant differentiate between trotting and pacing. Get rid of them. Broken Hill today whet my appetite more.

I had a tipple on a longshot at Stawell today and even though I left it until the last minute and used the TAB Multiplier - getting $44 instead of $33

The reason I waited until the last minute is that the same horses odds nearly tripled after I backed it last time and they did double today too

But straight after I bet and with < a minute to go, the odds start climbing
So I think why not have another $10 on it BUT as quick as I tick the box the odds keep climbing 51, 61, 71, 81
and of course starting again each time, it closes on me - saved $10 as no longshots won at Stawell today
But it sure is hard for a little tippler to get best odds

While Adam Hamilton has said the pre-Hunter night is not working for the GSStar, PP has suggested having limited betting time when the Final field is only confirmed about 2hrs beforehand is the problem
Heat 1 had $12k in the Win pool, Heat 2 had $15k while the Final had $14k. This is Vic tote only of course and although the Final matched the heats, none of them would seem to justify the prizemoney. The Quaddie that included no GSS races held an impressive $129k

The Hunter Cup held $43k for the Win, $26k Tri and $26k F4 with a massive $321k the Quaddie
Interesting that the 2nd biggest win pool was R3 with $24k and Captain Ravishing $1.04

Corporates of course hold more (but we do not earn as much from them)

Rob Auber is a pretty good form assessor and if the market was logical, his assessments for Stawell today would suggest that we should only have one favourite under $3 ($2.40 R7). We of course know that the market is rarely logical and we will probably have a couple in the red

Rob Auber went a little exotic with his suggested bets for the second half of the card at Yarra Valley today

R5 $3 to get the $3.50 Quinella
R6 $6 to get the $17.80 Quinella
R7 $60 but missed the $122 Tri
R8 $10 to get the $6.70 Quinella
R10 $3 to get the $3.50 Quinella

Maybe they should add: the world's biggest idiots - I mean how can so many fall for the hype that it is more fun watching if you lose on it too

I have an ever so occasional bet, no doubt because I think the odds are in my favour - let's face it, having a superannuation fund is a bet

Correct me if I am wrong (for I am only a tiddler)
After the longshots got up in R6 the tote says the First Four paid $24,555 (with a $10,667 Jackpot)
But the pools says there was only $13,906 on the First Four

So nobody actually won $4k

I reckon R1 at Bendigo was a classic example of the pros money not going on until the last 10 secs
The fav 2yo first starter Sir Jimmy had until then been backed in to around $1.35 but as the mobile got moving he was slow to score up, it was obvious that he was not going to get up into his position. He blew out to $1.80 while the 2nd and 3rd favourites shortened

Of course one cannot be 100% certain that he wasn't going to ease anyway
But I wouldn't mind betting :) it was more the pros seeing the opportunity to jump on the other two

Take R7 at Maryborough today

Another way to lose your money.
The favourite All Star Magician in R8 at Newcastle yesterday, was most unlucky for if you look closely when he gallops and loses the lead down the back - he was jumping a marker peg that was lying on the track
He did incredibly well to recover so quickly and was only beaten a HFNK

Having previously been required to stand to lose $1000 on Victorian metropolitan meetings win bets and $500 on Victorian country meetings win bets, the policy has been beefed up to include further requirements for wagering service providers.

They are:

$2000 win and $800 place minimum bet limits for all Group 1 races
$1000 win and $400 place minimum bet limits for metropolitan races
$500 wins and $200 place minimum bet limits for non-metropolitan races

So watching Saturday replays
I also cannot understand how Ubetcha Tigerpie wins at $10 in 1.52.4
when he couldn't win at $1.55 in 1.55.1
I know they are not machines but other than that maybe he is simply tough and he cannot go faster than 26.8 for Q4 so faster is better for him
Lucky Final Collect did not get to the death or he may have caused trouble again (this time he was $34) or maybe not letting him get there was part of the plan (although that seemed to be more Terry's doing)
