As Trevor told us in the NZ thread, Vincent's Seve won the first 2yo race in NZ but I am thinking the MR of 2.02.5 is not telling us much

https://infohorse.hrnz.co.nz/datahrs/results/012102rs.htm#results-58645-race-7-dl

In Australia our first 2yo race was at Pinjarra last Monday with American Ideal's Cab Sav winning but once again the MR was only 2.03.1

Watched both races now and you would have to say that neither winner is necessarily any better than some of those they beat

We won't give Vincent too much credit yet as the dam has been a good producer with Bettors - one a WA Gp3 winner, one a 3rd in a QLD Oaks, and a Courage Under Fire going 1.49.2 in the US

In Auckland they really only got sprinting the last furlong. The winner raced greenly but knuckled down when the sprint was on. From memory the runner-up was a $80k sales purchase a day the winner is a home bred. It's early in the season to worry about times, more to worry about manners. That said, a Vincent filly qualified at Ashburton last week in 1:58.5 but didn't appear to be quite ready yet. Another couple of trials, perhaps.

Huntsville's Rocket City looked a bit of a rocket in winning the last colt's heat while another first season sire in Downbytheseaside provided the impressive winner in filly Between Two Thorns
Captaintreacherous is still putting his name up in lights providing the quinella in one of the colts heats

Very happy. She's going well with a tonne of improvement in her
Tough run being in the breeze/running line the whole way and she made ground.

Valedictorian looks the goods. He's owned by The Trots WA syndicate. They had a draw for a 10% ownership in him. Some lucky couple won it and here he is in a $100k group 1 a month into their ownership

After scratchings 58 colts ended up going around in the heats of the Bathurst Crown last night
The boom Melbourne/Stewart colt Petracca (Captaintreacherous) was impressive winning the last but there is some very serious opposition to be faced in the final
Other winners that I liked were Happy Reg (Always B Miki) although he is still racing roughly, Better Be The Best (Shoobees Place) is very sharp, Naturally Gifted (Sweet Lou) despite an early burn, Tardelli (Huntsville) with the fastest time and Our Sunset Delight (Art Major) did it pretty easy

Nathan Jack is driving the favourite in both the Crown and the Tiara
Treasure Stride $1.55 - of the heat winners she got the 2nd best barrier (likely to be 6) but is way too short for a 2nd starter IMO
Petracca $2.00 - likely to be SR1 with the other winners drawn 2,3,4,5 so it will be tough

Bathurst Finals night
I think they have their prizemoney split wrong.
The winners of the consolations pocket $25k - horses not good enough to make the final.
2nd in the actual Crown and Tiara Finals gets about $20k. Not fair in my book
The consolations should be for $30k ($15k to the winner) and the actual Crown and Tiara should be for $130k with the result that 3rd in the real finals gets more than the winner of the consolations

Reviewing Bathurst, Jewel Melody toughed it out but you don't get a much slower final quarter than 31.2 in a Gp1 over 1730m

Rock Artist is Yankee Rockstar's third only starter (two 2yo's last season) and is his 2nd winner. He was very impressive after being stuck 3 wide, he finished strongly in 26.8

I don't think Rock Artist went through the sales so Stewart/Tonkin obviously liked him to have him in their name and have somehow been able to snaffle him from Lauriston

It was great to see Rock Artist win. The current 2 year olds are the Rockstars biggest crop so hoping for more youngsters at the track. Emma and Clayton bought RA off us privately ,they love the Rockstar and wanted to support him.
I have just read the story on Harnesslink re the Stallion Levy. It was the talk of the sales. Instead of assisting the breeding industry the proposed levy will be used to fund a Slots Race and it is rumoured that ALL stallions will attract a levy at different levels.

Bull never raced, he is by Roy Mattgregor who only ever produced a couple of $100k performers.
It is not like Bull's dam produced anything of note - zip, but the 2nd dam is also the 2nd dam of Bit Of A Legend who earnt $2,677,957 mostly in the US
The surprising thing about the 4 mares that Bull served a couple of years ago, three of them had 30 wins between them, so they were not duds

Charlton R1 tomorrow is an interesting one for first starters

My Line Of Fire is the first foal of a half sis to an Interdom runner up

Roadmaster is also from a cracking 2nd dam, I suppose he is of interest to see whether he can make up for his dam (a Bettors) being the only failure

Joyful is really special on the breeding front as she is only the 2nd foal (after several misses) of Joyfuljoy who was a Gp1 Jewels winner

Roadmaster was the pick of the three although I think Joyful was only there to see what racing is all about, My Line Of Fire was ordinary (hard to imagine him a trial winner)

Captain Foxtrot deserves to win soon, now has 5 seconds from 8 starts

Avoca Blues as odds on fav was a strange one, you can see why Greg Sugars quiet driving style would sometimes rile punters as you would have thought the way the race panned out he had to run a place at least

We have not got a lot to go on but after one start each, I don't think there is a lot between Major Celebrity and Little Louie

Judd said the original plan was to get her to the trials about now and then spell her without racing.

He said they had decided to go to the Sapling Stakes on the recommendation of Emma Stewart, who was delighted with her progress.

“Emma said she’s going well, so we’ll give her the one start and then tip her out and bring her back for the Breeders Crown,” he said.

It will be interesting to see if the Stewart stable make a horse out of their 2yo winner at Maryborough today
He is by Hes Watching who has done very little as a sire, his best being two 5yo mares who have won $100k

Once again, I say there is little to recommend HW and for this one you have to go further back in the dam line - the 3rd dam to get excited, it really should be against the odds that this one should be anything special BUT it is the Stewart stable

Maybe HW is about to take off as I notice the Gath stable have one debuting as favourite at Melton on Wednesday night

Looking at the GP fields for tonight, I noticed that one of the first starters in the 2yo is by Foreclosure

A NZ bred stallion who raced in the US and is based in Ireland (after serving a small number in the US - with some success)

We need to get used to 2yo or older style races. They are now very common in NZ due to the paucity of eligible two-year olds. And the situation will only get worse.

R3 Rock Artist $1.45 ($1.60)
R4 Perfect Class $2.00 ($2.50)
R5 Spring Blue $2.15 ($2.20) - stablemate has been well supported and could start fav

You can say Mark Pitt may have been a little too confident on Rock Artist or that Dougs Platter simply had too good a trail
Perfect In Pink is a very consistent filly but she is not a $1.10 horse maybe not even an odds on horse having won 3/6 when starting odds on
