Note: At some point I will move this thread to the Breeding section
I have been avoiding thinking about how bad the Melbourne yearling sales might be this year
APG may have found a solution - although it is an indictment on the state and the state of the industry
There are only 67 lots for sale (56 pacers)
In 2024 there were 111 lots
That is 40% less horses and may create demand through scarcity for those not worrying about the state of the industry in Vic
https://www.thetrots.com.au/news/the-forum/wharton/wharton-apg-melbourne-sale-set-to-kick-off-the-new-year-in-style/
A quick little bit of research revealed 134 pacers went through the ring in 2022
Yep - that is way less than half this year
The only professionals still in the industry probably don't know what else to do and maybe consider themselves in semi retirement. Other than that they must be rich and this is really only a hobby.
I cannot see how any young person (needing to make money) should be encouraged to remain in the industry in this state

It has been a bad start - most being passed in - some can't get a $6k bid
Have had one fetch $33k
Who pays all these Sales staff - not enough being collected to pay them

It is as if the decline in Vic prizemoney has translated to the sale in that the first bid is generally a mere $6k

$360k for Lot 70 from Adore Me has a large Colt factor attached as it is her first. Mega (record) bucks as none of her fillies have made $360k yet
$360k for Lot 73 from Bettor Twist a $569k winner who is a half sis to King Of Swing and this is her 1st foal
$240k for Lot 106 from champion trotter Dance Craze (who is also a full sis to The Locomotive)
The buyers are Stonewall Stud (70&73) and Barry Purdon (106) so we are talking old money

At this time of year historical yearling prices always make interesting reading :D

It doesn't want to paste as a link so just copy and paste it
It is not totally up to date as the 2nd highest lot ever - San Sebastian has now had 2 starts

Results of last Sunday's APG Perth sale have (finally) been posted
https://www.apgold.com.au/apg-sales/apg-sales-results/2025-perth-sale-results/
With 164 lots this was easily the biggest of the APG sales this year
62% clearance rate is a bit disappointing but there were five $100k+ sales
Edit: My bad - I thought this sale was on Feb 23

Nutrien's Sydney Sale yesterday, there were about 200 lots
I could have missed one but I think there were EIGHT $100k+ lots
Half of them were by Captaintreacherous, 2 by Bettors, 1 by Art Major and 1 by Downbytheseaside
$275k for the filly lot 52 was the Top (and another filly went for $190k)
$200k was the top colt - bought by John Hawkes of gallops fame (but a fan)
Michael Brennan's N40 bought the toppie and another $160k lot

Yes I agree.
PP states they need 1 sale. Agree with him too.
