An inquiry was opened into the circumstances surrounding DONNAS X FACTOR NZ shifting out near the 200 metres which in turn afforded TRIUMPHANT REIGN NZ an inside run. Significant evidence was taken from driver J Bellamy (DONNAS X FACTOR NZ). When questioned, trainer of both runners, A Khouiss indicated that he only placed low level investments on both of his runners and offered no firm instructions to either driver. Driver B Carey (TRIUMPHANT REIGN) confirmed that he was told by A Khouiss to drive the gelding forward with cover as per its normal racing pattern. Owners of DONNAS X FACTOR NZ, G Shallala and F Pham explained that they both supported their runner as trainer A Khouiss had indicated that he was of the view that the mare would be competitive. The club’s Veterinarian Dr A Daniels reported to the inquiry that a post race veterinary examination revealed DONNAS X FACTOR NZ to be sore in the near fore fetlock and mildly lame. The inquiry was adjourned to a date and time to be fixed in order to allow Stewards the opportunity to review previous starts of DONNAS X FACTOR NZ, examine wagering information and to consider the evidence. Acting under Rule 183 DONNAS X FACTOR NZ was stood down pending the conclusion of the inquiry.
