Has anyone seen any 2 yo's that look like being better than average ? One i noticed on Leeton Breeder's night was Courageous Eagle as green as grass but ran home strong, also the first two should go on if looked after.

G'day Greg,
Terry Lewis has a colt down in VIC by the name of The Fat Man. It looks to be extremely smart. Luke has one here in Sydney, its name is Bling It On. It also looks to be all the goods and then some. Beat up on the older horses in a trial at Menangle the other day & did it in style. Harvey might like to elaborate there.

Hi Jaimie/Greg

Bling it On is Baby Bling's younger brother by American Ideal and raced by the exact same group of owners. He is certainly showing very good promise as evidenced by his trial last Tuesday at Menangle, but until they do it in a race, Im not going to get too excited!

I watched the trial live - I'd be excited if I owned it.

The Fat Man is running Wednesday night at Ballarat against Yankee Rockstar who also won a trial fairly impressively recently (by 70m!).

A very impressive 2yo trialled at Menangle today called All Eyes on US. Now I might be a bit biased but he did it very easily...

Yankee Rockstar won at Ballarat last night at his first start, against 2horses that had wraps on them; The Fat Man and Adam Cartwright . Yankee Rockstar is bred to be a good horse ; Rocknroll Hanover -Aston Villa ( Artsplace ) he is her first foal and she was a good mare whose career was cut short by injury. Our boy will be improved by that run .

Anne, I was lucky enough to have a couple of bob on him at the shorts. He was driven perfectly, given time to settle before challenging for the lead and was in total control down the straight. Lots of scope for improvement and plenty more wins in store.

Well done. Hes goes very nice, good to see when your own bred babies win, must be a great feeling.

Thank you. It's great to have Gavin driving the babies, years of experience and he looks after them.

Excellant debut Anne, a lot of water to go under the bridge but little doubt he could easily add to Rocknroll Hanovers tally of classic winners from Artsplace mares, perhaps one day even the tally of millionaires. With 5 of the 6 millionaires so far being out of Artsplace mares you have a headstart on many of the rest!

Congrats on the win last night Anne. I see the sister to YR has been withdrawn from the sales.

What has happened? I hope she hasnt hurt herself or suffered an injury as on last nights performance she could have been worth quite abit at the sales

Bonnie
01-17-2013, 07:12 PM
She was withdrawn a couple of weeks ago. She was kicked on the shoulder and although only superficial it would not be 100% by sale day. She is too nice a filly to have her price compromised by a small temporary blemish. Also she is the only filly from the mare as Aston Villa has had another colt ; full brother to YR.

At Bankstown last night, previously mentioned Bling It On ran the 1740m in a mile rate of 2:00.2 - more interesting though is the level of acceleration in the final quarter - 28.0s; that's in the 94th percentile of the last six months of racing there at the distance.

I'd recommend keeping one eye on that one.

He looked like a seasoned 'three year' old up against babies Harvey. Are they sure he's just 2? Raced like he has been doing it for years, temperment, manners etc. Not one of yours is he?

I sold his full sister on the weekend. If only the sale was this week...

Great run by the winner but a top run from the second horse considering he did all the work and went a bit rough just before the last bend.Looks like there are going to be some serious 2yr olds this year,Luke trialled another nice "stride" one yesterday.gone are the days when you would get excited about having a 2.00 2yr old. They are really flying now!!!

Harvey, Ross call me old fashioned but I was taught many many years ago that it was rude to fish for compliments or blow your own trumpet. Yes they are going faster but why wouldn't they be? Better stallions available, bigger track, hi tech carts etc. They may be showing speed but none of the 2yo's, and they couldn't really be expected to yet, are showing "class", and it is class not speed that takes a horse to the top.

Harvey, I imagine you would receive copies of trackbred? Ross maybe not. Some months ago there was an article on one of the legends of southern hemisphere breeding in Bob McCardle, where Bob said quite clearly that it was time we stopped judging our horses based on speed and started measuring them on "class" like the TB's do. I've no doubt Bob is right.

teecee
02-06-2013, 09:02 PM
Problem is while speed is a measurable commodity from which class can be objectively assessed, class alone is based on a subjective opinion that is not objectively assessed but is the sole opinion of any and all who wish to express same.

to this day Bob still advertises and promotes his stock based on performance of close family members, siblings and progeny of same. That performance factor is speed rather than class.

Hey dot,"not fishing for compliments"or "blowing my own trumpet" just very pleased to be lucky enough to have bred and race a nice baby instead of hearing all the time on here from certain people how the industry is in such a mess and everything is so terrible and the world is going to end,so please just relax and take it easy with the personal attacks.Thank you

you can talk about speed & class as much as you want but without combining them with mental & physical tuffness the speed & class attributes more times than not wont
be sustained long enough to survive the 2 & 3 YO vortex of waste that seems to be their ultimate demise..management & creed control is another story..

Gee Ross, personal attack? And they say they breed em tough in QLD. If by certain people you mean me then feel free to say so, wouldn't want to inadvertantly upset someone else would you Ross. They say ignorance is bliss, but thats something I wouldn't know.

Teecee the TB's measure class by way of success in group and classic races, and have done for centuries. That is certainly not subjective and given the success and strength of their industry I would judge as very effective. Its not totally failsafe though as there certainly is a difference in the strength of the fields in different jurisdictions with varying levels of prizemoney, but as jurisdiction of group win and prizemoney earned are also made available it works pretty well. Using time as a measure of "class" obviously wouldn't work in TB's because of the multitute of variations in track configuration and conditions.

Harness tracks are more uniform but you aren't going to tell me that times recorded on half, five furlong and mile tracks should be considerred equally are you? Surely you aren't suggesting that Harvey's colt is say superior to Anne's colt on the basis of having a faster mark? The US distinguishes track size in their records, we don't and to save me looking it up TC I'm sure you can enlighten us as to which practice NZ follows?

Bob is a successfull business man, I'm sure he does promote his stock based on what the market currently expects, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't think or believe that there should be a change.

There is of course a subjective measure of class as well and Mel if you want to use the dictionary definition as your measure and believe that you have seen it in AEOU already then your welcome to. But for me class in a racehorse is along the lines of what Mah Sish showed in the Hunter Cup, what Smolda showed in the FFA, Smoken up in the SA Cup etc

Or in the TB's Lohnro in the Australian Cup, Black Caviar at Royal Ascot and a "naughty" Helmet at Randwick early in his career.

None of the four above mentioned horses disappointed today - the hiccough being Bling It On galloping on the top corner, dropping back to the tail, entitled to maybe run midfield but nearly running down the winner must have been both bitter sweet for Adam and Harvey - bigger fish to fry in the future.:):)

Spot on Paul, that was remiss of me. Bling It On was impressive, but Aristaeus still had to overcome difficulty to win himself. (I missed the Perfect Art USA connection). Personally I have no problem if someone wants to blow their own trumpet on this forum if they want to...wins are hard to come by at the best of times.

Yes Hollie ... Allblack Stride certainly is establishing himself as a good two year old with two very authorative wins in the heat and final of the crown, bloody good drive by Luke. Unbeaten in four runs now, he looks a dream horse for a reinsman as he sprints and comes back under the driver just beautifully. Reckon even I could steer him. Shame that we didn't get to see Aristaeus get to show his wares after galloping and crashing - he is off for spell. Thought the midweek crowds at Bathurst looked a bit threadbare.

According to NZ Harness Racing Weekly this week's edition...
ALL BLACK STRIDE having a short let up in preparation for a mid May trans-tasman fight to Christchurch for his main 2yo targets....
NZ Sires Stakes ($150,000), to qualify for the 2yo Jewels Emerald (150,000)
NZ Yearling Sales Series Stakes (225,000 but not counting towards Jewels eligibility due to it's closed entry criteria).
According to the article quoting the owner..."We should find out exactly how good he is there".

Heat 1 - I think the Mccarthy horses just look better than them and could clear out, although very hard to line up interstate form, also obviously the race experience at Menangle which is very different to Albion Park or Melton

Heat 2 - Bespoke Artist looked really good in his heat and should be suited by the track, he's a big long striding horse with plenty of speed, much like Mccarthy's 2yo who is drawn right next to him, should be a cracking clash. Messini was the sales topper that year I think.

Good assessment Barry! Exactly what happened.

VIC form not equal to NSW on the semi's run tonight.

Although those that made the final will be better next Sunday for the Menangle experience.

May have been different however if semi's/finals at Melton.

If they are all fit, well and sound, the Breeders Crown will be a cracker!!!

I think it can't be understated how different the racing is at menangle compared to Melton and any other 800-1000m track in the country.

Wouldn't say it is nsw horses that are better, just the McCarthy stable. Those qld lads will be at it again next year too if rosati's sales exploits here there and everywhere are any indicator. It's like there is rosati/mccarthy on one side, then there is the rest of us on the other side trying to beat them.

Two year old mentioned earlier in this thread (The Fat Man) poking along nicely in Victoria. Obviously was not right at his first start back in January behind Western Rockstar but has won his next two starts in very impressive fashion. On Tuesday night won easily at Terang by 13 metres breaking Bonavista Bay's race record by just on one second. Might be one to look out for in the future.
