Remember a T-bred one few years back. Was in the now closed Post Office Hotel one lunchtime. Always looked at first starters and see if names related to breeding. Don't remember mares name but had wife suggestions in it... 'Bride' something or 'Other half' something I think. Do remember laughing so much could hardly breath when saw horse name and wondering how it got through.

Race started and caller mentioned horses name and you could hear his voice change as soon as he said it. Whole pub in fits...

Horse name changed after first start.

Don't recall new name but old one...

Always a Virgin is about to have some pearlers! Whoseme father, dontknocktilutry and Busted (out of I'm sneaky) are just a few of the ones that caught my eye so far. The Yankee galloper Hoof Hearted is a cracker I think.
For those familiar with Wagga will understand a greyhound name that my mates owned, Action at Saxons (not sure of spelling but something of the sort) I think it is named along similar lines to Lees Bathurst one.
Gotashotaway was another well named horse with a good story behind it.

I think there's a difference between clever names and just plain dumb names and looking at the fields at times we have a fair share of the latter. Used to be a pacer racing in Perth many years ago named Fish and Chips......how dumb is that?
A horse is a majestic animal and it deserves a name befitting. Some favourite names of mine include Tattered n Torn, Bridge of Friendship, Divide and Rule, The Persian Tiger, Paragon Of Virtue, Vain, Cap d'Antibes, Iga Ninja, Starglow, Starcraft the list goes on and all the names mentioned are gallopers from the past. The old saying is ''you never see a champion with a dumb name.''

We have a thread for these too Rod - Facepalm Names just below

Have to submit one of our own for this thread, and the orphan foal mentioned by Teecee reminded me.

We bred a filly foal a few years ago and during her first day we lost her mum with a prolapsed uterus, we had 3 vets working on her all day but still lost her, anyhow* we then turned our attention to the orphaned foal.

She was foaled on the very morning we were due to leave on 2 weeks holiday, which was fully booked and paid for, we asked a few friends if they could do the job while we took off but that was never going to work ( if ever you've raised an orphan foal you'd know).

So we raised her on the bottle, fed every hour on the hour 24/7, no sleep worth mentioning for 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!

When she drank more than 500 mls she would lay back down in the bedding moaning with a gut ache.

Her stable name was easy to pick...... MONA.

Time came to register a name, that was easy too, Miss Holiday.

She never raced due to an injury, but she has produced one foal for one winner at 175:1 mentioned about 12 months ago on here.

Back in the early 70's Jack Suters had a horse that he had a lot of fun with, simply because of his name....people would watch the horse work, and being inquisitive with a view to the punt, would ask Jack what is his name, Jack would reply " ask him", "very funny but what's his name?" "ask him"....as you can see this could go for a while with varying outcomes because the horse's name was indeed "Ask Him"

The Dam line is Strawberry Fields - Penny Lane - Paperback Writer - Norwegian Wood

I think I will have to fire up the CD collection tonight

I have done a little more research on this line and here is your 'Songbook'

Norwegian Wood is the dam of

Revolution - Eleanor Rigby - Paperback Writer - Hey Jude - Hello Goodbye - Dont Pass Me By - Dont Let Me Down - Rocky Raccoon - Lucy In The Sky

Paperback Writer is the dam of

Penny Lane - Yellow Submarine - Sergeant Pepper - Let It Be - Blue Jay Way - Mean Mr Mustard - Back In The USSR - Mother Nature

Penny Lane is the dam of

Lennon - Magical Mystery Tour - Strawberry Fields - Across The Universe

Strawberry Fields is the dam of

Bungalow Bill - Inner Light

That is the direct line but you can also throw in

Let It Be is the dam of Band On The Run

Back In The USSR is the dam of Hard Days Night and Lady Madonna

Magical Mystery Tour is the dam of McCartney and Give Peace A Chance

For those of you unlucky enough to be too young to know these songs -
Do You Want To Know A Secret, I Want To Tell You I've Got A Feeling if you take A Day In The Life or Anytime At All you will find you Dig It Because if you Ask Me Why - Its For You. Goodbye I'll Be Back

What about the trotting winner at Maryborough during the week.

Defence Got Jumped by Wicked Subwoofer out of Mental Power.
Nothing logical there, BUT Wicked Subwooffer has only left one foal, so muct have jumped de fence.

The breeding gives no clues as to ability, but the family did produce Paleface Adios

Good one Noel, I hadn't heard of Wicked Subwooffer and it all makes sense now.
Sounds a lot like the one Brenno told us about 'Daddywho' (see post 67)

Hi Noel, I know the breeder/trainer of Defence Got Jumped. You are right, one morning he found that Wicked Subwoofer then a 2yo colt had jumped the fence and was in with some mares. He then got him gelded and hoped that he hadn't served any of the mares. Not long after Mental Power went to Adelaide to race and won a few races there. When she returned he sent her to a stud to be served and they informed him that she was only about a month away from having a foal . She was a big mare and didn't even look in foal. Of course he had forgotten about the fence jumping incident by then so it took a while and some dna testing to find the father !
Defence Got Jumped has a heap of ability but no brains ! He galloped in his first 6 starts , often just after hitting the front in the home straight then in start 7 he finally trotted all the way and won. Lets hope he has turned the corner and wins a lot more !

Wonder what the "brilliant names" that earned Darren Cole a fine were?
$100 for each !

Trainer Darren Cole pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of Rule 95(4) which states: A person making application to name a horse shall ensure that all proposed names comply with Regulation 1 Schedule B Australian Stud Book Regulations. The particulars of the charge being that Mr Cole submitted two inappropriate horse names on a Harness Racing Victoria ‘Application for Naming’ document. Mr Cole was fined $200. In assessing penalty Stewards acknowledged Mr Cole’s guilty plea, forthright evidence and the nature of the names submitted.

Well spotted breno! My calcs say a colt 318 days old got a filly 311 days old in foal (or vice versa). And she had it before her 2nd birthday. Goes ok for a horse out of an unraced mare by unraced sire!

I thought I had spotted another story like the one above when I was looking up Ima Dad at Yarra Valley yesterday but this gelding has no progeny so it would seem a strange choice even if the dam is Daddy Pay

Was actually going to use the name 'Peruggia' Kev which is why I spotted it. Story goes that after he knocked it off he hid it safely in a trunk under his bed for 2 year. He got nabbed later trying to flog it.

The one I was going to use the name for was born a filly. So not really fair to give her a blokes name. But it suited her breeding...

Safely Kept x The Perfect Mona

All Whitey Then would be considered a questionable phrase but it is quite clever when the dam is Wrong Comment and the horse is a grey who will end up white

An impressive winner at Bendigo last night in a slick 1.53

And the first careeer training double for Tim Mannix. Tim was at work at Bush's Produce Store while All Whitey Then and 2yo Valkyrie both won.
The Mannix family have been involved for a long time. Tim's grandfather Norm drove at the opening meeting of Lord's Raceway in 1954

Looking at the replay, maybe they should try him as a trotter as that is what dad produces and he is not going to keep up as a pacer
