Dan's normally a great caller, but had an appsolute shocker tonight at Ballarat.

Race one, missed " a matter of course" galloping out and poleaxing the entire back row.

Race 5, missed "nike franco" galloping out then galloping multipliable times before settleing.

All this happen right under his nose in the front staight, lucky I was watching the races and not listening to them otherwise I would have never know what had happen to those horses.

And then saying "bling it on" must have run a 25 quarter to get round them when the leader had ran the first quarter in 32.5, come on Dan your better than that.

It does not sound as though he had his best night Jack. It is a fair enough thread topic but it made me think - we really are a strange mob, with all his good calling nights it is highly likely that none of us have ever started a thread to give him a wrap

ps I might try going on a positive kick but I will leave the callers to you guys as my new bionic ear is not at max output/input yet

It probably wasn't Dan's best night of calling. But even champion horses and sportsman have off days/nights. I think in Victoria we sometimes forget we have 3 very talented race callers in Mielecki, McIntosh & Rail who serve the industry very well. My dampener on the night was Mick Guerin, surely he has past his used by date about 10 years ago. He adds nothing to the Sky coverage, his views are so subjective as he only pumps up/tips his friends horses. Guerin was far more damaging to the Sky broadcast than Mielecki.

We all have an off night behind the binocs from time to time and it shows we are only human.... Dan is the best caller in Australia, in my humble opinion, and is a great yardstick for all harness callers..... I can say that no racecaller of any code ever goes to the track intending to muddle horses or get a photo finish wrong. As I said some days are diamonds and some days are stone and without doubt if last night was a stone day for Dan then it will be a long stretch of diamonds from him forthcoming..
Cheers

Dan's peerless as a Harness racing commentator, It's pretty hard to keep your eyes on all the horses in a race unless you have eyes like Marty Feldman.

Spot on Richard.... He is the best....
Kyle, I think it has become much more difficult for the modern day caller because nowadays everyone sees the same thing...ie, the race is there for most to see. The ability to paint the picture, so to speak is less likely. That said, I always try to call as though I'm calling to a radio audience, for the simple fact that not everyone has pay tv, not everyone is in a TAB and some may be in there car when a race is on. The real art is to find the happy medium, the balance between going OTT and painting the picture, and to that end, Dan does this the best....

Dan and Fred and Jimmy are my fav callers, in no particular order. I have time for Craig and Lachlan. Australia has fantastic race callers over all compared to the rest of the world!

Smoken, the landscape changed with the advent of TV coverage... In the days when radio was king, a caller could get away with so much...nowadays there is nowhere to hide when you make a mistake. One thing I know categorically - punters are tough critics when it comes to callers, but race callers are their own harshest critics....our country is blessed with what we have.... And let's not forget that many overseas callers at the top are expats....

Well said Fred! It must be the Australian accent and passion regarding horse racing and greyhounds!

It has a lot to do with the trailblazers, the pioneers of the art form.... The days when callers weren't allowed on track and had to call from trees, backs of trucks.... Flats that were located 100's of metres from the track..... Their style, it's ingrained....

Jack, you are a tough marker. I expect you to start a thread every other week when Dan's calling is his usual A grade!

Fred, great acknowledgement of a peer! But let me give you a wrap.... I love watching Menangle or Penrith when you are calling. You are truly an excellent caller yourself! (this is a little self-indulgent but I will never forget you calling Gamechanger's win in the 2yo APG heats when he broke the Australian record at the time "5 lengths Aimfire, 5 lengths Snap To It, 5 lengths to Equity Kicker" - I also love it when a horse gives them the slip on the turn a you slip in a "oh he said ta-ta on....." Brilliant stuff Fred!)

Remember the race Mitch... Cheers mate, appreciate the kind words.... At the end of the day we do our best and peoples opinions are so subjective.... If you were Victorian it was Bert Bryant, Bill Collins or John Russell, some preferred Joe Brown... Here in Sydney Ken Howard was king, then along came John Tapp, Ian Craig and Des Hoysted.... Yet some preferred he accuracy of Geoff Mahoney.... It all gets down to people's preference. Let's all agree we have the best of all codes

In defense of Dan Mielicki, what looked a good card on paper didn't eventuate on race night. It was a dud last year too. It should be all Melton.

Richard Bell in WA is by far the best trotting racecaller. He does have the advantage of calling the most competitive and exciting racing but you can tell he does his homework.

Bob,
I think you may have been plying your trade elsewhere when this bloke was calling in NSW, and he is now doing a fantastic job on the South Island NZ,, Mark MacNamarra, I have been around for a long time and heard some great callers and all that....and I am definitley not knocking great callers like Fred and others mentioned on here, but gee I reckon Mark just about stands in a class of his own, do yourself a favour, listen to some of his calls with your eyes closed and then watch the race with them open... Mark gets my vote in a field of champions, ANZAC callers leave the rest of the world for dead!

Cheers,
Dan

As far as harness racing is concerned both Dan Mielicki and Fred Hastings are outstanding......couldn't separate them, Richard Bell also a very good caller but has been making a few mistakes in the past weeks, minor but noticeable. For mine the best at the moment is Chris Barsby didn't like his race call style at first, but I think he has really improved and his calls of the Queensland Winter Carnival were brilliant particularly The Blacks a Fake.

You are not getting him back. He is the best here in Nz by a country mile and the best caller in my time in the game in Nz. Hugely admired here in Nz

He is most definitely a very talented racecaller Viv, hope you are wrong and we get him back one day!!

On a more serious note, I hope Mark does whatever pleases Mark and his family, he certainly deserves that much!

Cheers,
Dan

I have to laugh at Sky talking up Rick McIntosh's call of the Galleywood at Warrnambool today - I cannot see how it is a good call when the caller does not pace himself and is out of voice before the finish

I think poor Rick had come down with something before the races today Kev, was calling for the nurse before the Galleywood. Does Jimmy J call the gallopers?
