To make sure I balance out my negativity, I am starting this thread and I am going to keep it going (with your help I hope). I think I may have started such a thread long ago but this time I want it to flourish. It must not be in place of positive threads and a bit of positive duplication never hurt.
Posts should be totally positive - with no 'if onlys' or 'buts'.
Teecee feel free to delete any that are 50/50's
I mostly only follow VIC so even with the help of my fellow Victorians we are going to cover 1/6th at best of all the positives to be found in Australian (&NZ? if TC lets us) Harness Racing

Positives only eh? Okay, will try!
I reckon this deserves some publicity.
Well known Melbourne trots historian/journalist John Peck has put the finishing touches to a treasure trove of stats and information which will be made public soon on the HRV website.
He has researched the top five trainers, and their number of wins for each metropolitan season since 1931/1932.
The same has been done for the leading metro driver. Incredibly records for this go back to 1859/1860 when the first metropolitan meeting in Australia was conducted at Flemington Racecourse.
John is also researching results of all Victorian trotting races that have not previously been published in the several different year books that have been printed over the years (since replaced by the harness website) - a massive undertaking.
For the record, Gordon Rothacker with nine trainers titles and 14 drivers premierships heads both lists.

Young reinswoman Taylah Schembri landed her first race win at Monday's Warragul trots meeting, and recorded the equal fastest race time ever seen at Warragul in the process.
A dashing front running drive by Taylah on Longtan Tigerman in the second race produced a mile rate of 1:56.7 for the 1790 metre distance, equalling the time standard set on the Warragul Pacing Bowl back in 1996 for the shorter 1725 metre journey.
Recent redevelopment works on the track make it somewhat faster than it was 20 years ago, however such a fast time is still relatively rare on a smaller circuit such as Warragul, so it will be interesting to see if that mark can be improved over time.
Longtan Tigerman's win took 1.4 seconds off the previous fastest time for 1790 metres set last month when the redeveloped track opened for business.
Taylah drove Longtan Tigerman for trainer Gaita Pullicino, and it was the horse's first win in almost three years, and sixth win all up for the much improved eight-year-old.
Overall the ladies enjoyed a great day at Warragul on Monday, sharing in seven of the eight winners as either trainer or driver.
Cranbourne horsewoman Jayne Davies prepared two winners - Gonski and Mister Clooney, while Pearcedale reinswoman Simone Walker scored a narrow win with Stoned Again in an exciting Trotters Handicap.
Kate Gath drove the roan filly Looks Like Heaven to win the third race while Jodi Quinlan produced the second track record of the day when Intergalactic came from well back in the field to win the fifth event.
Avalon trainer Amanda Grieve wrapped up a great day for the females when Wilusi Blues won the last event, the second leg of a driving double for reinsman Chris Alford.
Lightly raced Montu won the sixth event for father son combination Ross and Greg Sugars.
Racing returns to Warragul on Monday, February 9.

A track that has a decent dining room (esp one that opens onto the track) is a big positive. On a somewhat average day like yesterday at Stawell, the dining room was a good harness place to be. The family and friends of Judith and James McLeod were all enjoying a meal together on James McLeod & Judith McLeod Memorial day, the boys from David O Jones Mitre 10 hardware were treated to a special meal as sponsors of one of the races and the whole room had a good vibe.

Scott Torney has driven quiet a few winners actually but l think the relief may have come as this horse has been in winning positions before and has made mistakes but he was run queried a couple of times when he has been in the placings or just behind the placegetters the question being asked was showing lack of vigor. as he wasnt game to use the whip. anyway well done Scotty the hard work has paid off.

We had 2 x 2yr olds in at Bathurst one night both in seperate divisions ( colts and a fillies ) The colt sat 1x1 and won untouched and the filly led and half way up the straight was going to sleep the driver gave her one across the back side, she bucked twice and ended up winning by a head oh so lucky to have finished without hitting the deck after this the whip wasn't used again on her she just didn't enjoy it even being wiped with it she would play up.

Crombie A sets all-age Yonkers track record
Up first was Crombie A (Brian Sears, $5.60), who earned his place in the record book with the fastest mile ever in Westchester not involving plane, train or automobile. Leaving from post position No. 4 as the 9-5 favorite, Crombie A had no choice but to watch as Forty Five Red (George Brennan) threw down the gauntlet…as in :26.3, :54.2 and 1:21.4.
If Forty Five Red was done off those numbers, he didn't get the memo. Texican N (Eric Carlson) was closing ranks from a loose pocket, while Crombie A, floating off the cones from fourth in an understandably gapped-out field, was hitting his best stride.
Forty Five Red had a length-and-a-quarter lead into the lane, but the fractions were finally catching up with him. He hung tough, but faltered late. Crombie A ended up outgaming Texican N by three-quarters of a length in a life-best 1:50.1.

The Globe Derby sire-line is still alive.
Ironhide, a 3yo son of Pass The Mustard won at Melton last night.
So, as he's a colt, the Globe Derby line, just about extinct, may have a possible spark left:
Globe Derby > Van Derby> Van Hall> Cute Van>Vanderport>Pass The Mustard> Ironhide
But the big highlight might be that Ironhide was foaled when his dam Royal Ann ( by Vestalba Rainbow from a Royal Dollar mare) was 25yo, and her previous foal was 5 years before that !

Good get Noel. A surprise winner but they must have seen enough to bring him all the way to Melton so you never know - if he can keep improving he may become a 'homebred' sire one day. While not strong, the dam line is the only arm of family A186 to show up at all. Ironhide's much older sister Royal Equity won 15 and finished 4th in a Ballarat Cup in which Sokyola finished 5th

That's what it is all about Kev, a good time and a couple of "small" bets. This type of promotion and activity does more for racing than people sitting at home in front of the TV placing bets. My hat goes off to those people who attend the track on racing days/nights and help to support the industry even on those cold wintry nights and a 6 goal breeze at Melton. Not sure of their name/s (Aaron White?), there might even be 2 of them but the guys who call Alexandra Park and Adddington are excellent although they do tend to wax lyrical on occasions. They bring a race alive and have good knowledge of the horses and the background/history of them.

Looks that way>
Big change though in the number of races at tracks:
11 last night at Shepparton, 11 tonight at Bendigo, 12 tomorrow night at Kilmore, 11 at Mildura on Friday, followed by 9 at Melton. 11 at Cranbourne on Saturday night followed by 10 at Cobram on Sunday.
That's 75 races in 6 days at 7 tracks.
This big change may bring its own set of issues..float parking, stall availability, and increased workload for vets, stewards, race day staff and vounteers.
But it looks really positive.

Thanks Kev
The Oxley Feed Mill Veteran Driver's Trot, and Memorial Race Night at Lord's Raceway next Friday night looks to be even better this year with invitations going out to veterans who have finished driving.
Getting together in the Winning View Room at Lord's Raceway will be people like: Frank Evans, Noel and Colin Redwood, Peter Ward, Kevin Allen, Bill White, Stuart and Des Rothacker, Ted Zimmer, Neville Welsh, Keith Pratt, Geoff Cakebread, Graeme Dalton and over 20 more.
Add the drivers competing in the $10,000 main race: Brian Gath, Jim O'Sullivan, Noel Shinn, Ginger Gleeson, Peter Rothacker, Peter Manning, Bulldog Nicholson, and Russell Thompson (Cliff Powell and Bill Spiteri were balloted out unfortunately as only 8 trotters accepted) and it looks like the driver board at the old Royal Melbourne Showgrounds.
Many a tall tale will be told.
How far is Bendigo from other tracks?
I would like to give a big shout out to Deborah Woodley and Nigel Johns who are such strong supporters and advocates of trotters in WA. Without them, there would be none. Literally. There are many naysayers (I too used to be one, as did my Dad. Truth be told I spat my lemonade when he announced he'd bought one) and Nigel Johns does make up half the fields over this way but it's growing with many of the big trainers now bringing trotters over to race. Our girl Sunnys Little Whiz was awarded with a lovely embroidered rug and trophy last night, kindly donated by the aforementioned for winning Pinjarra Trotter of the Year and it makes me realise what an uphill battle the industry is on right now but how Deb and Nigel don't give up and keep on pushing for the sport they love. Such inspiration.
I've heard word that WA will have its first 2 year old races next season or the one after and my family bred our first Trotter this year in support. Here's to more trotter races and the rise of many classic and group races in WA in the future!

Bendigo.....is the Centre of Victoria ! We race 43 times a year and run official trials over 60 times.
Within an hour's drive, you get to tracks at Maryborough, Kilmore, Wedderburn, Elmore, Charlton and maybe Echuca.
An hour and a half gets you to Shepparton, Ballarat, Melton, Boort, Yarra Glen (the back way) , and St Arnaud.
That's why the Breeders Crown was such a well attended event for the first few years of it's existence, being run at it's founding home, in the center of the state.

I am worried the thread could be losing its 'positive only' status but then again a good debate is a positive thing.
Historically horse owners have never needed punters - they raced out of a love for competition and the pride of winning and some will always continue to do so
You are however right that punters don't need horses - a coin or two will do or maybe a couple of flies is more to your fancy Brendan?

"Hi everyone,
I'm also reading this trail with sadness, as we want to encourage young people to our sport. In regards to syndications, effective 1 July 2018, ASIC increased their requirements for all states for syndications. That has meant that HRV (as the lead regulator) has had to raise requirements for anyone advertising for people to join a syndicate. There are alternative approaches and I would suggest that anyone considering a syndicate to talk to HRV (Tori Glenister or John Briffa).
Hi Danny O'Brien, I would like to understand the sentence, 'The stable was not getting a fair go as far as i was concerned so I wrote to the minister of sport, the chairman of stewards and the CEO. In hindsight a silly idea.' I have no recollection of that correspondence, so can only assume that it occurred prior to Jan 2017? In any case, I'm happy for you to contact me directly if there are any ongoing concerns. In regards to the syndication, can I suggest that you/Leroy give John Briffa a call? If there are other factors influencing Leroy's decision, then I would be pleased to hear them because as I said, we want to lower the barriers to entry for young people.
Cheers, David"
I was really hoping to see a response like this in the thread which I have copied this from

Have to question the track though as many horses and drivers had difficulty with the low camber on the turns.
Have a look at the Elmore Cup.
The leader seemed to have trouble keeping a straight path to the finish, and the consequent winner found space to get through, even without a passing lane.

Government commits to extra funding for stakes increase if re-elected
Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) has welcomed tonight’s news that a re-elected Labor Government would see record prizemoney paid out in Victoria over the next two years.
Speaking at the annual Gordon Rothacker Medal presentation dinner at Crown Palladium, Racing Minister Martin Pakula unveiled an additional $6m commitment from the Andrews State Government to harness racing should it win the next election.
HRV said it would pass on the additional funding if secured to industry participants through increased stakemoney at all levels from 1 January. The changes would be:
Restricted class races increased from $4000 to $4500
$5000 Career Penalty races increased to $7000
Metropolitan class races increased from $16,000 and $18,000 to $20,000
Semi-feature metropolitan class races increased from $20,000 to $24,000
A $10,000 minimum race stake would be applied on all metropolitan nights at Melton
Country Cup prizemoney increased by $222,500
Pryde’s EasiFeed Victoria Cup prizemoney increased from $200,000 to $250,000
Minimum payment for fifth to last increased to $140
Quotes from HRV Chairman Dale Monteith
“Harness Racing Victoria welcomes tonight’s significant funding commitment from the Andrews State Government should it win the next election. This additional $6million would enable us to increase prizemoney further over the next two years after paying out more prizemoney than ever before in season 2017-18. This will benefit all industry participants as the stakes increase will be across a range of classes, from restricted races right through to Grand Circuit level.”
“Feedback from the industry has consistently been that $5000 career penalty races are not popular, so we would lift the minimum stake for a career penalty race to $7000. HRV would also take steps to increase both the quantity of metro races and the associated prizemoney.”
“An increase in restricted class prizemoney to $4500 would increase to $140 the payment for horses that finish from fifth to last place, and thereby help alleviate some of the pressure on trainers arising from costs such as petrol and feed.”

A Good Thing by HRNSW
HRNSW will pay NSW licenced trainers $17.50 per horse per week based on horses drawn in fields (including emergencies) and starters in trials based only on horses nominated through HRNSW Handicappers.
For sake of clarity a horse will be subsidised only once per week (Sunday to Saturday) not for multiple races and/or trials during that period. The assistance commences from November 1 through to January 31.
There is no application required for this assistance.

Best filly by a long, long way this season. Stylish Memphis has to settle for second to her twice, Dr Susan couldn't get near her in NZ. They both dominated in Australia while Amazing Dream went on to win the Northern Oaks and Derby. Four Group One wins plus the $150k sales final in her past five starts. She should pick up a fillies or mares race at Albion Park, you'd think! Either that or stay in NZ and be thrown to the wolves in free for alls.
She is a little star and very charismatic to watch.
WA now provides sectional times for each horse. Whether punters use this information I'm not sure but from a trainer's perspective, it provides a great lens into how your horse performed when coming from back in the field. MORE OF THIS!

That is Very much a positive Katie
It took me a while to get my head around metres gained. To give me a quicker picture of the race (and save me some maths) I would like it if they had a column saying how many metres each horse was off the lead at the 800m (add margin and metres gained/lost) and maybe highlight the 800 leader (the one whose margin + metres gained/lost is the same, this number is always a loss unless they led at the 800 and went onto win, in which case it will be zero)
Race 6 for GP on 11/8 is a good one for learning how to interpret the table see below
https://www.rwwa.com.au/harness-hub/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2020/08/Gloucester_Park_11082020.pdf
9th placed American Rock the death horse as he has a (1) in the column after his 800 time was actually the leader as his Margin and Metres Gained (Lost) are the same ie 20.3
The winner Lord Rosco (who was on the pegs as he has a 0 after the 800 time) although he won by .5m and beat the bell leader (above) by 20.3m he had a gain of +.6m in the last 800 as that is how far he was off the 800 leader
2nd placed The Black Cardinal finished stronger as he had a gain of +5.1m but he had been 5.6m (5.1 gain + 0.5 margin) off the bell leader and so was .5m off despite running 0.33 faster for the last 800
you could say Be On Guard held on for 3rd place as he lost -2.3m in the final 800. He ended up 7.1m behind the winner so he must have been only 4.8m behind the bell leader
Last placed Gonzo Shadow lost -10.9m in the final 800. He ended up 21.9m behind the winner so he must have only been 11m behind the bell leader
I did this to make it clearer for myself but I am not sure I have helped LOL
I am now wondering whether a table in finishing order with each individuals LT, Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 (with the fastest for each split highlighted) and their posn (including width) for each split might actually suit me better as I am clearly still struggling with metres gained
ps I was up bloody early looking at this so may be there is a little sleep deprivation thrown in
WA are positively trying to help
;) You cannot beat the actual Video Replays (the greatest positive of this century)

I agree somewhat, a position at bell column would be helpful.
This company actually provides this data for every state and the costs aren't exorbitant. pgdata.com.au
If I was a punter, I'd for sure sign up for this

Thanks again Katie
So is it only free for WA for a promo period?
I was thinking about it some more and what I reckon would be even better would be a pictogram like that of the finish for the 800m as well
IMO it would give a quick summary of the race for form students (without having to watch every replay)

Northam, Bunbury, Perth and Pinjarra meetings are provided for every meeting up to 4 days after via RWWA. You can pay to have the sectionals emailed for every state. I'm not sure if they're available for free for other states

Addington use the STRIDEMASTER system. An Australian system I believe and is freely available on the addington website with any amount / more than you need of data for each runner.

And it is really good. You get to see which horse is really getting home, which ones are just hanging in and which ones have run out of gas. Over a few runs, you can see a pattern in individual horses.

Team Teal
The Ladies Luncheon at Horsham
Duncan McPherson
Kerryn Manning I noticed her involvement in the Ladies Luncheon and as usual with the Pony Trots - all the while competing at the meeting and in the Drivers Championship

One of the biggest positives in our sport is Longevity
I see Gordon Rothacker Medallist Neville Welsh trained the winner of R1 at Echuca tonight
Neville drove winners as far back as the 50's
Murray Mac and some of his other Showgrounds stars were what attracted me to the trots

Can't understand how one as young as I can remember these things!

Anybody that watched the Elitloppet would have noticed how beautiful their infield looked
I am surprised however that they are suggesting the club will be able to use the infield for marquees, children's activities and other entertainment on race days
I would have thought that without a barrier between the infield and the track that that would be a no-no on race days - maybe they are going to have an inner fence as well as pegs?

Yes I did Trev and I was surprised how many were there
There were 4 big dining groups (10-20 people)
One was a birthday (for the clerk of the course), one was the race sponsors and another from nearby Eventide homes and there was no doubt varying levels of interest in the trots amongst them
But when I continued outside, I found more than 50 under the verandah before R1
I am sure the club would take that
ps the old BEEUTE got a run as today's limo

Brilliant work by Club Menangle to get Dr Harry doing a feature story on the Pony Trots in the latest episode of Better Homes and Gardens. You can still catch it on 7 plus. It is the shows latest episode (Season 28 Ep40). It is only 8 minutes into the show and runs for 6 minutes
