ITS JUST AFTER 4PM & THE HEAT IS STILL UP THERE. This is one hell of a concern for the horses welfare. I'm damn sure I wouldn't want to run in that heat.

The majority of people have their horses worked before 8 or 9 am . I did. My Dad did, well my dad was way before that!!
Treat your horses the way you would treat yourself he used to say.

Any opinions people????

ITS 35.

I cannot find the thread but I remember discussing this last summer when Vic moved plenty of meets forward to start before 11am to finish before 3pm when the heat really hits

It is much cooler at Harold Park ;) I notice that Campbelltown is one of the hottest places in the state

Yes. Correct. I know horses really suffer in the heat in the paddock let alone run as fast as they can around a race track.
Why can they not do the same as Vic did or go to twilight .

Maybe they should turn the office air conditioners around at Menangle & point them out at the track. I'm sure no one would mind.

Do you have the same heat scratching allowance in the east as we have in WA?

Yes I think its 40 Katie . BUT in saying that I think they should go to what Kev said they did/do in Vic (start at 11am) or go to twilight , for the horses sake .
They are going on about no whips for the look of the sport, that people are now more in tune to their horses & the young generation are kinder to the horse, well what about the heat , I don't like the horses racing in the heat obviously. It knocks some around more that others.

In Vic its 38....still to high. I don't think anyone would personally want to run in that heat. If the poor horse doesn't want to run he gets a whip on his bum. I suppose that the new whip rule will give the horse some sort of buffer.

My brother-in-law told me that for the gallops it is all about humidity - thus the use of a 'wet bulb'

we were watching the Meadowlands at the pub tonight, driving snow with big gusts of white air coming out of their nostrils. interesting to see the other side

Gallops Vic tried to beat the heat at Benalla today by starting R1 at 10.40am and the last at 2.15 but at nearby Wangaratta it was already 39° at 12.30 (but only felt like 32°)

No early start but it could be a stinker at Yarra Glen today

Good move by Mildura

But unfortunately the heat might not drop until at least 8.30

Luckily St Arnaud has been able to move their meet on a day to Tuesday to beat the heat

Ballarat tomorrow night should be pushed back an hour - it could be 37 at 6.13 tomorrow
I would also consider scrapping R4&8 at Mildura on Friday so that it could be pushed back an hour - it could easily be 40 there at 7.10 Friday
Finishing Charlton at 2.10 tomorrow and moving Shepparton to Monday are good moves

It was 38 for the last at 2.10 at Charlton today
It was 36 for the first at Ballarat tonight and it still was an hour later
I hope Mildura get their thunderstorm tomorrow as it was 43 there at 7pm tonight

Hopefully what is on the radar brings relief to Mildura not humidity as they are 42° at 3pm - the same as yesterday, which turned into 43° at 7pm (and even the Apparent temp was over 40°)

What do they do at 7.10pm for R1 if this is the case?

Edit: With 9 races, the best they could do is start at 8.35 with 25mins between races and they would finish just before midnight (or abandon now)

No wonder NZ is a wonderful place to raise horses - they very rarely get a 30° day

Well it was 41° felt like 38° for the first but the sun wasn't out so that had to be some consolation

Well the first 3 races all run in 40°
The winner/fav for R2 was certainly in a lather of sweat (unless he is a roan)
Interesting to note that the gallops abandoned tonight's Moonee Valley meet yesterday
While it has now dropped to 37 feels like 37 at 8.30pm in Mildura, it is only 26 feels like 25 in Melbourne

Bloody ridiculous 10.30pm Mildura = 38° and feels like temp also 38°
(last of the weather reports - sorry but it is another interest of mine)

I would not be surprised if Boort's 11.03 start is to beat the heat
One cannot be sure how hot it is expected to get there today with Vic districts so big and the massive gap in the forecasts map between Warracknabeal and Echuca

It is too hot to be racing at Mildura even tonight

The expected max for today is 39° and it will get there at it is already 36.5° at midday
There is no drop in temp until 8.30pm so more than half the meet will be run in stifling heat
