Unfortunately it was a very cold day at Pepper Tree which spoilt the day a bit. Despite that the Vandykes did an excellent job of presenting their stud and the stallions to quite a reasonable crowd.
While all eyes were on RNR Heaven, it was Sportswriter that everyone was talking about after the parade. He is a very attractive Artsplace stallion.
RNR Heaven also presented very well and the much debated subject of how big he is was put to rest. He is 15.1 hands.
Sale of broodmares followed the stallion parade. I don’t have any prices but there was basically nobody wanting to buy broodmares – many were passed in.
I thought the yearlings sold OK but not as strongly as most vendors would have liked. Again I don’t have many prices but the SBSW colt from Kept For Pleasure was the highest priced yearling at $110k. A RNR Hanover filly from Postmark sold for $40k and the Mach Three filly from Indigenous was passed in at $33k.
My Jereme’s Jet – Socialize colt was a really nice individual but only made a disappointing $20k in the ring which I didn’t accept. Within 1 minute I had him sold for $30k and had another 3 enquiries within the next 10 minutes. That was at the bottom end of what I thought he might make. At least that will pay for a few service fees. I now have 3 FSS colts left to sell in Melbourne in Feb.
took one look out the window at the weather and decided not to attend, does anyone have what price lot 42 the badlands colt made?
Passed in at $12k
thanks mango
If people thought the Peppertree sale didn't bring good results it's worth a look at the results of the clearance sale at Spreydon Lodge last thursday there were bargains to be had there. Just off the topic the fastest at todays Ready To Run was 56.1 and there are still a couple to trial Wednesday.
Thanks Eliteblood for the update on the sale.
RNR Heaven will have a big job ahead of him with the he competition he has , his size will only worry some NSWelshmen that think bigger is better. CUFire,VJasper
All other advertised standardbred stallions are 15.2, that makes him not as small as CUFire,VJasper
He is definitely bigger than CUF and VJ. I don't understand the reference to NSWelshmen - do they think differently to breeders in other states with regard to stallion size ?
I don't think RNR Heaven has to be afraid of the competition as much as they need to be afraid of him. I'm sure he will get a large book of mares and will get an excellent shot at making it as a sire.
WARNING- RANT COME WAFFLE FOLLOWING...
On the size thing Troops...taken in isolation IMO it's all such a subjective wank and I say this because I reckon there are so many variables beyond just that which a simple height measurement indicates.
Even then I'm also rather dubious about some of the stated sizes. You've only got to go through many of the sire guides and see how many of them are said to be 15.2/15.3. How many of you ever get in the yard and measure them? Does it matter anyway? I've looked at a heap of stallions over the years and I've never once done it. I just use the old peepers. Not a lot of science & certainty involved there admittedly.
For example, there's 16h & plain old hulking & there's 16h & powerful/athletic...and similarly at the other end of the scale there's 14.3h hands & solid/muscular & there's 14.3h & built like the bastard child of a greyhound that had stuck one into a pipecleaner...and of course in between there are all forms of variation on a theme.
Also, it seems that this discussion is virtually always based on the size of this stallion or that one but it seems nobody ever really talks of the size of their mares in relation to the stallion/s being discussed, this despite the mares playing at the very least an equally important role in the outcome.
Personally I don't like small mares & especially if they're small & also finely built &/or short coupled and unfortunately I've learnt the hard way there.
On the other hand I don't mind smaller stallions but only if they're also powerfully built/solid with it and if they also had a very good length of stride. Similarly I don't mind big horses as long as they're not really heavy built/boned along with it & again just as long as they had a good length of stride relative to their size.
Mares wise, I like the long barrelled mares, ones that look like they've got an extra set of ribs to most horses and I like to see a mare with the hindquarters of Florence Griffith-Joyner and the walk of one of the ladies that ply their trade nightly towards the Kings X tunnel end of William St. here in Sydney.
It's also the Gospel truth that there are a number of sires at stud in both AUS & NZ who's widely advertised size would bare little or no resemblance to reality should someone view them with the naked eye and those that stand them know this too btw. There are horses advertised to be 15.1 that are closer to 14.2/14.3 and there are horses advertised to be 16h that are significantly bigger than that, a couple that I know of are easy closing in on 16.3.
Don't believe the hype. Go look at them yourself if you can or if not then take the advice of someone you can rely on to see them in much the same way as you do.
My very knowledgeble friend in the US said that whole family (Rocknroll Heaven) is small. Don't get me wrong, he is a huge fan of the horse. I am actually not really bothered with horse's heights as it is, especially if the family is of average or large size and said horse seems to be the only small one.
I am only asking because I would like to use him, but the mare we have pencilled in is also from a family of small horses. Built like a tank, but not tall. While I don't get caught up in sire sizes, I'm not out to intentionally breed a small one either, if that makes sense. People say size doesn't matter with racehorses, but I am yet to find someone that says that they are trying to breed a small horse. lol.
Hey Flashing, there must be a kind of optical illusion aspect to it too...at least with me anyway. We've got two colts, both by the same sire, and if asked I would have said one was no risk a bit taller than the other but a couple of days ago we got their feet done & side by side they're pretty much identical height wise. At the wither & the rump they're line ball. The difference in them is their build. The one I thought was the shorter of the two is very solidly built & muscular while the one that I thought was taller is a bit more to the leaner, maybe just a touch longer side.
Flashing Red,
Prof Angus McKinnon is among the world's leading authorities on equine reproduction. I once quizzed him on the impact that surrogate size has on the size of the resulting animal. His advice was that the size of the foal at birth is influenced by the size of the surrogate but in the end the foal will ultimately grow to the size that is determined by its genetics (given there are no nutritional issues)
Hello Mango,
Thank you for the reply, it is appreciated.
I rang the owners of Kathian Princess ( Kath & Ian ) and the mare was sold in foal to Santanna Blue Chip and sold for the $ 1000. Not a good result for them, especially as this mares Art Major filly was accepted into the Premium Sale, but unfortunately withdrawn due to injury.
Why not !!!
You will need your surrogate and donor mare's breeding cycles to be pretty much in sync to do the ET. With drugs like regumate, prostaglandin, chorulon, etc. that is possible to manipulate but the mares don't always react to the drugs according to the textbook. Generally the vet practices that perform have a paddock full of surrogate mares and just pick one who's cycle is closely aligned to that of the donor mare.
Hi Love Of Courage
Go to www.standardbred.co.nz and click on PGG Wrightson standardbred index and when the page come's up just click on past sale results. You will also see adverts for Ready To Run so if you click on that you will see there time trials they done in n.z yesty.
Don't bother trying with one recipient flash, go for numbers as eliteblood said
Hate to drag you away from such an interesting discussion but I would like to know if there are any recollections about Lot 64 at the sale, filly by CUF from Vizzaro. She looked a good sort in her photo.
She was a good type from the pics I saw. Her dam was a good cut of a thing too, big thumping Artsplace mare she was.
She sold at one of those Alabar Broodmare Sales if I recall correctly or it could have been at the sale GB & Co. held at Kevin Risely's place. Brain dead this morning.
Cheers Mango,
A lot of mares selling in foal for well below the stallion service fee.
I have the full results for the Pepper Tree Sale if anyone needs any prices.
Regards,
LOC
Hello LOC, Scoots away price please.
Mares size has a greater impact on the size of the foal then the stallion.
On the ET issue and size of the surrogates whilst the vets say the size of the surrogate mare has no impact on the size of the foal at maturity many of the people paying for the process are not so sure. My warmblood breeding friends, where size matters, are mightily relieved when their embryo arrives home from the clinic in a mare over 16hh.
Thanks for that Dizzy. Our surrogate mare for the season, she is a big roomy young (5yo) standardbred mare, excellent mother. Had a tonne of ability but succumbed to a career ending injury. She would be at least 16hh but I haven't sticked her, but from the riding horses I have had in the past, who were 16.1 and 16.2hh, she is more to their size. So she would be at least 16hh for sure. And not a big ugly then, she is perfectly in proportion and despite big is not clunky or goofy in anyway. Her foal of last year by Sir Galvinator is outstanding. Shame she has to be a surrogate this year, but we have no one else and she fits our criteria for a surrogate, ie young and big and good mum :)
Just seen the full list of results. With the yearlings, it appears 15 lots were sold and the remaining 16 were either buybacks or withdrawals.
Scoots Away will look cheap after the Ponder (yes Ponder) filly races
