Before heading overseas I was a frequent visitor to Harold Park for 20+ years. I owned a place right next to the Hotel.
Tomorrow night will be my first visit to Menangle. I can get to Newcastle quicker than Menangle.
Other than bogans, with mullets wearing flannies, what can I expect out there. What's the food like ?
Go there with an open mind , not clouded by opinions of others and report back here with your findings on Sunday :-)

I have been to Menangle 3 times and loved it. Tried to get to Melton once and could find no one who knew how I could get there. However, I have been since and while the racing was great the rest could of been any other course anywhere.
Watch out Ray. Any slightly negative comment about Melton in the forums and Leigh (LCL) may follow you around the forums waiting to put you down , no matter what the topic.
BTW, on my three visits to Melton the racing was great but I won't encourage LCL into jumping up and down by making any further comment about the track and facilities than I have previously expressed elsewhere.
So what makes a good Track? I have been to many in NSW, QLD and Vic. I find that from an owner perspective, I like easy access to stables and my horses, from a punter and viewer, I like easy access to the sidelines, the betting facilities and the food. and COMFY seats. (they always seem to forget that part!)

Menangle is on the way up with plenty more to be done.
Melton on the other hand is magnificent as an owner or racegoer.
The facilities are first class and Im hoping Menangle take a good look at the setup down there.
Attended a few big meetings down there and stayed the night at the track........Excellent.

I left Paddington just after 3.30pm and arrived about 15 minutes before the first. Traffic out of the City was a shambles as was the M5. I suspect very few local Harold Park members are making the journey on a regular basis, if at all. The return trip was quicker of course but still an hour and a half.
Once parked and inside, I had a good luck around. I should say from the get go, I'm not a fan of 1400m tracks. I've been in the States for just shy of 3 years and lived 25 minutes from Yonkers near Columbia Uni. I was a regular there at least once a week sometimes two during the meets. I went to the Meadowlands probably a dozen times during my stay and from a spectators perspective, I preferred Yonkers. Atmosphere and action wise, no comparison.
I lived 100m from Harold Park, Menangle is 2 hours way accounting for traffic. Take your Google Maps and stick it : ) Menangle is never going to do it for me but I can see why the horse peeps love it. The surface looks a Millions Dollars and the lighting is excellent. Better than the Meadowlands which hasn't had a cracker spent on it in years. The audio was fine.
I backed a few winners which was nice and I'm glad I made the trip. Will I go again, probably not more than once or twice a year but I suspect they'll probably do well out there once they get the "patrons stuff" down. The food was average and the drink was cold.
Was trying to find a thread about this but this was all I could dig up.
I am from Victoria and am thinking of going up to Menangle this weekend but I know nothing about the place.
What is the best way to get there from the airport?
How far is it by cab to the rocks?
Is there a good place to stay not far from the track?
I have looked up the Menangle House Horse and Jockey Inn - what is it like on a saturday night? Good place for a beer and bet? Is the accomodation there decent or should I just go back into town and stay in the rocks?
I don't really have a tight budget so I have no prob going back into town. But if the local is decent then I'm not a snob either.
Any advice appreciated guys I know absolutely zilch about the place and area in general.

When son and I have gone up stayed at Rydges Campbelltown. Close to track. Great staff. Mind u we went 2 x Miracle Mile and a Len Smith. Many harness racing people staying there then. Great atmosphere before and after races. Bout 45 mins drive from airport...west. Got one of them pokie things next door so guess TAB in there. Long way from town though.

Hi Craig,
I would recommend you hire a car - never done public transport there so cant help with that. If you stay in the city it will take you about 75 mins to drive there on a normal Sunday.
With all of the expansion Menangle hasn't been great of late but most of that will be finished come ID day. I think the facilities are pretty good and it handles crowds well. Given the line up of racing you'd be mad to miss it!
There are 2 massive big screens at Menangle so race viewing is always good.

7 Group 1's...like you said very hard to pass that up. Hopefully Menangle has a stabling facility similar to Melton where you can see the champs close up prior to the races.
Wouldn't mind checking out the Public Transport from a cost perspective so if anyone has experience with heading out to Menangle by train that would be great.
Either way will be good to see Harness Racing get on the Sports pages for the right reasons for a change.

A train from Central station to Campbelltown will take about an hour. The club should have a shuttle bus from Campbelltown Station to the track running on the big event day (give them a call to double check)
If you wanted to train it all the way through you need to change at Campbelltown and get on the Southern Highlands line, getting off at Menangle Park. This is about a 15 minute journey (in addition to however long you have to wait to get your connecting train).
Trains only stop at Menangle Park once every 1.5-2 hours on a Sunday so the shuttle bus to Campbelltown or Macarthur station might be your best bet.
Thats progress for you, a parade ring with ampitheatre seating. Big step up from an ampitheatre track with seating the length of the straight
I live a stones throw from Harold Park and I've never got to Menangle quicker than 1 hour 40 mins on a Sat arvo. I'd set aside 2 hours. If you get there much sooner drop in at the Inn for a Bulmers or Little Creatures. It'll be your last opportunity for a decent beverage : )
I'd take a Tablet with me and or use your phone to have a bet. Punters are a fair way down the pecking order. I've never had a problem with reception, my work phone is on Telstra and I have a tablet on Vodafone. However a mate of mine has Optus and it's poor.
