Those great pics that have appeared recently of the distant and not so distant past are worthy of their own thread. Some may yearn.."If Only"
If someone can remember where and direct me to the others (Thread and post number) I can add copies to this thread.

Real Namebailey martinPosts359Patricia, what a great photo. Look how everyone is dressed, probably plenty of bookies, no TAB, no skychannel, no mobile phones but plenty of manners and respect for each other.

Real Namepatricia ilsleyPosts223Isn't it brilliant , I'm pinching them from a guys twitter (Barry), I hope he doesn't mind, they are worth sharing .
Back in the day you had to wear a suit & my dad always forgot his tie & had been known to beg, borrow or steal someone's so he didn't get into strife. A few of the old crew used to take one for him as well.
Trish, I am not into twitter, blogging etc but I am wondering whether you had better give a link to this Barry's twitter
Bottom right hand corner, the bloke in the hat, that is Trevor Swan.
No neither am I but I follow a few twitter accounts on the internet , I first came across Barry's work from another account (on the net) & I was wrapped at the old photos
he shows. I will PM you just in case he objects to me posting them.
Bit late for that I guess!
Here is one I have - 1985 InterDominion at Moonee Valley which will bring back memories for many I am sure
No Dan that's Isobel, can't you tell us apart yet!
Seriously LMAO re above comments...humour is still alive and well on the forum...if only the crowds still were.
Here's one for you Kev - the trots on free to air TV. Reckon they could resurrect this for a modern audience?
I found this on a tape today, from the first episode of The Saturday Night Show which only lasted seven weeks from Jan 26, 1980. It took over from Penthouse Club which was axed the previous year. I had to cut the live performance by Barry Crocker but you aren't missing much!
Also contains some classic footage as the crowd make their way home after the meeting.
Enjoy!

Thanks Kyle, when I get home to my computer (with listening gear) I will tune into that. I have to be home for Stawell trots tomorrow!

The crowd at HP in 1973.
Dont know if anyones interested this is a pic of D.J.HEATH at Roosevelt in 1966
Great shot!! I hadn't been down that way for a few years and directly in line with the inside horse used to be my favourite fishing spot but was a bit treacherous if the wind was coming from the south. Beautiful part of the world, Thanks Trevor.
Dan is not so happy. That is him leaning on the chevy and he is peeved that you did not fuzzy the number plate. His face was fuzzy enough but the number plate gave him away and his boss is now threatening to take him to court for the sick pay he claimed that day. The interest is going to be a killer thanks to Paul Keating's recession we had to have.
Thanks Kev, I was gettin' away with it till you brought it up!!
all jokes aside I had a work car about 12 years ago and the number plate was YBJ-781!!! you must be some kinda psycho Kev!! .
sorry mate I meant psychic but I couldn't rub it out "cos I lost my eraser and I haven't worked out how to use the white out yet!
You might want to start taking baths Dan
another ambushed thread
Great idea Toni & Kev, A thread all by itself that you can pay your respects to the departed, It's a very sad and touchy subject and should be treated with the uppermost respect.

Fettle defeating Gentleman John & Sibelia in a Harold Park 1000 pound invitation.
just wondering, how much would you have to pay to get into that meeting at wayville in 1947,i was only 1 year old then...
Those who are looking for information relating to horses, drivers etc from days gone by might be able to locate it at some of these websites where you can view copies of old papers online.
Trove - http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper - here you can search and view a variety of old newspapers from across Australia. The Canberra Times (up to 1995) and Melbourne Argus (to 1957) will give you plenty of stories and results, plus the fields for trots meetings. The search facility is quite good.
Melbourne Age - http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC - search function can be hit or miss so it is handy if you know dates! Some copies are missing, mainly Saturday issues but you can view them up to around 1989. Same with the Sydney Morning Herald - http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=lL5f5cZgq8MC
The Trove site is part of a government Newspaper Digitization Plan. Apparently it is quite expensive to make digital copies of old newspapers but local groups are doing small town newspapers bit by bit. I see they are shortly going to upload copies of the Melbourne Sporting Globe up to 1954, so this will mean access to plenty of material from the early era of the Melb Showgrounds.
