    Red face Looking after the Ladies

    Golden Girls Mares series The NZSBA is excited to announce a new nationwide racing series starting mid-May. The Golden Girls series is a joint venture between HRNZ and NZSBA to provide four-year-old and older mares increased opportunities to race and earn that all important black type, prior to the end of the season.

    This series will cater for 0 – 1 win with lifetime earnings of $10,000 and 2 – 4 win pacing mares with lifetime earnings of $40,000. Trotters will also be represented with a 0 – 1 win series with $10,000 lifetime earnings.

    The national series will provide 27 additional races this season for mares to compete against their own sex and $217,500 in combined stakes

    Our objectives for the series are:
    · increase the racing opportunities for four-year-old or older mares;
    · contributing to improving winter racing fields and racing opportunities;
    · provide opportunities for mares to earn 'black type' prior to the start of the breeding season; and
    · provide 'punters' with even-field racing to stimulate increased betting with our aim being to average in excess of 11 mares per race.From Harness Racing NZ.
    Someone's got some ideas.

    This is nothing new.
    It is in essence a copycat idea of..
    a.. Southern Belle Speed series run in Southland for probably 5-6 years now.
    b.. Greater Canterbury Mares Championship run for the first time earlier this season.
    Catering for trotting mares maybe new but again they have the Glenferrie Farm series run in Canterbury.
    Extra opportunities are good however

    I like the thinking behind The Matchmaker that Blue Chip sponsors at Yonkers in NY. It's a $1,000,000 total late closing Series with the winner & second place getter having their choice of a breeding to American Ideal, Rock N Roll Heaven, Shadow Play, Bettor's Delight, Roll With Joe or Art Major....with those breedings having to be used on the mares that finished 1st & 2nd in any one of the 3 years/seasons following the race. I think that we need to institute more of this sort of thing here in Oz and in NZ.

    Slightly off topic but nice to see Nicole Molander keeping her consistent stats rolling along with a double at Penrith tonight with 2 copybook drives on leaders at Penrith tonight. Now there is a lady who knows her horses back to front, rates them perfect and gets 'em home without spending a penny more than she has to.

    It is NEW teecee, it is the Golden Girls!!!
    Its a great concept especially at this time of the year and more chance to keep the mares racing each other. Well done to everyone involved.
