Josh Duggan, driver of Composed, was questioned regarding his decision to surrender the position outside of the leader to stablemate Smudge Bromac NZ at approximately the 800m. Mr Duggan advised he was mindful of the use he had already made of Composed when improving three wide from the 1700m and being without cover from the 1300m until ultimately obtaining the position outside the leader approaching the 1000m and being required at times to drive with vigour to gain the desired position. Mr Duggan further explained that he felt it would be detrimental to the chances of Composed to then make further use of the gelding to resist the challenge of Smudge Bromac NZ when that runner improved to his outside passing the 900m. Mr Duggan finally added he was further mindful that Composed was first up since 24 July 2015. Upon consideration of the matter Stewards were satisfied that the decision by Mr Duggan to allow Smudge Bromac NZ to improve ahead of Composed at such a late stage, in these particular circumstances, was not unreasonable given the use made of Composed up until that point and Composed being first up for 2 months. Stewards further mindful of the relatively fast sectional times recorded whilst Composed was improving three wide during the early and middle stages.
