Trotting in Melbourne has had a few different homes. The first base of the sport was at Elsternwick Park, on the corner of St Kilda Road and Hotham Street. After 10 years the lease was not renewed and the sport in the 1890's appeared at Croxton and Richmond, but was "red hot". In 1906 John Wren took over Richmond, Ascot and Croxton (Fitzroy) and he centered trotting at Richmond where a weekly meeting was held until it closed in 1932. The trots then went to Ascot, opposite the Showgrounds where they were quite popular until it was shut in 1942.
