He did indeed, the little winner. I'm going to hire a PR company next year - the Aus award apparently was voted on by the media instead of by merit - I've seen Lumineer mentioned far more times on Twitter than little Jack. Because it's a bigger industry there? More big trainers? Who knows.
I'll laugh if Poster Boy wins Vic 2yo Colt of the year and beats Lumineer though.
Look, I know it's unAustralian to be so sour grapes over stuff like this but we'll NEVER EVER EVER get a horse as good as him again, particularly as a hobby stable. Just want to milk all the achievement possible while it lasts and it sucks to get passed over.

Veteran horseman Neville Welsh has decided to retire after many years training and driving in Victoria
Neville Welsh: trained and drove over 6 decades.
The 2012 Gordon Rothacker Medallist, and Hall of Famer who has driven winners in every decade since 1953. Began his career driving trackwork for father Lew first at Beaufort, then Sydenham, and drove his first winner Sea Witch at Horsham, aged sixteen.
Neville trained from a base at Sydenham ( now Watergardens) and more recently from a property in Elmore.
His career highlights include the 1971 AG Hunter Cup: Son of Nancy and the 1974 National Drivers Invitation at the Melbourne Showgrounds on Truant Armagh. Most notable however were his record breaking premierships in 1970/71 and 1971/72 where he drove 81 and 84 winners for the season respectively.

Its not voted on by media alone. There are number of industry people who are invited to vote - not sure of the numbers or where they are located though.

Couldn't agree more Katie. My horses are like family, especially when you breed them , rear them , go to every race start and spell them . I can look out the window now and see Poster Boy and Our Little General enjoying their well earned break.
You can't help but become biased to your own but I thought Poster Boy should have been Aust 2 year old of the year . I am not on Twitter however the media can at times have a huge impact on a result.
The stats for Lumineer and Poster Boy are;
Lumineer. 5 starts 5 wins . 1.52.5 Group 1. Winner . $177,980
Poster Boy. 10 starts 7 wins 2 seconds . $178,000. Group 1 Winner . Group 2 Winner . 2nd in Group 1 Breeders Crown.
In a later post Carole did attempt to clarify the voting procedure. However , IMO it needs to be more open and transparent. Who does vote , what are there industry positions and do they have vested interests in the outcome? Why are faceless people making a decision that is important to many of us ?
I will be cheering for Poster Boy in the Victorian Awards and good luck with your boy Katie , we may meet in a 3 year race later in the season.

As someone emotionally removed from the situation I probably would have voted for Lumineer or Ignatius. So hard to separate the 2yos and there is no form across the states. Poster Boy, Jack Mac and Ignatius only won state based races (Yes Golden Slipper not state based but whos travelling) whereas the tiebreaker is Lumineer won a race open to multiple states. Ignatius a 2yo record time would be my next pick. Rock an ad hard place with minimal crossover form though - all very good 2yos.

UP AND RUNNING
The Trotting Annals of Bendigo and Environs, by the amazing John Peck, purchased by the Bendigo Library, are up and running.
Over 300 pages of searchable PDF, 15,500 or more race results from 1855 till 1954, 200 photos and great articles about the origins of both the Bendigo Jockey Club ( where the first trots were held) and the Sandhurst Trotting Club.
The research section of the Bendigo Library, has 2 computers dedicated to geneology. The Trottting Annals are on both of these computers. The search is easy to use, and the Research Staff are already familiar with the resource and ready to assist. So you can find anyone who raced, trained or owned horses around Bendigo during and after the gold-rush, the horses and the results.
It's an amazing resource, and another really good reason to come to Bendigo. The Library is open till 6 on weekdays, and till 3PM on Saturdays. They have great coffee too !

I just said to him 'what have you done'
Got to love this from the Melton APG fillies heats. From Blake Redden, thetrots.com.au
There are a number of moments a trainer will never forget as their career unfolds and we saw one of those at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night.
Kate Hargreaves and Alex Ashwood produced the lightly raced filly Ideally Say Yes to take out a heat of the rich Australian Pacing Gold series in what was a tough win from the breeze.
It wasn't Hargreaves first win at Victorian HQ but it will be just as memorable as claiming the first race on Del-Re National A. G. Hunter Cup night last year.
The filly arrived in her heat at just her fourth start but now she heads to Sydney to take on the best fillies available in the $350,000 Group 1 final on April 28.
"We went up to the yearling sales to buy a horse and we went through the process and picked out a few we liked and we had planned on syndicating the one we bought but it didn't work out and all of the horses we had our eye on went for too much money," Hargreaves said.
"I was ready to head home, a bit disappointed we hadn't been able to purchase anything and I heard in the sale ring a filly went for $8000 and I looked around to see where Alex (Ashwood, partner) was so we could leave and he had bid on this filly.
"He thought he had brought a colt at the time but it ended up being this girl and we got her home and she didn't have the best legs and I just said to him 'what have you done'.
"We were really lucky that a few people like Shannon and Paul Nixon were willing to buy in to help us out and a few of my friends from work purchased their first share in a horse, so it's pretty exciting for everyone."
All the best to Kate and Alex with their trip to Sydney.

Thank you for your congratulations re the recent Breeders Crown Heats and Semi's successes. Rocknroll Icon and Form Analyst are both in the paddock so these are the only 4 we have left in work. They did us proud , however the Finals will all be tough ,just hoping for no bad luck. As for breeding insights , I tend to do my own thing. Probably do it in reverse to some , if I like a stallion I try and find a mare to match up with him. Because of the American mares I follow the breeding trends in the USA and have a lot of time for the Direct Scooter line ; a great source of speed and has worked so well down here. Doubling up on DS and his sons is something I look to do . Pedigree is a part of the puzzle but temperament and physical attributes are part of the package. I also place a lot of importance on the Mares ; they only have ONE foal a year compared to some stallions who have 100+and their value cannot be underestimated. I like strong Dam Sire lines , the more Group winners and Sires in a family the better. The Internet has opened up a whole new world for Breeders to do their own research. Many years ago we imported a couple of Australian mares who had raced very successfully in the USA but we had very little luck breeding from them . I love old Posh Jaccka dearly ( she's 24 ) and has a home for life but I would"t bother with mares that have had a hard racing life again. There are always exceptions to every rule and breeding horses is a very personal experience as everyone has an opinion and an experience to share.
Nutrition and care of the mare and foal is also paramount and we are fortunate to have our own farm where they can be treated as individuals and brought in for extra attention if required.

Thanks Anne and it seems as though you have a holistic method that works.
Yes, many of us probably place alot of emphasis on pedigree far ahead of factors.
Your view re hard raced mares is interesting and something shared by other breeders.
Could environment (nutrition etc. ) potentially help explain why NZ bred horses are generally better than Au bred?? i.e. high fertile / volcanic soil ?
Thanks again and all the best in the finals.

VICTORIANS Chris Alford and Emma Stewart closed-out the 2017/18 season with record-smashing results.
Alford obliterated the previous Australian driving record of 388 wins in a season with a staggering 457 victories. They came at a powerhouse 27.92 per cent strike rate.
Alford’s dominance was underlined by the fact Greg Sugars finished second with 229 winners.
Stewart, who unofficially trains in partnership with Clayton Tonkin, also bettered Grant Dixon’s 299 Australian record with 308 wins. Her strike rate was out of this world at 39.09 per cent and would’ve been far higher if you eliminated the number of times she beat her own horses.

Hi All
Just to clarify, Craig Rail is not 'retiring' but moving to New Zealand to spend more time with his son Benjamin. Unfortunately Craig's partner and son returned to NZ some time ago.
Craig is very hopeful to find work in race calling over there but its a pretty closed shop with very limited opportunities.
Hopefully, we have not heard the last of Craig's fabulous race calling and wish him all the best.
I'm positive Luke will be a very able replacement !!

One of Dot's has posted her first win in R2 at Bendigo tonight
Can her 2yo colt make it a double when he debuts in R9
I wasn't sure why the form analysis said he was well bred until I spotted his 4th dam Romola Hanover
Her descendants include Art Major (the colt's sire) and Captaintreacherous just to name a couple
Open all the + boxes in the following link
http://classicfamilies.net/CF/Descendants.aspx?HorseID=10016918
Mind you the colt's 3rd dam Romette Hanover does not feature there (yet - says Dot ;))

thanks Kev, the little bugger has had her problems but that was a welcome result for all concerned including her breeders Mark and Trish. Bloody ridiculous odds, if she had drawn the one instead of the five I would have declared her a near certainty, she had a lot of work to do to get into the race but handled it like a horse that should have been odds on if from the ideal draw.
Great result!!

Bad news about Gerry Giraffe Big K
http://www.harness.org.au/media-room/news-article/?news_id=43212
It is alleged that, under the direction of his father Gregory Burns, Tyson Burns removed the brand of ‘Gerry Giraffe’ following its death to conceal its identity.

Thanks Kev and Noel. We're still smiling, we even smile if we win a trial these days.
I wonder, with little thought, is there a place for some type of regional racing when we've beaten covid? I don't know, like a speciality round the footy have. Or if a couple of races on a country cups program might be limited to locals/region.
Prior to covid, no matter where you went people would say it's good to see a local win. May help participation rates as much as anything else.

A total of seven races were conducted, with the fastest mile rate recorded being 2:9.80 and prizemoney ranging between 75 and 100 pounds.
Another highlight was a record 103 pounds winning dividend paid on James Dillon in the main event. These were odds of 412/1 for two lucky 5 shilling tickets.
All the great ones..owners, trainers, drivers, and horses have competed in the estimated 11,000 plus races from Gentleman John, Richmoond Lass, Perfect Hanover, Gosh, Paleface Adios, Gammalite, Raiarmagh Pool, Popular Alm, Maoris idol, Scotch Notch, Royal Gaze, Mr Feelgood, Smoken Up...and of course the local hero Adaptor

Hi Gentlemen, it certainly puts a spring in your step when you breed/own or race a winner!!..I sold Regal Aura at last years yearling sales and the guy bought him only because his earlier buy failed a vet check. Of course nobody wanted him in the ring cause P Forty Seven's are no good!!..but this guy has shown ability in his few starts and it was great to see him win!!..I was screaming the roof off my house trying to get the other boy over the line..but he has this hitchy gate thing and if he could have stopped hopping and skipping he would have most probably won.. I backed Regal Aura who payed around $26 for the win from memory..small amount for the win and 20 places @$4.20 ...only a couple of wins on pp and 10 places!!..it's so exciting when they do well!!..

Thanks Kevin, she was back to her best last night after a slightly disappointing first up 3rd.
David is trying to have her fit for the Vicbred and Breeders, not an easy job as we are not sure when they will be ! There have been no 3yo races for her class so she has to race against open age horses.
I finally has a nice horse but due to the virus situation there are no big money races around !

Yes Kevin have made a nice profit on Forever and a day via punting on him. He has won several times at 20/1 +.
Considering I sold him for $1500 a few years back I still have a long way to break even as far as breeding and training fees go.
I knew he would win plenty of races if you could stop him hitting his knees, turned out that removing the hopples made the most difference . If you watch that last race you could see he was still hitting them pretty bad. You can see his head bobbing up and down when he hits them hard, seemed worse than usual in that run.

Both horses sat in the death and both owned by the family

Thank you .Very happy with Honolua Bay tonight. Always had ability but was injury prone as a youngster. We did a 12 month rehab program at home with him and because he went through his grades quickly he lacks racing experience. There were a few worrying days with Harley but his results on Friday showed a marked improvement . He is still under veterinary care but we are feeling more confident about a good outcome.

Good to hear Anne and I love Josh's interview before his Honolua drive - pointing out that the horse is being taken along patiently to ensure he is a 4yo, 5yo, 6yo .... performer

Congratulations to young Luke Humphreys for being appointed to the HRV calling team
He could not have done it without dad (our Toohard)
The story is in today's Herald Sun
Also wishing Craig Rail a happy retirement after many years of fantastic service to the industry

Congratulations Rick on Final Peace's win in the last at Horsham today
Looked her race to me - Regardless of placing she was breaking $100k (the two favoured runners have a long way to get there)
Even had a tenner on her myself

Thanks Kevin, she has been suffering from bad draws and a virus, hopefully she can win one at Melton soon.
Also the first 100k winner that I have bred so I'm pretty happy, her dam fell just a few k short of it.

We miss our old posters. Where do people talk harness nowadays?
Our numbers have dwindled - especially posters, the Australian Harness Racing Industry Group on facebook only tick along at about the same rate as us
People must talk harness somewhere
