Halls used to have Tanaka Eagle. It's grown a leg with the new trainer. Good on him!
And Mouse's field was tough. Not sure too many picked him but he's going a treat. So good to see him win. Did you see Assassinator get away from the stand? Never seen anything like it!!

Why would Vic's leading stable be picking off $7800 races? (and of course the $20k Cup) I imagine it did however constitute a big event. Did you go Pat?

Yes I did go Kev and thanks for bringing that up, I was ...... off about that approach to the racing at launceston from "the big end of town". I didn't want to appear to be a whinger regarding this issue especially as they had Major Secret come down and take out the cup winning by 21 metres, starting at $1.10 and beating a couple of old ex Victorian claimers. This does nothing for the local competition in my opinion and the harness industry is struggling down here.
I dont know one person who went to watch Major Secret race. I was extremely tempted to approach the 2 legends and tell them to piss off back to the 10 race meetings a week in Victoria and across the border in NSW. But we do see this happen time and time again from Albany to Burnie and the end result is the forcing out the smaller trainer and owners. Tasmania did have a local resident rule either 3 months or 3 starts for a few races at one stage but I have not seen it applied this year. I don't know what the answer is but walking through the stables and looking at local owners and trainers, the disappointment was palpable.

St Arnaud is an excellent viewing track. I have stopped in before but this is my first race day here. A small track with a raised club room and stand, parking on the fence the entire span of the bottom bend and even a lookout in the back straight for another vantage point. A nice green footy ground inside the perimeter also adds to the aesthetics.
If it wasn't for the lack of camber on the bends I could imagine a lot more meets here - I don't know whether the football club would agree to cambering the bottom bend but I can't see how doing the top bend would worry anyone
New year's eve is no doubt a busy Sky day but near on 40 min between races is too long if you are not punting or with a party of people
Lucky to strike such a cracker of a day but I would certainly recommend St A to everybody

I attended Carrick speedway (near Launceston) yesterday..a twilight meeting. No camber on the bends there either and only has about 6 races a year, a good sized track. The racing was competitive although a 4 goal breeze was hanging around. The crowd was good, plenty of food, some music and a good atmosphere. A lot of small time punters as well. Free entry and you can also wander around and have a look in the horse stabling area. Had to smile at the back-up mobile gate which was attached to an old statesman in "reasonable" condition. A great day.

Hi Kevin and Pat,
I thought I would add to this positive thread with a comment on some of Victoria's small clubs that I've attended in the last 12 months. In particular, I had a great time at the Birchip and Wangarratta Cups which were both very well attended. These tracks and many others add so much to our sport, with a great family friendly atmosphere, BBQs, vanilla slices, kids attractions, and up-close racing action, etc., etc..
Cheers, David

Some lights went out, unable to be repaired in time
From Shepparton HRC
Huge disappointment for all at Shepparton tonight when an electrical fault brought the Neatline Homes Shepparton Gold Cup meeting to an abrupt halt. That fault resulted in one of the light poles catching fire.
Stewards had no option other than to abandon the meeting when the electrical contractors advised the issue would take a minimum 2 hours to repair with no guarantee of a good outcome.
The club appreciates the understanding from industry participants and those who were in attendance.

Trivia(l) questions.
Went to Wedderburn Cup yesterday. Told it the 2nd oldest (continuous) trotting club in Australia. Hot and humid but great day out. Being one who loves talking to people who've been about longer than me and wandering old racetracks, I liked the collection of pics on the wall.
So here's some trivia questions... (Noel Ridge will know all the answers already).. Google may help with 1....
1. Wedderburn the 2nd oldest trotting club in Australia was told yesterday. Which club is Australia's oldest continuous trotting club?
2. Gyressa won the Wedderburn Cup in 1978 as per pic. Kev mentioned her in a post in 2014 on here re Bettor Downunder. What is her other 'Claim to Fame' ?
3. Who is the gentleman (was a Wedderburn resident) in the other picture?

Hi Paul
The man in the hat with the ever present roll your own in the corner of his mouth is Korong Vale's own Jack Hargreaves.
Trainer driver of Coneeda, Faye Maree, Alverly, Val Curl, Dashing McTavish and the mighty Miracle Mile (See pic below) , Bendigo Cup winner and USA winner, Adaptor.
Jack was also a great supporter (and critic) of the now extinct Korong Vale Football Club.
Training couldn't start until Jack had positioned his ute, complete with the necessary refreshments close to the fence beside the footy clubrooms.
He was from there able to pass on his wisdom and opinions to the coach (me) , before and during, and even after training.
Jack was terribly injured in a race fall at Nyah, but after a long period in hospital and rehab in Melbourne taught himself to walk with the assistance of his horse walking machine, and communicate with the aid of his note-pad. He moved to Wedderburn and lived overlooking the track where he could "supervise others training " from his wheel chair..either sitting or standing.

Hi Noel,
Coneeda, second in the 1967 Interdominion final to Binshaw when trained by Joe Petricevich and driven by Fred Kersley jnr, I presume it is the same horse.
It is Rod. Coneeda ( Convivial- Austin Lass by New Derby).
Greg Hargreaves, the track vet at many country Victorian venues relates that Jack and Ken (Greg's father) took 6yo Coneeda and his 7 yo "aunt" Faye Maree to Adelaide for the 1963 Interdominions. at Wayville.
Not bad for a country railway worker, and a farmer.
Neither made the final won by Cardigan Bay, but I think Coneeda was placed in the consolation.
Coneeda was purchased by WA interests and went on to race in Perth, and finish second to Binshaw 1967 Inter Dominion ( as a 10yo) , and then was sold to the USA.

Yes Kev it sure does. We are getting all your heat here with temps in the mid to high 30;s The coldest part of NZ at the bottom of the south is getting continual 30 plus days an Aussie humidity nights. Not what we are used to. Even the West Coast of the south island is this year in an official drought. The wettest, greenest place over here.
If you see green anywhere here at the moment it's probably a dairy farm with 24/7 irrigators.

No doubt Waikiki Beach the far superior horse with the far superior record. However had Hollywood Sign stayed in Australia who is to say he wouldn't have been in the M1 on 14/01/17 that Waikiki Beach ran 3rd in. Or even in a weirder anomaly Hollywood Sign may have won an extra one or two Metrop races so could have even hypothetically lined up in the higher class race than Waikiki Beach that night! Despite the massive difference in prizemoney and ability it was possible they could have been in the same race!

There was another great story at Terang Cup on Saturday night.
Archduke Joseph was an 84 start maiden prior to Saturday night. Driven perfectly by Michael Bellman, he ran the field off their legs to win by 25.8 metres!
The crowd really appreciated the win and he got a rousing reception coming back to scale

Does anybody know whether this all due to the Vintage Motorbikes event held on this long weekend?

Great to see 40 Saturday night meetings scheduled for Melton 2018/19 season. Commonsense prevails. It is a nightmare driving to Melton from the northeastern suburbs peak hour Friday night. Saturday night is the night to showcase the sport. It allows us all to get to Melton easily no matter where in the state you might live. Good job David Martin.

Thanks David. That's been the constant feedback over the last 12 months regarding Melton and the need to have Saturday night there as our feature night. The chopping and changing of Fridays/Saturdays at Melton isn't helpful.

I believe I read/heard somewhere that the club has put the savings into top up of other races across the season. Not sure where similar savings made over recent years at two other major tracks went.
Several of these races run with less than eight starters this year. Aside from swallowing pride and returning these events to handicap conditions I hope something can be done for next season. Clubs dip into their own funds to help put these stakes on and deserve better than worrying if they are even going to get a field for their major race.

Off the back of today’s announcement ($1M government funding), Harness Racing Victoria’s CEO David Martin confirmed that between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019, HRV would waive the registration fee for Victorian-bred foals from a Victorian mare and a Victorian standing stallion. During this same period, HRV will also reduce registration fees for foals from a Victorian mare by an interstate or overseas stallion.

Why are drivers restricted to the set drivers fee? Are some drivers who shall remain nameless really worth the same fee as G Lang, N Jack and C Alford? Should they be allowed to put a higher figure for their services? Could also lead to concession drivers getting more experience if they are deemed more value for money. Just a thought.

Why do they get a set fee at all?
In the USA there is no basic fee paid to drivers.
How do USA harness drivers get paid?
Answer: Drivers get paid by commission—5 percent based on how much of the purse they win. If the purse is $20,000, the winning horse gets $10,000, and the winning driver gets $500. Purses are paid out at a percentage of 50-25-12-8-5, and drivers get 5 percent of those amounts. If, however, the horse earns no purse (finishes worse than fifth), the driver may get no money for his or her drive, although some jurisdictions do mandate the driver be paid at least $20 or $25. And, of course, the top often get additional compensation from the owner for winning the big races.

Pretty sure the top shelf put a premium on their services that comes in differing forms, don't get me started on concession drivers Brendan, the longevity of the concession these days is an absolute farce. We have a couple of decent young fellas here that have driven over 100 winners and still get a concession, so as you would expect they are getting first chop at a lot of drives at each meeting while there is another 5 or 6 good young fellas that haven't had the same opportunities lucky to get a drive or two.
Danno's humble opinion is the whole thing needs a bloody good review under a decent microscope, too many young people being denied opportunities that are going to their brethren that really don't need it in the way it was originally devised.

Not really in my range of knowledge but a very good subject Breno, I’m thinking that Driver concessions should be structured along the lines of Apprentice Jockey concessions and after set amount of wins(say between 75 & 100) the concessions should cease, Maybe 75 would be a fair number so the younger brigade gets a fair shake and a bit of encouragement.

I can't say that I always look at the Race conditions too closely and wondered if the following is something new and whether it is a common condition
* Restricted to trainers who trained no more than 25 winners in the 2016 / 2017 racing season.
I presume Kev it is related to this:
"There will be a total of 724 races programmed in May and June, of which 110 will be $5000 races with the $1000 bonus. Of these 110 $5000 races, three will be restricted to trainers who trained no more than two winners in the 2016/2017 racing season, and a further 44 will be restricted to trainers who trained no more than 25 winners in the 2016/17 racing season. For these (44+3) races, a trainer must have lodged a valid stable return at least one month prior to acceptance time for each race. The remaining 63 races at the $5000 stakemoney level and the other 614 races programmed in May and June 2018 will not have restrictions based on the number of winners in the 2016/17 racing season"

Coming in late here Dan but I was sent this
HRNSW provides for the following:
- A driver may claim a concession for (the term) five years from attainment of an initial B Grade Drivers Licence or the driver reaches the age of 23, whichever is the latter. (The term will end at the conclusion of the racing season with respect to each of the above scenarios.)
- A driver may claim a concession until he/she has driven 250 winners.
- Drivers who have not driven 50 winners during "the Term" may apply for an extension. Should a driver not win 50 races during the Term then they will receive a two year Term Extension.
The Term Extension will end upon whichever of the following occurs first: a) a driver wins the 50th race of their career b) at the conclusion of the 2nd racing season of the Term Extension
A 4th and 5th year seems very generous for some who have started driving 100 winners by their 3rd year

RWWA trialing increased gate speed at despatch point to test for a reduction in gallopers in the score up and after the start.
http://www.harness.org.au/media-room/news-article/?news_id=37483
Curious does anyone know what the despatch speed is in other states, and if this should be uniform or adjusted for the track? Whilst a reduction in gallopers is obviously highly desirable I am thinking the increased speed would also see an increasing advantage to being drawn an inside gate, and if the data obtained will/should also be analysed for this.

The time between races tonight is
29min 26 28 26 30 30
I know this is only really relevant to those attending but there are some meets nowadays where you could add 10 minutes to those gaps thus elongating the meet by an hour

An 11yo and a 10yo scored a running double at Maryborough today
11yo Life Long Voyage has been just that for the Drechslers recording his 5th win in his 172nd start. The Drechslers patience was evident from the get go as it took LLV 66 starts to record his first win
10yo Leakys Smokin was having only his 48th start today as he was a late starter and he has the impressive record of 48-9-6-5

First meet of the season at Melton tonight - very numerical
10 races
4 winners Gavin Lang
3 winners Kate Gath
2 winners Chris Alford
1 winner David Murphy
I've been looking out for this for a while and finally it happened, albeit with a small field.
Horses in Race 6 at GP finished in starting odds order. $1.30 - $5.30 - $8.00 - $21.20 - $30.40 - $49.70

I was looking at Custom Number Plates and saw that there is a VIC Harness Racing option.
Unfortunately it is maybe the worst custom plate I have seen
It is almost impossible to see the harness horse.
A smaller pic between the number and letters would have worked much better and maybe black on white

While on the Number Plates - I discovered that you cannot have the plate PINTO in Victoria as it is considered 'inappropriate' - apparently they check the Urban dictionary which has some whacko meanings for pinto, not one of them being a horse.
I wonder what they would make of 3yo first starter 'All Whitey Then' at Horsham tomorrow
The grey will probably be all white one day - his dam is Wrong Comment and her dam was Racist

A really wonderful horse. A life well lived old fella. Thanks for the memories.
First ever TAB monte at Alexandra Park last night. 2nd highest turnover of the night and according to one regular attendee the most engaged the crowd had been all year apart from the race with Chicago Bull
NB perhaps should be in SSS thread. The Bulls race was a Standing Start. For the long term benefit of the industry we need to ensure Trans Tasman Rivalry continues, and part of that is standing starts.

Horses really do break your heart. Our best boy Jack Mac broke his peddle bone in a race Friday at GP, just one week out from the $200k Golden Nugget. We will never ever ever get another like him. No matter the breeding. No matter the buying. He was our only one.
You really do just question everything in times like this. Do you just abuse your horses and squeeze every cent out of them regardless of risk of injuries, or be kind and careful resting them at the first sign of a sniffle and they still get serious injuries?!?

Commiserations Katie. I hope he recovers fully and continues in the same vain when he gets back.
So sorry to read that Katie, it was hard not to fear the worst when he dipped at the 250m, so brave to finish the race as he did. And that bravery should stand him in good stead for his recovery.
It feels now like there will never be another Jack Mac for the family Katie, but that’s something that can never be said for certain. That’s why we all breed or buy or get up in the mornings to work horses because we never know when that good one is around the corner.
We should always do best by our horses but sometimes it isn’t enough and comes to nought be that on the track, losing a mare and/or foal during our efforts to breed, or sometimes just to the vagaries of nature when a horse is injured in the paddock or stable without apparent explanation.

Feeling your pain Katie, truly tough luck.
Pretty well the reason I am no longer active in the game; a string of heartbreak with good horses breaking down. And worse.
I tried an alternative sport for a while, lighting a fire in an old fuel drum and feeding it $50 notes. Cost about the same as the horses but without the thrill. So I've still got a few old horses and the local vets reckon I am a great bloke.
Hopefully, time (and luck) will fix Jack.

There are 10 Vic racing free Mondays over summer. A quick glance and it appears this might be the only time HRV don't have a day meeting.
Isn’t this one a “trots” one for France, so needs to be a night meeting for their scheduling?
Not enough horses perhaps for both I guess Kev, though perhaps a little forethought could have seen Friday’s Yarra Glen meeting transferred to today. The HRA conference was billed as an opportunity for participants to have their say, which was always going to be very difficult for many local participants to attend with a day meeting and a night meeting on Friday.
Does anyone know if the presentations were videoed for dissemination amongst those who couldn’t t attend?

BUT at least we are not as ridiculous as the gallops. I was checking where they were racing this week and I come across

I now know that it happened a couple of months back but for those who do not know - you are supposed to know or work out for yourself that it is Werribee
Bloody Ridiculous
While I am having a crack at the gallopers. I could not believe that strappers were on their iphones while solely responsible for 500kg of horse flesh in the mounting yard.
I would not have believed it if I had not seen it with my own eyes at Ararat's last meet.
I had to laugh that one horse who had to settle for 2nd because of his wayward antics in the home straight, was proving difficult for the strapper to get out of the 2nd placegetters stall - might have had something to do with her only having one hand free as she was glued to her phone in the other hand. People are fine to use their phone while leading.... until a horse breaks away, goes through a fence, breaks a leg and they're asked what happened.
Weve had to implement a mobile ban at home and even then its constant reminders to get off your phone!

Order does not matter in Quinellas fellas :D

Would have to say Wayne that I find this comment from you somewhat ironic. Am not condoning for a millisecond the actions of the spectator at Gloucester Park last night, and not only here from you have I read calls that he be banned from race courses for life and charged by police. I’ve read he should be imprisoned, beaten, tied to the track and run over by the field and an assorted array of track vehicles also, as his actions could have endangered the lives of our horses and drivers. No doubt they could have, but equally or moreso endangering the lives of our horses and drivers are the actions of drivers who cause interference in a race, in some instances deliberately driving into another horse in a race and we only suspend them from driving, usually only for a matter of weeks.

It may well be beyond my comprehension that me saying As for penalties going forward, if it's with intent, as long as driver status is irrelevant and a changed policy is clear, make it 6 months is indicative of me not having any concern for life or limb of driver or horse? And/or I should have made this clearer, in me supporting relegation the risk to driver and horse will be minimised significantly.
Might just be me.

I can just picture him marvelling at finding a No Race due to a Lap Long
Thanks Kev.
Amazing what you find ... and they raced ( a lot) at Colac.

Fast forward a few decades and the same thing happened again...listen to the caller counting down the laps

Kyle would be very happy with local trainers winning 5 of the 8 races on Warragul Cup day

Yankee Lincoln verses Concealment in the 1st heat of the EK Bray at Bendigo tonight, should be a good battle if they are both keen to win (not just qualify)

I loved the good odds in Races 3 - 9 at Cranbourne tonight
A hypothetical $1 all up would have mathematically netted you over $29million
(Apologies but I just watched Let It Ride yesterday)

Terang race 3 last night (30/4) a horse fell just after crossing the line, in the replay it is edited out ! Why ? Is it HRV policy to not show falls, do they want the public to think they never happen ?

Watchmylips at Launceston couldn't find a less agressive drive if you tried. Yes baby 2yos but is there feature races coming up where it might be handy to have Kadar drawn badly as well under PBD conditions?
