I feel a bit sad
I was reading a harness forum on a Footy board of all places
and a poster pointed out a shocking/suss drive from Kate Gath for which she was suspended nearly a year ago (Jan 20)
I wouldn't have thought it

Interesting to watch, then read the stewards report. She copped 4 weeks for an "unacceptable drive". Horse drove like a pig, she drove like it was dead and stopped driving it altogether when it looked a winning chance.

Certainly no magnum of Champagne for drive of the day!

Annoying when HRV cannot get Replays up within a reasonable time
R9 has been run at Maryborough but still no replays up for any race
(lucky we have Sky and other options BUT we shouldn't have to stuff around with alternatives)

I guess some horses just thrive on racing. Jaziah had 24 starts as a 2yo in 11mths of racing without a spell, all for Peter Manning bar 4 for owner Rhonda Aldons in Qld. One break of 5wks and another of 6wks between races was all she ever got

And still no spell, she has raced twice now as a 3yo and won in 1.54.9 at Hamilton today. Maybe they are not planning a long career for her but rather a couple of seasons then off to the breeding barn? Her breeding is from Royalty - literally that is as her 2nd dam is named Royalty :D

They cannot have a racing person entering the results for Melton or else they would have realized you can't have multiple Odds On pops in a race like they have entered for R5 and R6
(They have entered the starting Place odds instead of the Win odds)

Like the Stewart and Tonkin new colours, Kima Frenning's colours also look like a Carlton track suit top.
I am a Blues Boy but as far as racing colours go
I am expecting something more modern like bright fluro colours easy to identify from a distance instead of these retro football styles

I'm confused as to how old J-Bon is
His Herald Sun form guide pic looks like the license photo of an 18yo
While in his R2 analysis he references Allen Jakovich who was a decent AFL player for a couple of years only - about 30 years ago!

$3.60 for the Early Quaddie at Melton tonight
That is as skinny a quaddie as I can remember

http://www.harness.org.au/racing/fields/race-fields/?mc=MX130221

Races 1-4

I wish it had NOT caught my attention. I thought I remembered a $5 quaddie at Shep back in the 70's which included Jolie Hanover and obviously 3 other standout horses (and I thought was probably a Saturday night meet). Not as short I know but I remember (or I think I do) having it 20 times. I have been searching the Year Books, it is approaching midnight - it can wait until tomorrow. Back in those days that was probably the payout for 50c

I reckon they should only count the last 3 legs as with only a field of 7 in the first leg, 3 drivers miss out.

Free admittance as per normal and an especially good race book for the Drivers Championship was even free
Construction doubling the size of the Tabaret is coming along nicely
There would be around 50 ladies at the luncheon
The pony trots between races 1-3 were very much appreciated to fill the space between those races
With up to 41 minutes between races and no stables or warm up yard accessible to the public the time would have dragged if not for the kiosk and the weather being conducive to lazing around

The timing of the APG heats in WA across all ages was ridiculous. We had the choice of running Star Of Diamonds in a $22k city race on the friday or the $10k heat on a tuesday (when there was a group 3 the next friday), and then 2 weeks later contest a $50k Group 2 or the $51k APG WA final against the boys.
We have a 3yo filly who missed the heat because of the timing of other more important races but the 3yo final isn't for weeks. It's like they squeezed the heats and finals in wherever they could fit without considering the existing programming and what races trainers would go for. I'm mad about it.
None of our horses are going to be sent east for the final even if they could win it - in fact I think Michael Brennan's 2 horses are the only WA horses that will so really the whole "buy an APG horse and race for hundreds of thousands" is a farce.

From the USTA website, further proof of how dependent US Harness is on 'other' forms of income:

the Florida Senate approved a measure Tuesday (May 18) that would allow racetracks and other gaming sites to host some other forms of gambling, effectively ending harness racing in the State of Florida
...... is pitting parts of the horse industry against other parts
......lawmakers had indicated an interest in also nixing the proposed decoupling of harness racing from casino operations

http://ustrottingnews.com/florida-house-committee-amends-gambling-bill-to-preserve-standardbred-business/

Imagine having (had?) such protections

The above was about the senate while harnesslink news reports:

reports that the Florida House committee amended the gambling bill to preserve standardbred horse business.

The House gaming bill would not decouple harness racing from gaming rooms.
Florida’s standardbred horse breeding business was thrown a lifeline Tuesday (May 18) when a House committee amended the gambling “decoupling” bill to require that Florida’s only harness racing track continue racing in order to keep its game room open.

The amendment adopted Tuesday by the House Select Committee on Gaming diverges HB 7A from its Senate counterpart.

It's a trend I've noticed more and more over here in WA. I barely recall a single meeting being cancelled 10 years ago. It's a constant thing these days. Either the weather is 4 times as bad as it was or track curation is a lost art. I feel like it's a conspiracy for harness racing to glean less revenue, thus nailing our coffin but they wouldn't do that would they?

Many people know the peterprofit website with Archie's thoughts on all things racing. I sometimes reference him but his criticism of Greg Sugars drive on Borntoboom last night was very unfair and incorrect. For a start, "holding the lead from the pole would have been easy", was not a possibility as the horse went very roughly and I don't think there was ever a point when I would have wanted my money on him. He stayed in for the sprint lane but couldn't even get 2nd ahead of the horse that was in the death for the last lap

Winner tonight at Terang, I Am A Wingate, is rather uniquely bred
He is the only starter of his sire I Am The Way (1995) and as I Am The Way only had one season (2011/12) with 5 services for 3 foals and with I Am A Wingate an 8yo and the other 2 foals not named, I think it is pretty safe to say that he will be his only ever starter.
I Am The Way NZ had 175 starts (all but 2 in Australia) finishing in 2006 so it was pretty unusual to see him tried as a sire so much later, especially as he never won a metro race and was not regally bred

The name Alilthundadownunda caught my eye in the title of a story on the USTA website
and set me wondering what an American horse is doing with that name

It turns out that he is a homebred whose sire is ex NZer Malak Uswaad who won $95k in NZ as a consistent performer at 2, 3 & 4 before going to the US where he took his earning to $566k
He is a Bettors Delight and his dam side hails from the renowned Black Watch line
Interestingly although Malak Uswaad is a NZ bred his dam was US bred and although they must have been humble races HRNZ shows her as having won 5 from 5 over in the US for stakes of $17,550

3yo Alilbitofthundadownunda is 20/1 to win the $300,000 Carl Milstein Memorial Invitational for 3yo's at MGM Northfield Park on Saturday. Favourite is Charlie May, who you might remember was unlucky to be disqualified in the Meadowlands pace last month
Unfortunately Malak Uswaad died shortly after the mating or else he may have become a frequent visitor to the home breeding barn

Smooth Deal was the top priced yearling of his year, $240,000. He was looking a bargain early when he slaughtered the opposition in the Young Guns. Then the wheels fell off. After several disappointing performances, interrupted by various veterinary procedures, he was sold to Victoria where his form has been hot and cold. Yesterday's run was much better but if he was anything near his 2yo best he would have motored straight past the winner. Hope he is coming back because he was certainly an exciting youngster.

This is partly why I cannot be bothered going to Maryborough today (a 1½hr drive I enjoy)

PeterProfit is suggesting that Joe Conolly 'has something' whether that be training nouse or something else and he bases this on the way he improves older horses but let's be fair and analyse their form previous to Joe getting them

Silly Sid - no surprise he won in 1.56.2, as then 7yo, he was having only his 6th start (has still only had 11) and a year before that win he had run 1.56.1 in a trial
Fortunate Son - PP is only complaining about Joe making him consistent - give the man a break
Schouten Island - he cites the 1.53.0 win in July but 2yrs before that he had run 1.53.2 when 3rd at Albion Park
Mister Magic Man - PP marvels at him winning in 1.51.4 saying he had never won in faster than 1.56.6 BUT 2yrs before he had run 1.53.2 when he drew badly and had a hard run before finishing 7th, so we are not talking miracles
Art Tutor - as a 6yo has gone pretty close to 1.50 when beaten by Muscle Factory last November BUT this is a horse that as a 2yo having his second start back in 2017 rated 1.56 when finishing 7th, it is not mind boggling to think that 4yrs later he could be capable of about 6 seconds improvement on a faster track over a shorter distance

There be a lot more variables than 'times' in trots as you know Kev. Barrier positions, different tracks, race tempo, where they are in the run.... heaps more.

Eg...

Horse can go 29, 29, 29, 29 = 1.56
But can't go 30, 30, 28, 28 = 1.56

29 as quick as they can go.

When race is run per 1 they'll be competitive. When run per 2 they won't.... be beaten bout 20m+ in fact. Same time but competitive in one and not the other? So comparing times like that a fruitless exercise?

No, I'll keep my 25 grand for a yearling. Unless they are using an alarm clock for timing races at Menangle this horse's form runs in the opposite direction to laws of nature.

On this 13th anniversary of the Black Saturday fires, the town and track look magnificent at Yarra Glen. It really is a beautiful track/vista. The track is already set up up with dozens of marquee for a party day/gallops meet on Saturday - I am pretty jealous

The Yarra Valley certainly is the complete opposite of what it was this time thirteen years ago Kev. That day was 1939 revisited but with even more dire consequences. By coincidence I had applied for a job covering all of Victoria but based out of Healesville. I emailed my application just after seeing the huge plume of smoke when the Strzeleckis ignited. A phone call on Monday to arrange an interview in Melbourne the following morning and then a job offer on the Wednesday saw me meeting my new employers at Tullamarine Airport early on the Friday and on the job in Healesville by mid morning.

The fires were still burning around Healesville for another three weeks. Yarra Glen's surrounding areas were badly damaged including many vineyards between the two towns. My boss would ring me daily to ensure my safety. I'd tell him as long as I could look out the window and see the Mt St Leonard fire tower all was well, if it wasn't then I was out of there!

But the Yarra Valley Racing Centre is one of the best there is. The track is terrific and the grandstand facilities, all air-conditioned behind glass make for an enjoyable day out. It seems many trots participants remain unaware that the extension of the Eastern Freeway via the Mullum Mullum Tunnels halves the travel time to Yarra Glen. This venue deserves more support and, undoubtedly, is Victoria's most picturesque track.

I choose to think of it as the luckiest day of my life, we lost our house, 2 cars, everything BUT my wife and 18yo daughter who were forced to take refuge in someone else's home when their escape route was cut off, survived the front and helped save the house that saved them. I know how long those fires burnt, I got back to the Valley before 10pm but did not get them off the Hill (Christmas) until about midnight.
Today my thoughts were with the many, many who lost family such as the 11 on Steels Creek Rd below us

It sure puts a different perspective on the word "lucky" Kev. I woke up at 6:00 AM the next morning to find Marysville was gone, went into Traralgon and saw dozens of people I knew from the Traralgon South area who had lost everything and learnt of others who had perished. Everywhere I went in the next year I met so many more people with the same story, many of whom just needed somebody to talk to. We've had a couple of close calls at our place including an evacuation order three years ago as we were "certain to be impacted by wildfire and embers". At the same time the wind was blowing the fire away from us while we couldn't leave the property due to flash flooding!

You can stress about these things or recite Dorethea Mackellar. I choose the latter.

We have 216 horses going around for $168,000 (24 races)

Check out the field for Race 9 at Melton Saturday night. Something 'unusual' about it?

PP talking some total crap this morning about last night's Ballarat meet

Questioning Greg Sugars drive on La Captain in R8, suggesting he did not go for the lead when it was there for the taking but then pushed the pace. The Lead Time was a couple of seconds faster than average and Q1 in a slick 28.8 - all the leader/winners doing. He also suggests a lack of vigour in the straight - everybody knows (respects) that Greg does not flog his horses, he used the whip, saw the horse was not really responding (and doing its best) and correctly assessed that it was not going to make up the difference

He then makes a whole topic of the race-caller initially going for the leader in R4 before suggesting otherwise. The margin was a nose. He mixes in some Queensland is better than Victoria theme to pad out a topic that was not a topic

Shepparton is popular with many trainers but not really Emma Stewart, which has to contribute to its popularity
It is most likely the distance. For a Ballarat trainer it is a good 35 min longer than from Melton
It is even further than going to Warragul
Warragul should be more popular with Melton trainers but the shorter trip than going to Shep is probably balanced out by the toll roads you have to take - they can add up for commercial vehicles

A ten year old bull horse, virtually finished as a racehorse in 2018, to contest the 2022 Inter-Dominion? He has eighty-three foals onto ground from his first crop and just stood his second season at a $3,000 fee. So his connections reckon it is a good idea to put him back in work and contest the Inter-Dominion, which falls smack bang in the middle of the breeding season.

I am sure there are some very sound reasons for this story being taken seriously, though I have no idea why. On this one I agree with Darrel Kerrigan's thoughtful analysis of the facts.

I read the story. My take - the ridiculous price scale for claiming races in Victoria. A race for runners where claim prices range between $10,000 and $100,000 is a joke. Sirletic's true value is $28,000 so putting a hundred grand on him ensures he will never be claimed. The next "cheapest" is Sicario who has at least won half a million bucks to justify his $75,000 tag. No hope of him being claimed at that price, probably never while Chris Alford drives him compared with how Daryl Douglas won with him at Kilmore two starts back. 40 to 50 to North America would seem a good around outcome. Nothing like what the owners paid for the horse but that was their call.

But for the money I'm sugesting would you be interested in the 200 start rising 11 year old Love In A Chevy for $50,000? Anyone? I think Archie is highlighting the bleeding obvious. Done properly claimers are good but the price structure HRV is using is off the wall.

After watching that performance are we expected to believe David Aiken is a spud of a trainer? Obviously, because the stewards have not queried the performance, just took a routine swab. I would be (a) forensically testing the swab for every substance known to mankind; (b) reviewing the stable returns from current and former trainers and transfer of ownership forms (include handwriting and fingerprint experts on that one); and (c) go through all records at APG like a dose of salts, including who entered the horse in the sale, who bid on the horse and who paid for it.

This stinks. The only thing about this race that seemed consistent was Chris Alford's typical poor drive on Sicario - ignore the chance to get a cart-up in the last lap then come 6 and 7 wide on the home turn.

And no, a change of stable environment doesn't cut it for me.

I am not home until tomorrow night but from the pre-HRA website era a quick perusal of my 1984/85 Year Book should provide an answer.

I'm guessing: Preux Chevalier wins the 1984 Whinfield CUP at Moonee Valley. Check out Peter Donegan's pink jacket...but great vision of the race.

Nope going by the video that was 8th December.

This was at Moonee Valley though.

Just looking at some of the beaten brigade in that Vic Cup and 2nd horse Panyan interestingly also won on 20th Oct 1984 at MV. V Knight sure got them fit. It was first up 13th Oct. Then from just 20th Oct to 5th Nov won 5/5.

Edit: Do I dare mention similarities with Boncel Benjamin to Panyan going from being driven (possibly trained) by S Duffy to then going to grand circuit horse with new trainer!!

GOT IT
But I cheated using your Panyan clue Brendan
That enabled me to look up his race on that night from his performance chart which then gave me the meeting code for that night which I could do a search for on Harnessweb

Well done tracking it down! I thought the Panyan clue would help get on right track. There was also one sneaky little clue in my first post!

I didn't realise Harnessweb had all that historical stuff. Thats excellent!

It is just the same info that the HRA search provides but can be useful for different approaches - unfortunately still has the same massive gaps that the other has. It has to be remembered that you really cannot rely on the HRA db before 91 (eg Village Kid never won any 89 Inter Heats)

Good little tidbit/quiz Brendan - you will have to do more

ps I hope I have not absolutely given it away despite my BIG clue

LOL I just read your first clue - massive compared to mine

I cannot say I am a Halloween fan but on TrotsVision they showed some footage of 4 children dressed up with their ponies in the parade ring. I hope they got them to do the length of the home straight for as we all know, the parade ring at Melton may as well be in Siberia as far as the number of viewers it attracts

Is this a serious (late) entry or just someone trying to help a race stand up for someone else. The horse is also entered for a 57-68 race on Friday.

R2 at Shep tonight - I loved Dan's call
Knowing Dan, I am pretty sure it was deliberate
At one point he calls

3yo filly Encipher has now earned $500,000
Looking back at her record I was somewhat surprised that she has been beaten 7 times (5 seconds mind you) and thought I would have a look at who had

1 Irish Black Label (a stablemate) - what has become of her? (most likely injured as she has not raced as a 3yo)
2 Playing Up (a stablemate) - she has not raced for 7 months
3 Petillante (stablemate)
4 Sounds Perfect (stablemate) - another who has not raced as a 3yo
5 Fiamma (stablemate) - another who has not raced as a 3yo
6 Amore Vita - now a stablemate but wasn't at the time
7 Just Hope

But even this small amount in the Win pool must have come very late and the pool could not have been much more than $100 at start time as No.1 was long odds on fav and although a late scratching after official start time it only resulted in $65 in deductions

Boort Punters Club got involved in R4 and put $400 of their $1,000 at $2.25 on Justburnforu and they burned their money big time
They must have a clown in charge - on this small track the horse who had only had 3 lifetime starts as a 3yo and < $5k in earnings had drawn 6/6 and had Alex Ashwood driving
Creative Lad won and took his earnings to over $100k

I love small track racing but it is a bit of an indictment on the track when a horse who has won 1 of 32 but drawn 1 can beat a horse that has won 11 of 138 drawn 4

Is Nikkita back from the gallops?

13yo Really Under Fire made it two in a row for the year at Charlton today

Jason Grimson might be interested but then again he prefers them out of form

ps Shortest winner today $2.30 and the average was about $11 and that was not due to one biggie (longest price was $34)

Good luck to them but, in reality, he is only a tough run away from a one-way trip to the USA and lasix for the rest of his career. I see Lochinvar Art trialled last week so he would be in good company.

I see South Coast Arden is on his way to Paul Fitzpatrick for the remainder of his Australasian career. Michael Guerin's report doesn't mention why and the horse's connections don't say either. A hint - watch the horse drop out to last in the NZ Cup on 8 November when he stopped quickly and hasn't been seen since. I suggest Sydney is his last stop before the USA should all else fail.

Ah lasix - the fear of not being able to use it, the reason why Americans are fighting against HISA (Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority)

When I saw that there was another dead heat at Charlton yesterday, I went straight to the replay to see if Luke may have called it (he called the one at Mildura the previous night)

He went for the one on the outside, when you look at this enlargement of the photo (that we can see in the results) you wonder whether he might not have been right

Looking at the breeding of 3yo first starter Gawn, I noticed he is a ¾ bro to Petillante

What I found just as interesting (and had not noticed before) was the fact that Petillante was raced solely by Clayton Tonkin as a 3yo last season
She was a good 2yo too so why would the other owners relinquish their shares - maybe Clayton made them a great offer
