No cheating for another 24 hours:
30 years ago today Robert Dunn got a race to race double culminating in the Hunter Cup.
Name the Hunter Cup winner and the runner up:
On the same night there were 4x Derby heats. Winsome Eagle took out a heat for David Aiken. Great Celebration took out a heat for Robbie & Russell Jack. Name the 2 other heat winners, one of which won the final the next week.
Can you also name the 2nd horse in the Vic Derby who later got revenge in the NSW Derby with the quinella reversed?
The Hunter Cup quinella and Vic Derby winner then went on to trifecta the Hunter Cup 2 years later.

I can't remember last week these days Brenno but just asked Luke at dinner and he got them right without cheating (not all).
Hunter Cup winner - Master Musician
2nd - Blossom Lady

2nd horse in the Derby who got revenge in NSW was Young Mister Charles.

How an industry as small as Australian harness racing has ended up with two $1million slot races on the same night defies belief.

Guerin is talking about the NZ Race and the WA Nullarbor isn't he?

WA is also basically a seperate state!
What horses are missing from each race? Would Louis have gone to NZ with the stronger depth there anyway? If races spaced apart would Louis have travelled to both WA and NZ?

He is now an 11yo who has won 11 of 170 starts
What a great interest and despite his strike rate not being stunning if you had put $10 the win on him every start
your $1,700 would now be $2,805. Not a bad little return

Off topic but I love Stawell. If you get a chance to see a replay of today's Stawell Gift. Kieren Mundine who came last was one of the most incredible runs I have ever seen. He stumbled coming out of the blocks and nearly face-planted, but did not give up and was only beaten by < 0.2secs by the winner = 2 metres. I reckon he might have won by at least that without the stumble

What has happened to Captain Confetti?
Put in a shocker in the last at Bendigo tonight
A year ago he had just come off 3 wins in a row at Melton
That had brought his record since coming over from NZ to 8 wins and 10 places from 27 starts
After those 3 Melton wins he dropped off but typical of the Douglas stable he was not spelled for another 17 starts (for two placings) which made his first campaign for them, one of 44 starts in 12mths
Maybe the vet examination will show something
https://www.harness.org.au/racing/fields/race-fields/?mc=BN280423#BNC28042301
Replays for the last two not up yet - I am guessing they have gone home and they wont be up until tomorrow

We had Sahara Miss provide a double at Mildura last weekend and last night Kateeshar provided a double with Byrneside Boom and Arggghhh
https://www.harness.org.au/racing/fields/race-fields/?mc=MX290423
Kateeshar never raced, nor did any of her siblings but they were out of outstanding juvenile Nemeeshar
I wish our records were better (bloody terrible!). Nemeeshar was bred in WA and briefly started her racing career there but then came East. I would have liked to have known if she was sold. Nothing decent online before 2013 (once again I say - how backward were our administrators) and the details you can get from the results earlier than this, tell you nothing more than the driver - even if you have the appropriate Year Book, you won't find out anything more than the driver of the winner

You just need to go to a meeting result eg 16th Dec 2002 Gloucester Park. Will show you owners name at that meeting (for the winning horse). Then click on the horse. The starts summary in that section then tells trainers name. Click on race results at leisure where you can then also see owners names (when horse in question is the winner).

I was somewhat shocked that it was 2013 - I would have sworn (correctly) that it was better than that
That is a little glitch - you should not have to hit monthly
(I will let HRA know about that)
Still need the traditional search to be better - the reason being that if you are starting from last night's results and click on Kateeshar it takes you to the traditional search results and you forget and use the Racing Performances tab which gives the results but only takes you to a crappy version of individual races

On Wednesday night, Don Boston, age 14, won his 47th race and our horse Mister Haywood, age 10, ran 2nd.
Both horses have overcome career threatening injuries and are racing in great shape proving once again, age is only a number.

The trainer of one of tomorrow's Cox Plate runners
“He’d work, go to the pub and have a punt,” he says.
“That’s how I got it [the bug]. I used to go to the TAB with him on a Saturday or so, and occasionally, if I had to go get him out of a pub, there’d be an SP there with a place card, and he’d give me one, and I’d fill it out.
“Also, on a Saturday night, you’d watch the trots at the Showgrounds on The Penthouse Club, and I’d make sure on a Thursday I’d buy the Truth and try and pick the last five winners. I never picked the last five winners ever.
“The broadcasters, the trainers, the jockeys, the horses, they were cult figures in those days. It was ingrained in me as a young kid living in Footscray at the time that it [the Cox Plate] is such a great race and such a great sport to be involved in.”

Falcon Seelster's influence ongoing
Falcon Seelster sired the very good sire McArdle
In turn McArdle sired the very good sire Tintin In America
Tintin In America sired the superstar filly Shartin NZ - as an aged mare was voted US Horse Of The Year, are rare feat for a mare and even more creditable when she came from Australasia
She took a time of 1.46.4 and won nearly 2 &1/2 million, including a million in one season
A month ago at Lexington Yearling sale her first foal, a filly by Capt Treacherous, sold for $140,000 to the bid of Tony Alagna (trainer of the Captain) who later said she had been purchased for Richard Poillucci, who was the original purchaser when Shartin was sold to the US. He had sold her to her current owners as a broodmare when she retired from racing.
So Falcon Seelster's influence is still being seen at the top levels, albeit from a distance these days.

Geelong is one of the tracks that can host mile races and just the same they bastardize the track by running 1140m races. WTF

Four races out of eight where 1140 metres, I suspect we have to get used to these types of races. Not a huge fan on what I have seen in WA.
One of the 1140 winners ,Johnny Redcoat is a 12 yo and has only ever been trained by one person and has had 247 starts! The trainer is JH Barker (the driver has the same surname, so I am assuming that they are related) so that is an amazing effort for both horse and trainer. Must be a story there.

Certainly not my first choice given we can never match dogs or gallops for speed. Havent watched many races but am told those at the back dont have much chance.
However, I dont think we (the whole industry) can constantly bemoan the fall of the industry and question whats being done and then turn around and be upset about 90 second racing. I am sure studies would suggest younger generation have a short attention span and I am sure the TAB are pushing screen time so whether we like it or not I think its a space we need to get into. We just have to go full noise on it rather than very sporadic so punters and trainer/drivers can figure out the way races are run and we can optomise these 90 second races.

My point was that Geelong can/did also run short 'world accepted mile races' so why do they need to run these races - for the sake of 30 secs?!

Daniel, the Barkers are pretty much as recognizable a name in Vic harness racing as Hall is in WA.
Jim (89yo) who trains Johnny is the Grandfather of Jackie who drove it (her dad is Rod)
Jim has won our highest award 'The Gordon Rothacker' medal
You need to brush up on your East Coast knowledge LOL
One way is to click on drivers and trainers names in the fields or results
You will then see tabs for Current Stats, Career Stats and Biography
However for a legend like Jim they are misleading in that they only start from 2000

Haven't cited truthfulness but second result on google when searching 'average attention span' is this article
https://www.wyzowl.com/human-attention-span/
It says the average attention span has shrunk 25% from 2000 to 2015. A mile race to 1140m race around that 25% less.
An extra 30 seconds of lead in time on Sky could be quite handy for punting dollar as well (if we were to use that extra 30 seconds as lead in time).

Of course he may have just been in a mood but he has definitely shown better mobile speed than that in the past.

I am not saying there is anything untoward or intent to gain an advantage, more a racing type thing but it is something I have not seen or noticed before.

Good decision by HRV to cancel today's Horsham yesterday (It got to 40 there today)
Strange that gallops thought it OK to proceed with Stawell races.
I reckon many are having a long trip home what with the Western Hwy being closed between Ararat and Beaufort
I saw the Maher racing truck pulled over by the boys in blue in Ararat this morning
Just before that I had seen a strange little cloud on the ridge as we approached Ararat - very strange on a hot blue sky day
Once we got to Buangor it was clear what it was
We were in Beaufort for early lunch at 11.30 and the bakery lady did not seem concerned about what was going on up the Hwy - I was very concerned
F#(&!$ fires, I am over them. Neighbouring Pomonal and now Beaufort

Due to the deteriorating track condition, Stewards, drivers and club personnel conducted a track inspection with concerns identified around the condition of the track near the 150m, between the 400m and 200m and near the 500m. After attempting some track remedial work and conducting a further assessment of the track, at approximately 3:55pm, Races 6 – 9 were abandoned, due to the state of the track which was no longer considered suitable or safe for racing purposes.

Harness Racing Australia recently [14th June] announced they had Invoiced Studs for some $920,944 for foals born in the 2023 season which were sired by Stallions that were subject to their Tax. Of course that sum of money has then been passed onto individual broodmare owners.
The immoral part of this Tax is that it is being collected, not for the betterment of the whole Industry, but to assist funding a $2 million Slots Race that only ten wealthy individuals or entities can enter by shelling out $100,000 for a Slot.
So in effect the broodmare owners of Australia have become the largest sponsors of a race in Australia [and probably anywhere in the world] and in return have not received one single mention of thanks or acknowledgement for their donation!

Why not. Would be exciting racing.

I think it could be exciting on big tracks (there may be chaos on small tracks)
I might make it for 2 lap races with last at the half lap eliminated - you are only going to lose 3 horses this way But that will still create moves, speed and excitement
The drawbacks may be that fast starters/leaders would once again be at a big advantage. Would it be exhausting for the horses? Nobody is going to want to be on the fence other than behind the leader
I can remember somebody once suggesting that the sprint lane should be allowed approaching the bell - that would be good in this type of racing But I still cannot picture what happens when the sprint lane runs out and a horse has only made up half a length (it could work on a figure 8 track but we don't have the money to build them)
codywinnell
08-12-2024, 02:35 PM
I won't name names Kev, but the Figure 8 track has been raised by some visionaries in previous years. Fact is, you need to change things up sometimes, and whilst such ideas seem wild at first, the world's greatest ideas always seem wild to someone at first...
On the type of race where a contestant is eliminated each time X number of distance goes by, I could be wrong, but I thought the legendary Anthony Butt may have even thrown this open for discussion some years back. If that is completely incorrect and my memory is playing tricks on me, then please disregard haha. Fact is, again, it's a novel idea and in tough times and when you need to find ways to engage new audiences (in any industry), no idea is unworthy of at least exploration.

Bloody scary IMO & it was just luck that half the field did not come down.

The Brimacombes owned the quinella in R1 at Terang today
It paid $60 but the pool was small (only 10 units on it)
Maybe they backed their winner Sonarmi Joh
and better still their 2nd placegetter Unspoken Love who paid $28 the place (Fixed Odds)

Both Kilmore Cups were somewhat boring.
Despite there being plenty of time to make a move esp in the trot - Nobody did
I guess this happens when the fav ends up in the death - they don't want to give him cover?
The trot was more interesting because of the scramble for positions early and the fact that the fav in the death was still too good and therefore the leader did not win

https://harnesslink.com/australia/detectives-probe-animal-cruelty-allegations/
You would have to say Kate is a battler in this industry, a perfect example of how hard it is to succeed in this game - having never averaged better than $750 per starter in any of her seasons as a trainer
Why would anyone target her AND especially why would anyone target this particular horse - who had only won 2 or 38, had not raced for 2 months and is owned by her family
“I’ve got no doubt it was deliberate – Kenny (Magaccis) was in a yard among other horses, so I believe whoever did this came particularly for him, not just any horse on the property,” Attard said.
I would need her to explain how she comes to the above conclusion from the above situation
Get well Kenny

Greyhound racing in NZ will end on July 31, 2026
Now think about the outcry over Trish's story above.
Those who think whips in racing don't have to go, other than being carried as a control tool, should really think about whether horse racing can survive the general public's expectations on animal welfare

NZ just banned greyhound racing, terrible for those involved and the dogs.
If this were to happen in Victoria it could be a big win for Harness racing. I know it's a terrible way to look at it but we need this. I know they will come for horse racing next and we will be an easy target but it could be our only hope for the sports future .

I can't see greyhound getting the chop in Australia as there are 58 active greyhound tracks in Australia. The NSW Government tried a ban, and it failed miserably.
By comparison, the United Kingdom has 21 greyhound tracks, Ireland has 17, New Zealand has six, United States has two and Mexico has one.

58 is pretty much what the USA once had Steve. It will be of little consideration when the government comes for them. It will be the influential billionaires that are most important to the gallops

I did hear on Main Stream Media that the Greyhound ban doesn't start until 2026. So there's a big chance it will be overturned by then.
As for them being safe in Aus just because of the number of tracks I don't believe that makes any difference. If a government thinks there are more votes in shutting them down or is making a deal with the Greens anything is possible.

When looking for some extra detail for an article, stick with stating the sire - not an unknown dam
“It wasn’t an ideal night,” Svanosio said. “I have just had Arcee Phoenix at Werribee Vets and he has got a clean bill of health.”

Anyone can answer . What do you think of drivers leaning back in the gig?
IMO leaning back in the the gig gives no more of an advantage than sitting up straight with your weight balanced over the axel. In fact weight behind the the axel can cause a wobble action even if unseen. This is demonstrated by people towing caravans with more weight behind the axles. They are called "wobblers" .Watch a movie called " The Worlds Fastest Indian "

Good movie!
It doesn't look as safe, if the reins broke I imagine the driver would have to fall out the back of the cart AND it looks pretty silly.
The way the Americans do it, it has to add metres to how far from the leader the last horse is
trish
03-16-2025, 03:13 PM
It sure does look silly . They hold the reins so far back IMO it is dangerous .
One driver a few weeks back hampered the horse behind him by at least 1/2 a length & it cost the hampered horse the race & I thought to myself I wonder if a protest would be upheld. I would say yes , it would have to be .
If the rule is there , it should be policed.
