The end of an era in some ways today - the last racing activity on the Warragul track before a significant upgrade begins on Monday, October 6 to completely recamber the turns and straights and apply new surface material.

Ironically one of the quickest mile rates ever seen in a trial at Warragul highlighted the program - check out the replay on YouTube www.youtube.com/warragulharness (http://www.youtube.com/warragulharness)

Glad you like it - the freeway is at the back of the trees and the railway runs by the grounds back behind where we film from with the station and freeway exit right near the front gate. We are also only a short dash from the centre of the town so very centrally located!

I will give myself a rare pat on the back as I was the commentator - I also film them at the same time so perhaps you could say multi talented!

In a past life I called races on radio but not anymore (long story), now I have to sit and watch!

Toohard
09-28-2014, 07:14 PM
You should have pressed on with calling Kyle

Looking at some old photo albums last few days. Horse I had a share in used to race there (Warragul) often. When it was the 3 furlong track. Late 1986 - early 1987.

Only have pages from racebook. One of them December 1986. Says fastest mile rate recorded 2.04 Winsaffair 1979-80.

Our horse went 2.15 winning trial Yarrambat. That made him a 'moral' next start. (No better than 28) Warragul 30-12-1986. 5/1 into 5/2. Ran 2nd beaten 1.5m in 2.14.

Winner trained by Noel Alexander and driven by Jayne Davies.

Amlin
09-28-2014, 07:31 PM
They have won plenty of races there over the years Paul so you were bound to run into them at some stage!

The camber on the bends will be lifted from 8% to 12.5% and on the straights from around 2% to 4% when works commence shortly. New surface as well plus the flat spots, soft spots and hard spots etc should disappear. The engineer tells me the track should quicken by a couple of seconds. The current record sits around 1:57.4 so I am excited about what might be achieved on reopening day, December 1. They did go 1:56.7 around there in the 90's before the pegs went in and distances changed.

The track is 22 metres wide from rail to outside fence, a legacy of when they decided to start running 10 off the front in Victoria (briefly) in the late 80's so there is plenty of room to move.

We have thought at the club that the track might end up a little like Delaware, home of Little Brown Jug which is a bit shorter and narrower than Warragul but banked really well. John Tapp's comments on In The Gig last week were interesting. He went to the Jug and commented on the amazing quality of the track. We might just end up with a point of difference in Victoria when our track reopens.

Here is a photo of the track for those who have not been trackside before

Amlin
09-28-2014, 07:33 PM
By the way Paul I would have pressed on with calling too but I got stopped in my tracks a year ago and those who look after that won't let me anymore!

Richard prior
09-28-2014, 08:06 PM

RACE 4 – SURE PRODUCTS Q0 PACE (C2+) 2138m MS

It was established by stewards that A Barnes (STORMY TARA) (NZ) drove in this event without wearing a body protector. Subsequently A Barnes was charged under Rule 159 (7) to which he pleaded guilty. When assessing the matter of penalty stewards were mindful that A Barnes was advised to wear an approved vest two weeks prior to tonight’s race and that in tonight’s race he failed to wear a vest at all and also his failure to wear a vest in tonight’s event presented a serious workplace health and safety risk. In view of these circumstances Mr. Barnes’s licence to drive in races was suspended for a period of 3 months.

Pre race blood samples were collected from CLEOPATRA SHANNON.

An application was tendered by the connections of CLEOPATRA SHANNON to drive the mare in a more aggressive manner at the start. Acting under Rule 44(2) stewards denied this application due to the extremely poor recent form of the mare.

If ever there was a perfect example of why slow sectionals should forever be banished to the annals of history, then Jason Turnbull has provided it tonight at Penrith. Instead of being rewarded for giving his charge every possible, throwing caution to the wind at the start and then being able to dictate the pace to perfection on a horse of questionable ability with a demon drive...I will bet his name will be in the stewards report with a fine against his name. Wouldn't happen in a weight for age at Randwick with Hugh Bowman on board. Race 8 when the replay comes up.

Kim Hillier continues to plunder Shepp with a double last night. These raids by her stable are a relatively new thing - I wonder what prompted the change of attack

Stewards don't seem to have been a wrap for Amanda Turnbull's driving last night - querying her drives on beaten favs in the 1st and 8th
Daryl Douglas took the initiative in the first and I think if she had have learnt from that she would have done the same in the 8th
Stewards probably extra vigilant when it comes to heats

There are lots of things that can be done to help punters to be "welcomed and pampered" as they should be!
Firstly, what has happened to the free sky channel coverage on-line at the moment, for all codes, it comes on for 30 seconds then turns off, not everyone has access to Sky channel in a TAB, can watch at home, or club or pub etc........there is an audience coverage not being met!
They need to fix up the radio coverage over the whole of Australia, I drive thousands of kilometres from one end of the country to the other and north to south, to say the coverage is pathetic is an understatement, more loss of potential punters! I live in a town with a racetrack......if you go less than 1 kilometre from the town, there is no coverage! I can get partial coverage from a QLD station, but I am based in NSW! WTF!
Fix up the basics, provide coverage for all, don't just rely on Sky Channel, make it better!

If you can't listen or see for free, people won't bother!

Thanks Kev, I have Sky races through my TAB account, you click Media Centre, and you can watch the race, it is video streaming there is usually a 20 second delay from real-time, but for the past week it comes on and then turns off after approx 30 seconds, you then have to click and wait for it to come back on, it is very frustrating when you are on something in front and they are coming after it and the race STOPS!....wonder if anybody else is experiencing this?? It may just be my computer!....Well spotted Kev!

I have Sky 1 on Foxtel but often do the TAB log in and watch Sky online anyway - esp if I want to watch Sky 2.
Your problem does sound strange - you haven't gone over your internet quota have you?
I have found Google chrome a better search engine than Internet Explorer for watching Sky eg Internet Explorer will not refresh the 'Next To Go' etc columns when you click their refresh arrows but Google will

Nice little yarn out of the Redcliffe meeting this week. From the Courier Mail http://m.couriermail.com.au/sport/superracing/ken-parker-81-drives-colada-rose-to-win-at-redcliffe-paceway/story-fnii0njy-1227093522011?nk=1601924706fac1382ef4085ec6a17bd2

IT’S not uncommon to get stuck behind senior citizen drivers at Redcliffe.
But at Redcliffe Paceway yesterday, 81-year-old Ken Parker put an entirely new spin on the oft-joked-about stereotype.
Parker steered Colada Rose, a mare he bred, owns and trains, to victory in the fourth race, bringing up her first win in 61 starts.
It was his first win in the seat since April 2008.
“It will take a month to take the smile off my face. I’ll have to have an operation to get rid of it,” Parker said.
“It’s quite a good thrill because she’s been knocking on the door and running seconds and thirds and seconds and thirds, but just couldn’t quite crack the one. But today she cracked it and led all the way.”

Parker first entered harness racing in 1950 but left the sport when he became a family man.
“I gave them away, got married and had a family and had to give horses away for 20 years,” he said.
“When I retired at 65 I went and bought a horse and finished up with about three or four of them.
“That’s what keeps me going, that’s what keeps me alive.
“At 72 I had (heart) bypasses done and got a new lease on life, so I said I’m not going to waste it, I’m going to put it to good bloody use, so I am.
“If I didn’t have a horse I don’t know what I’d do. I’ve only got the one now. I sacked one, it was no good.”
Parker conceded Colada Rose will probably “see me out” but he revels rubbing shoulders with rivals only a fraction of his age.
“People say I don’t look 81 and I say ‘what’s 81 got to look like? Is there some set bloody pattern?’ You know,” he said.
“People guess anywhere between 65-72 and I say ‘I love you.’
“This mare, I bred her. I had her mother. She’s five-years-old and it’s been a while since I’ve had a horse racing before she came along.”

Race 2 at Geelong tonight is restricted to horses trained by the holder of a B grade Trainers Licence. Is this a common type of restricted race - I know I am not very observant but I have not noticed this before

Mister JayKO
10-21-2014, 05:41 PM
Unheard of - I dare say its restrictive practice but in all my time I have never seen a race programmed for a class of trainer.

Race For Fun
10-21-2014, 06:09 PM
They have started running something like that in N.S.W. Races for horses with an average mile rate no better than 2:02 over their last six starts (competitive stakes) and races for trainer who did not train a winner in the season 2013 - 2014 (encouragement stakes). They change the mile rate of the competitive stakes and some encouragement stakes are for less than five or 10 wins for a season.

COMPETITIVE & ENCOURAGEMENT STAKES

Effective immediately HRNSW has changed the conditions of the Competitive and Encouragement Stakes.
Competitive Stakes
The intention of Competitive Stakes events is to allow those horses that might not be competitive in class or divided stakes
racing to be placed against others of the same capability at a given time in their career.
Generally these races have worked very well prior to the introduction of the new race programming and handicapping
system on 1 September 2014 and since that date.
Numerous circumstances have occurred in all Regions where well performed horses have gained a start under the
advertised conditions by virtue of competing in standing start or long distance events in New Zealand within its last 6 starts.
As soon as this scenario frequently occurred, which is against the intention of the race conditions, HRNSW took steps to
ensure that such scenario does not arise again into the future.
The new conditions for Competitive Stakes events is as follows:
 For horses which have had a minimum of 6 career starts and whose last 6 starts were in NSW
 An average individual mile rate of no better than a specified time is to be stated
 The average individual mile rates are to be based on a specified number of starts (i.e. 4, 6 or 10)
 The conditions may or may not have a specified class restriction (i.e. assessed no better than C1).
For example:
For horses which have had a minimum of 6 starts and whose last 6 starts were in NSW that have an average
individual mile rate of no better than 2:02.0 (over the last 6 starts) and are assessed no better than C1.

Encouragement Stakes

The intention of Encouragement Stakes events is to allow trainers that have not won a specified number of races over a
prescribed time to race against other trainers in the same situation.
Generally these races have worked very well prior to the introduction of the new race programming and handicapping
system on 1 September 2014 and since that date.
Numerous circumstances have arose in the 2014/15 season where trainers with limited wins in the 2013/14 season have
been eligible under the conditions and have gone on to win multiple races in the 2014/15 season.
As soon as this scenario occurred, which is against the intention of the race conditions, HRNSW took steps to ensure that
such scenario does not arise again into the future.
The new conditions for Encouragement Stakes events is as follows:
 The conditions may or may not have a specified class assessment front and/or specified class assessment back (i.e.
C0/C1).
 For horses trained by trainers which have not won a specified number of races during a specified time frame.
 Horses must be trained by an eligible NSW licensed trainer for 28 days prior to acceptances.
 Eligibility is determined by lodgement of the stable return to HRNSW.
For example:
3YO+ C0/C1. For horses trained by trainers which did not train a winner in the 2013/14 season. Trainers who have
trained a winner in the 2014/15 season are ineligible. Horses must be trained by an eligible NSW licensed trainer for
28 days prior to acceptances. Eligibility determined by lodgement of the stable return with HRNSW.

Kev, what is this? Get your man at HRV on to this.

This week’s Insider Access newsletter contains the following feature stories:

AU: Thin skinned stewards - Following an exclusive article on Harnesslink earlier this month, Victorian horseman Lance Justice is the subject of stewards' inquiry. Angered by the suspensions he received at Melton on September 29, Justice questioned the lack of definition between light and heavy interference stating: "The stewards are too heavy handed. There is no defining difference between light, medium or heavy interference, and as such, it’s just bang...this is the sentence. Its mandatory sentencing gone mad."

AU: Novelty or offensive? - In a world of political correctness, would be it okay to conduct a race limited to third generation Australians? How about a race for men only?

A friend of mine recommended him as a mate for a mare in NZ a few years ago and the lady breeder didn't want a bar of him but my friend persisted with the recommendation, The lady went ahead and bred her mare to Grin and it ended up being a pretty good result, Smiling Shard.

A spoken advised, "that immediately the start is effected the mobile will move to the left off the track, and then follow the field for the rest of the race.......the starter and driver will be trained in 1st aid procedures to provide assistance in case their are any accidents." They also added the vehicle had a 3rd usage, but said, "we won't go into that at this stage!"

Hope I don't offend anyone by mentioning The Cup but you have to have sympathy for the horse that died. Also the horse that kicked the fence and broke it's leg.

Fully understand if you delete this post Tony.

I've read a bit on here about the poor tv cover of Harness Racing especially in Victoria.
Can it be that Channel 7 used these same people today to do the camera and production work for the Melbourne Cup.
We were provided with coverage of Channel 7 efforts today on NZ Tab TV.
IMO it was the worst piece of sporting television I think I have ever witnessed. The first 100 metres of aerial coverage was not bad.
The last 250 metres from the main camera allowed one to finally see where there runner was positioned. The rest, taken from a ground level moving object positioned some 50 metres in front of and to the inside of the field provided absolutely no comparative perspective of where each horse was positioned. It was genuinely pathetic.

Lots of complaints over here too teecee. You couldn't hear the call nor see where horses were positioned down straight first time. Only option to watch live was Channel 7. Two minute delay on racing channels (Sky & TVN) that did their normal camera position coverage.

A complete balls up!! On the big stage!!

I've watched the Cup every year from 1970 onwards, I missed today's live coverage but just watched the replay and have to agree Tony, That's was the worst I've seen in 40 odd years, Absolutley atrocious.

Usually you can't compare the coverage, It's fantastic but Jesus, What were they thinking today??? How good would the split screen that the NZ trots have looked??? At least you could have seen your horse in the run. Todays coverage by 7 was like having tunnel vision.

We are used to the inside of the field camera Tony and when they use it for close-up panning it is not too bad, what was particularly bad this year was that long distance shot employed after the first 100m of aerial all the way until the back straight - dreadful and resembled a promo for tourists type production

There is no doubt that Terror To Love is one of the best horses to come out of NZ. It's just a shame that he has never really fired in Australia. To have won this race three times and as good a chance to win this years as any other horse in the race is proof of his tallent. If he wins will he get an invite to the MM (is it one of the invite races)?

Big ask of For A Reason first start in a stand and it's in a group 1 race with all those seasoned stand horses. Trials when they step with about six other horses are a big difference to $700,000 races.

If we needed any reminding that the Gallops industry has 1000 times the clout that we do - just look at all the positive stories in The Age today and I have seen a promo for a positive story on 7 news tonight (after the drama of the Cup). As Ray Chaplin (Equineexcellence) has pointed out in the past - we really do need to attract that top end customers (to have any clout)

Bonnie

When we raced at Moonee Valley we would invite 20/30 clients 2 or 3 times a year to dinner and a night of harness racing. Some of these people would then race horses with us for fun and a social night out. We have never invited anyone to Melton. It is our premier harness racing venue but because of location and lack of corporate facilities it fails to attract ' top end customers ' HRV 's focus is on the punter but IMO the punter is not tomorrows owner. It is a serious concern for breeders as ownership requires not only a passion for the sport but the spending money to sustain that passion.
We attended an ownership group meeting a few weeks ago . When I looked around the table I realised that all attendees were business people who had an income outside of harness racing . The AFL have realised that there is a higher expectation for better facilities , comfort ,dining, and public transport access and have rationalised and improved their grounds to cater for this ( no more standing room at the Footy ).
Until we lift our game at our premier facility I cannot see top end customers wanting to drive all the way to Melton for a night out.

Spot on Anne. I am only an enthusiast who has drifted to and from harness for 45yrs and was in my 'cycling period' when Melton happened (not that I would have had any say) but it just astounds me that HRV adopted this "we will just create our own little pond" mentality

ps The 7 racing coverage just had a story about how failed racehorses are retrained - all these stories are no coincidence, they are the gallops industry showing how it can respond to adverse publicity.

Two points from Junee meeting on Saturday night.

Race 5. First quarter is up a hill and round a tight bend. Panella absolutely rushes out her metropolitan drives to go low 26s at Menangle. I'm not convinced they went 25.8 at Junee.
Race 6. Can anybody point me in the right direction on the non runners and Gina Gina. To be declared a non runner my understanding is you must have been denied a fair start. To me Gina Gina clearly gallops before the point of no return, impacting the three non runners. So to me, this is the correct ruling that they were declared non runners. But isn't it also true Gina Gina didn't get a fair crack at the start (albeit it was it's own fault)? So why is that horse declared a runner. Stewards comments say Broke After Start. While I am of the opinion it broke before the start, if it was in fact after the start then obviously the other three got impacted after the start and were then therefore deemed to be given a fair start and should be runners? Where am I going wrong?

Richard prior
11-10-2014, 12:11 PM
Totally agree Breno, Gina Gina should have been declared a non runner as well and the horse 3 in from the outside has clearly struck the gate before they were released, Surely you would flip the red light on and restart the race.

"Just caught up with ABOB's 2nd start at Charlton on Monday = public appearances are his future.
Smoken you were right (see ABOB thread) - he will never win a race and I do not think he is doing his stud career any favours (would have been better to keep his lack of ability/speed a secret)

Getting off topic - some improvement by Magic Attack to win that race and notch his first win in 3½ yrs despite death seating in nice time (someone fancied him as he was only 18/1 after being 124/1 the previous week when he did little)"

Back out to $95 today at Maryborough despite winning his last start and he won again!

RACE 8 - MERRY CHRISTMAS PACE (2ND HEAT) (2240 MS)
Chris Mallia, trainer of Pagans Gift, was questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance of the gelding. Mr Mallia explained that he attributed the performance of Pagans Gift to the gelding being best suited when racing in a forward position. Vincent Langdon, driver of Pagans Gift, added that he was surprised of the sectionals recorded by Pagans Gift as he did not feel Pagans Gift was actually travelling as fast as evidenced by the sectional times recorded.
Post-race blood samples were collected from Pagans Gift at 8:30pm, two and a half hours subsequent to this event.

He was classes above that lot last night Norman ($2- on Thursday was generous I thought) and the pressure Hall Jnr put on the leader early only enhanced his prospects. I think a better guide to his upcoming prospects could be gauged by the fast class race that followed last night. Tuxedo Tour went round fav in that race after two slashing performances his past 2 both against Heez On Fire. TT wasn't able to race in his desired manner on pace but still finished off strongly to be on the heals of the winner and runner up both of whom will be heading towards the upcoming two big cups. Im not sure either of the aforementioned will secure starts in those G1s but imo would certainly be very competitive in the consolations.

Thanks for the response...
So a nice horse well placed by his trainer. Capable of winning a good race here and there through his high speed if it is run to suit.

Three Trafalgar trainers will be seeking to outperform one another in the fourth race at this Monday afternoon's Warragul harness racing meeting.
Chris Hunter, his son Glenn and Glenn's partner Tamie Frith all have starters engaged in the race.
Chris saddles up Feel The Rhythm from barrier one against Glenn's horse Shicka Sharka from gate five.
Tamie Frith trains and drives Bettor Biaggi which starts from barrier three.
Feel The Rhythm ran a good enough race on debut during the week to suggest it will be a chance again on Monday at start two.
Chris Hunter will be looking for a different driver in the race though as his son steers his own horse Shicka Sharka this week.
Bettor Biaggi is unlucky not to have won a race over it's short career so far and should be thereabouts in Monday's race.
Shicka Sharka showed good form with a victory before going for a spell and should improve on whatever it does in Monday's race.
Elsewhere it is a strong eight event card on Monday with a number of local horses engaged, especially in the first race, the Trotters Handicap.
Locally owned and trained three-year-old Bad Boy Cullen returns to racing with a good barrier draw in race three, while fellow Gippsland horse, veteran Melton Little Max, is chasing another Warragul win for trainer Allan Preston in race six after scoring at the Warragul meeting last month.
Fifteen year old pacer Mister Douglas is competing in the last race.
First event on Monday is at 1:28pm with free admission to the course for patrons.

Just wondering, stewards report from Globe Derby 10/01/15 there is an R. Sanders listed as a steward. Does S.A. have a steward by the same name or is this the R. Sanders from NSW? Not important just wondering?

Popular former Melbourne horseman Frank Hoban has died at age 90. Sons Shane and Gary followed their dad into the sport.

When I worked at HR Weekly over 10 years ago I interviewed Frank, a former boxer in his youth. At that stage he was the last trainer on the Gower Park track in Preston, and would jog his horse in the traffic down Murray Road every morning for pacework on the track. He always promised me a ride around the track (must have had a double jog cart) but I never did get there. There was a photo I saw some years ago of a horse parked at the traffic lights which was on the front of the Harness Racer - perhaps it was Frank driving.

One of the real characters of our sport who would have taken a lot of yarns with him. One of his best trotters was Bravado Vale (Kilmore Trotters Cup)

In keeping with celebrating the life of Frank Hoban.
Gower Park trials, of a Sunday morning, were a big part of my introduction to the sport. Way too young to have driven around the circuit 'laughs' but I can remember it having three corners rather than two bends, tighter than the Showgrounds. Many of the doyens of the sport including Gordon Rothacker, Phonse Hickey trialled there and young drivers like Ginger Gleeson developed their skills. I think Ging was a bit of a demon around Gower Park 'smiles'.
With the Northland Drive-in adjoining, the car parking for the horse floats and trucks along Gower St found it doubling as scabs alley for the more frugal young lad of a Friday night (obviously keeping their dosh for a dabble on the trots). And for those who doubt the intentions of a young lad, the hang on the car window speakers could be turned up over the fence :)

Gower Park track looks like still there! Reckon used to be red scoria? Now called Blake Park by look of it. Drive In now a big shopping centre. Over to right where Bunnings is used to be Preston Hostel. Where I first ‘landed’ back in late 60’s as a young lad. Can remember waking up first morning seeing Drive In screen and think was a huge cricket sightscreen. Wasn’t there for long but can recall seeing horses going round one morning and wondering what was going on.

hahahah! Turning speakers up near fence worked at many Drive Ins!!

I was there about 3 years ago and took some photos. The track still there along with some distance markers and track use regulation signs and the tie up area. Track is like a square with rounded edges. How they ran fields of eight around it amazes me!

On the above pic the tie up and wash area is on the corner near the word Park, beside what is now the Northland Homemaker Centre.

Silly thing is Brent the horse that went from 1/1 to try to get to the death is a Mildura local Trainer Driver.
With a Cramp horse leading (2nd Fav) and a Cramp horse in the death seat (4th Fav), and you are $28.70 whats the real chance of you gettin the death?
Zero.

You dared to venture over the creek into Heidelberg West Paul?! The red scoria might have been on the athletic track built as part of the Olympic Village for the '56 Melbourne Games, upper right corner in the pic.

Kyle, did you pick a vantage point to call the trials? Not sure if they called them. Don't think the late maestro Bruce Skeggs OAM called but would have graced being a long term Heidelberg Councillor and MLA for Ivanhoe. Can't remember any mobile starts...imagine getting up to release speed let alone hitting the first bend! How about, for a bit of nostalgia, Hunter Cup stand qualifiers head to Gower Park

I did more racing at the athletic track myself Wayne - your local knowledge makes me think we may have lived closed to each other at some point. As well as that I taught in West Heidelberg for 10yrs
