With the October heat wave we have been experiencing, I was looking forward to Ararat trots tonight. How unlucky can they be, first cool day for yonks with the Apparent (feels like) temp already dropping to single digit by 4pm

Wow....the winner bolted, broke, took the lead again and continued to bolt.
Was that Lauren Pinellas first drive back after injury?
That was a very difficult drive !
Must not have stretched her arms as she came out and won the next on a $1.04 fav.
No value at Newcastle with the first two each at $1.04

The average winning margin for the 8 race program was >13m (between 1st and 2nd of course)

It must have been meal time between 8.00 and 8.30 tonight at Ballarat for the HRA/HRV results page is missing Race 4
The TAB tells us $1.10 fav Linda Lovegrace won but we will have to wait for someone to wake up to find out times etc.

Surely Lance would realise that when he was driving Smoken Up he could get away with those tactic's as the opposition would quickly hand up or be run into the ground but not every horse is Smoken Up Lance.

Favourite punters would have done very nicely for themselves at Mildura tonight
as we saw 6 faves and 2 second faves win on the 8 race program
Although we did not see a winner pay more than $3.20, the faves were not ridiculously short either with the shortest winners being $1.60 and $1.90

Noel, what was with the Bendigo weather today (20/1) as I see they pulled the pin on holding Bendigo dogs (not that I care about the dish-lickers), looking at the BOM for Bendigo it would not seem to be anything out of the ordinary

It was very humid in Bendigo with some morning showers, with a top of 34.
It's still 34. I don't know what the max is for cancellation of the greyhounds.
It's Country Week cricket here this week, and I went to an oval close by around 11. They were playing. so the showers didn't affect them.
Can't explain the dog cancellations.

Today’s afternoon meeting at Bendigo has been officially abandoned during kennelling when the temperature exceeded 26 degrees in the race kennels. The professional view of the on-track veterinarian was that these conditions were too hot for the Bendigo meeting to continue.

It felt like the old Cramptown racing at Mildura tonight with the first 7 favourites getting up - 6 of them odds on
The difference however was that the closest to domination was Colin Rogers training a double

It was a day meet originally too.

Few scratchings now unfortunately. No press publicity on the industry website for the race.

Probably one of the weakest open company races you will ever see going around for $30k

I know it is easy in hindsight but having Horsham's feature today, the Gp3 Tontine Trotters final, within 3min of the Adelaide Cup was always going to see it bumped to Sky 2

Pouring rain too...the drought has broken.

Perhaps they will need to rely on trainers "this" side of town to fill their fields. Not sure many will be keen to be on the Monash in peak hour for a 6pm start each week.

Our old friend the HRA website informs us that Andy Gath actually trained five winners at MV in September 2001. Brent Lilley has also prepared five winners at Melton.


Bob Knight and Tubby Peace also prepared five winners each in town.

Good win by Hi Tech Fury at Stawell yesterday for Cranbourne horseman Ken Browne.


Ken is not afraid to travel with his horse, on the quick back up from a second at Bendigo on Saturday night.


The horse races again a bit closer to home at Warragul next Monday.

Hi Tech was my best bet of the day but unfortunately I think it was also Rob Aubers so when I looked at the odds it was odds on (look on) but ended up paying $2.35.
He held the track record at Stawell for a while. Another that loves the track is Metrofromelle and she was very impressive in the way that she won the last
There have been a few improvements at Stawell - new bigger and better bank of tvs in the betting area, a replay screen in the lounge, new entrance feature
There was a decent crowd there, especially for a Wednesday

This part worries me however:

"Unfortunately, harness racing is a lot more about keeping the punter happy these days. Harold Park races moved to Menangle and Moonee Valley moved to Melton, so crowds are not great now. It’s sad to see. Occasionally there’s a good crowd at a meeting, which is exciting, but it doesn’t happen too often."

Can anybody tell me how we can survive without followers (= owners)? I am scratching my head and thinking of what might happen one day. Could we survive with just a dozen farms/owners supplying the racing population or what is the answer? I don't want to be a negative Nellie, it's just that I worry about where we are heading and whether the gallops will more or less eliminate us if we do not get our act together

Thanks for the link Kevin. Almost everyone around the Stawell, Ararat area would know Kerryn, she would have to be one of our sports greatest advertisements. She has not let fame go to her head, she has time for everybody. I've never herd her be rude or even complain, shes always happy and cheerful .

Bloody hell - went through Temora today but forgot to seek out the great one's statue. I am not fully functioning pre-lunch but how could I let such an opportunity slip, especially when I now see that it is pretty much in the main street. There is only one place for me now - see pic. Anyone too young to know which horse I am referring to - wiki Temora to see a pic of what I didn’t!

Some years ago I stopped at Paleface's statue in Temora in the late afternoon on a sunny, windy autumn day, and the nearby poplar trees were shedding their leaves in the flickering afternoon light, thus creating the illusion that Paleface was alive and pacing again.

Too many towns! It was Pepper Tree BUT I was just out of Cowra on our way to Canowindra - our overnight stopover (I was getting tired Noel)

The reason I mentioned their font was that I was actually distracted when we passed the entrance but knew I had just seen something familiar and I said to my better half "what was that last farm?" and she said..... Waffling, I know but I was amazed that it registered without really having read it

Leading driver Chris Alford could only get one drive at Maryborough today before heading to Swan Hill for four - maybe that is why we call them drivers

(I know it is only 2.5hrs between these tracks but even in this example Chris would have had to spend 5+hrs on the road - probably about his daily average)

In WA, there are a bunch of $10k and $15k C0-C1 races. Why. Our little horse is a C9 and its tough to find races for him. What they should do is increase the stake with the more races you've won. So a c1 is $5500 a c3 is $7k and a c10 is $9k. Only fair to win more if you've proven yourself by winning

Maybe I missed this when I was away up North but I noticed this morning's age has no liftout for Saturday's gallops - only a mere half page for Flemington in their sports section (as per a weekday meet)
Is this a reflection on racing? A cutback by RV - do they fund it? Or symptomatic of the irrelevance of paper form guides nowadays?

Very mild weather blessed Stawell harness today for the Maori Legend.
It was the official opening of the recently renovated bistro and HRV Chairman Dale Monteith was in attendance
I am not sure our solitary bookie's decision to move into the bistro paid off - I never saw him take a bet
I would have liked to be a bookie for Race 7, I could not believe the market for what was an open race with Our Sir Ivanhoe $2.30 fav
I fear home viewers may have seen (or not seen) plenty of races shafted to Sky 2 as every second race seemed to have a false start today
Jason Lee came within a metre of driving the Quaddie but Mum's Keayang Squizzy pipped him

Race 2 at Newcastle Saturday 16th - result Dead Heat - Kinsella and Manaway. Doesn't happen often but happens enough
Bill Buckley (Maitland Trainer and driver of Kinsella) bred both horses. They believe that to be close to a first.

What is the point of having silk colours in the form guide (and made available to Sky - for their leaders icons at the bottom of the screen) if they are not adhered to
eg R5 Bendigo tonight - the form (and Sky icons) is telling me that Art Prevails driver is basically in orange colours but it is in hot pink

Thanks Trish, to appreciate Three Chances dam - Delightful Chance, you have to swap back and forward between HRNZ and HRA. I wish the 2 bodies could work together as there is so much overlap nowadays.
Maybe there has been 'a little' improvement for if you look at HRA's progeny list for Delightful Chance you will see no performance details for the well performed Luckisaladytonight NZ (2002) but if you click on her full sister Presidential Affair and look at her progeny you will see the details for her well performed son State Of Affairs NZ (2006). Why I find this strange is that both were NZ only performers - HRA gives us details for one but not the other but like I said maybe a little improvement was made between 2001 and 2006

Overall HRA does a bit better job because it lists all of a mares progeny while on HRNZ the list of progeny for an exported broodmare ceases after she has been exported eg on HRNZ Delightful Chance only appears to have gone to the breeding barn 4 times while HRA lists all her 13 services

Alright peeps. I need help. I live in Canada and like to watch the replays when my horses race. Sometimes if the time difference is right, I get to listen in (there seems to be no live video feed available) but that's so 20th century. Being that our horses race in WA where there seems to be absolutely no urgency to upload videos, I used to rely on watching them through my family's Tabtouch account which was updated straight away with the videos. They've now blocked the ability to watch replays outside of Australia - even if I use Hola or another IP blocker (so stupid).

There has to be another way to view them without needing to pay for Sky racing or the like. Anyone know an IP blocker that will work with tabtouch? It's so frustrating needing to wait until afternoon on my Monday or even Tuesday to watch my own horses race. I shouldn't have to wait until they're uploaded to harnessweb or harness.org.au to watch. THIS IS SO DUMB!!!!! How is it possible to watch bloody trials in NZ the same day but can't watch my own bloody horse race?!?

I have not. I wonder how difficult it'll be being abroad... do you know how long it takes them to upload the videos? I like tabtouch because it's pretty quick. Otherwise I'd just 'try' to be patient and wait (usually after much swearing and sitting on my hands trying not to flip the bird at my laptop)

Try a VPN , I use PIA and can watch the live stream on tabcorp via the Melbourne server. It should work from anywhere in the world. If you just want audio try the sport 927 website. Good luck.

I thought that was always the case Katie. Even better than that - register for HarnessWeb (see under SERVICES tab on HRA)
When you do a Horse Search - for a stallion when you hover on the Horse tab you will see Service Summary and from that page you can click on Details and see their book in complete detail

Perhaps on harnesswrb, but HRA through harness.org.au hasn't had services. Just the final service if a mare slipped etc I'm pretty sure. I thoroughly check (stalk) our horse's breeding and have only just noticed the detail of all services.

I use my dad's harness web ;) he doesn't know. I tell him off when he hasn't nominated enough heh

Chasing lifetime driving stats for the Veteran Drivers Trot at Bendigo on November 11 we used
the stats from 1980 on the Harvet System.. obtained by request from HRV racing office are probably accurate.

Before 1980, I used a combination of The Age Trotting Celendar ( from 1948) Year Books and TCB Gazettes.
Its quite taxing...and not necessariily accurate/
We plan to check our nefound records with the veteran drivers: Brian Gath, Graeme Lang, Jim O'Sullivan, Noel Shinn, Dick Lee, Peter Manning, Cliff Powell, Bill Spitiri, Ginger Gleeson, Graeme Whittle. Keith Pratt on the night.
Brian Gath leads the group, and according to accumulated sources up arounf 3,350 wins

Heartbreak City (2nd place Melbourne Cup) two of last three were over the hurdles.

Just no staying talent in Australia.

The only Aust bred Melb Cup horse was by a sprinter out of a dam by a sprinting sire.

There is definitely a lack of staying talent in Oz but as far as UK hurdlers go, they are not looked down upon like they are here because it is a very serious season over there contested by quality horses

G Lang has indicated he will stick with Team Stewart who have given him drive after drive on good horses. I think he will go with Guaranteed. Not even driving Restepo sat night - driving Yankee Rockstar.

Restrep is the interesting one. I thought Gav may have hopped on him and not Yankee Rockstar and even perhaps chose Restrepo over Guaranteed for the final. Chris Alford would be going with Lennytheshark, so who gets the drive there. G Hall will be on Boaz so not sure of the local WA drivers or a Vic - Pitt or Lee might get a good pickup drive?

Look closely at the race video of Race 6 from Charlton

Note the driver of Milady Denver, who had been one of the Clerks of Course up until that race. and if i'm not mistaken, in his jodhpurs and riding boots, after a quick change.

How did this transition take place?
During the long delay after the race crash in the preceding race Kate Gath and John Caldow seem to have left Charlton to drive at Ballarat that night, leaving 2 horses without drivers.
(The stewards report: As Kate Gath, driver of Manassa Sky, and John Caldow, driver of Mylady Denver, failed to remain on-course to fulfill their respective drives and elected to proceed to the Ballarat night meeting an inquiry was adjourned.)

So Glenn Douglas was recruited, ( Glenn Douglas trainer of Half Crown Gap in this event was allowed permission to drive Manassa Sky due to exceptional circumstances in that their were no other available drivers) and so was one of the Clerks of Course !

The result? Glenn won the race, while the Clerk of Course/driver copped a fine of $100 for "lack of control". That's a bit tough !

Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) has signed an information sharing agreement with the RSPCA.
HRV Chairman Dale Monteith said they had acknowledged animal welfare must be at the forefront of all decisions and this landmark agreement would strengthen ties of communication between the industry and the RSPCA.
“The sharing of information between RSPCA and HRV investigators ensures open communication between the two organisations, who share a common goal in regards to the important area of animal welfare,” Mr Monteith said.
“We are pleased to be able to announce this agreement today. HRV is as serious about animal welfare as the RSPCA and this decision will be welcomed by the harness industry.”
RSPCA Victoria Chief Executive Officer Dr Liz Walker said the information sharing arrangement would help to ensure animal welfare was a priority within the harness racing industry.

Note the driver of Milady Denver, who had been one of the Clerks of Course up until that race. and if i'm not mistaken, in his jodhpurs and riding boots, after a quick change.

How did this transition take place?
During the long delay after the race crash in the preceding race Kate Gath and John Caldow seem to have left Charlton to drive at Ballarat that night, leaving 2 horses without drivers.
(The stewards report: As Kate Gath, driver of Manassa Sky, and John Caldow, driver of Mylady Denver, failed to remain on-course to fulfill their respective drives and elected to proceed to the Ballarat night meeting an inquiry was adjourned.)

So Glenn Douglas was recruited, ( Glenn Douglas trainer of Half Crown Gap in this event was allowed permission to drive Manassa Sky due to exceptional circumstances in that their were no other available drivers) and so was one of the Clerks of Course !

The result? Glenn won the race, while the Clerk of Course/driver copped a fine of $100 for "lack of control". That's a bit tough !

Looks like the stewards had a change of mind as in the steward's reports now, the driver of Milady Denver ( the Clerk of Course) received a caution for lack of control

I am still failing to understand why drivers bounce about and lay back in the cart when trying to get their horse over the line? Imagine pulling a wheel barrow and having the pile of manure bouncing about and trying to walk faster and straighter.

I'm willing to change my mind if someone can explain the benefits (Tried it in fast work on our racing ones after watching the US drivers on those stallion videos they used to mail breeders.. didn't work. Pretty sure the horse laughed its ass off to its mates about the drongo in the cart when it got back to the stables)

Can we start a movement to de-cool it and make drivers who do it laughing stocks?

There are drivers over here Katie that don't seem to care how much they get fined. They still lean back. Sometimes they get fined , sometimes they don't . I have always said if you want to drive like the Yanks go to America. BYE BYE.

Here in NSW, and I imagine it would be Aus wide, the drivers are permitted to lean back some degree but not too far! Cannot find the article outlining the limits for clarity, perhaps someone else may have a better memory than I :)

I think you will see a fair bit of leaning back at Menangle tomorrow, noticed Andy McCarthy id down to drive a few, must be home from the states for a holiday, pretty sure if you don't lean back over there you don't get a drive! personally I think its unsafe due to limiting your vision more than anything else, there is no doubt it will reduce air drag, however, how much effect that has I don't know, I've heard the argument that leaning back reduces the weight on the horse, but it doesn't, it simply transfers that weight onto the wheels which in turn negates the "benefit".


Bouncing around in the cart is for mugs I reckon, the wheelbarrow analogy Katie used is very similar to my own "water in the wheelbarrow sloshing around" explanation........cannot POSSIBLY help the horse and most likely will hinder it.

Danno, I agree with most of your comments but lifting the weight off the horses back and transferring it to the wheels will allow the horse to got faster. It's much easier to pull a wheelbarrow with 100kg in it than carry the whole lot on your back.
Another thing with the leaning back is that it forces the horse behind to stay further back thus giving the one in front an advantage when the sprint goes on. So it should be stopped.

Thank you Trish. I tried it but it only gives recent results I believe. I wanted the overall results for a couple horses but it's OK. Ill just need to regularly search :)

Is North American racing hard? Some topline horses that raced one of ours are over there (Machtu and Classic American) and they won a couple but don't have as much success as here. It's also interesting to see how many NZ horses are over there. Just saw that Classic American raced Wyndberg Courage, Stateman and Our Jerry Lee. 4 Kiwis in one race

There's this really good horse in the West called Rub Of The Green. Fantastic front runner who is quite unbeatable if it draws well - which is great for it, because in its last 10 starts, it's drawn 2, 1, 8, 1, 9, 1, 9, 2, 4, 5. Four Leaf Clover up its butt or what!
This contrasts with our horse Three Blind Mice which has drawn 12, 9, 10, 9, 10, 5, 4, 2, 10, 6, 7, 7, 8 in its past 13. This is for purely RBD Mobile races, and excludes any Preferential barrier draw races based on C or M class, $won etc as that would sway the numbers. Poor Mouse - it makes me laugh/pout/cringe how unlucky he is. :(

I wonder if there is a record of the luckiest and unluckiest horses random-barrier-draw-wise in Aus. Our ones in NZ draw terribly an uncanny amount and I'm getting very suspicious of it over there that it's not as 'random' as they make out... I might make a chart.

Not in my opinion, Kev. Unless every single horse in those RBD races keep racing against one another in all "5 or so races" and share it around completely evenly, that system wouldn't work. Random means random. So good luck/bad luck. It's random.

I remember two trainers used to tell me they drew poorly all the time in RBD races. I looked up the stats and it turns out both of them actually had well above average good barrier draws in RBD races. They were shocked, but the stats were hard facts. Stats don't lie.

Bad luck in races or at the barrier draws is annoying for those on the wrong end of it, but that's racing IMO. Always has been.

So you can have a horse drawing 4, 5, 7, 8 to even it out but when you drew 4 and 5 you had speedsters drawn to your inside and only ended up one out and four back anyway. Just keep it random. Not too mention 6 at Menangle is a bit different to 6 at Penrith.

Take R3 at Geelong tonight
and lets pretend that the previous starts numbers next to each horses name
are actually their previous barrier draws (I am doing this so that I can be lazy and just put up this snip)

We will total the last 4 supposed barrier draws for each runner

So their barriers have been and the totals are
1 - 4,8,6,9 = 27
2 - 5,1,8,7 = 21
3 - 5,3,3,3 = 14
4 - 1,4,3,5 = 13
5 - 9,4,10,6 = 29
6 - 9,5,1,10 =25
7 - 9,7,4,5 = 25
8 - 4,4,2,2 = 10
9 - 8,6,4,6 = 24
10 - 2,2,4,6 =14

So worst total under this system should have got barrier 1 down to lowest total copping barrier 10 - see new Red numbers on Snip
The biggest problem I see it having is that the longer it is in place, the more horses will have pretty much the same totals (and splitting according to their last barrier will be used)

C1/C3 PBD C. As a C1 they knew he would draw close to the inside against horses he is better than. Good placement.

“He is a nice horse and works as good as any of my horses,” Tritton said.
“He is a bit on the back foot compared to some of the other horses just having his first start back the other day but he will be ready for the Chariots.”
Anything For Love is racing at Menangle on Tuesday.

On form he would have to be 33 to 50/1 but probably will start at 25/1. Flaming Flutter from barrier 2 on last run would be 15/1.

Bucket List beaten 12m Interdom and a length by Hectorjayjay in Heat. Have a look at the replays of his also rans and see him get stuck behind slow horses due to bad draws - last week is a prime example. Won't happen from gate 2 this week. The Bucket List is $9 in early markets ... love to see this 25/1

Rod, flaming flutter has not won a race for a year ...lo and behold it was the SA pacing cup. Bucket list not only got into the race, he drew 2 but he wont run a zac in this race even though BB and the Bull have drawn wide. He has never beaten any of the horses in this field and it is a cop out that he gets stuck behind slow horses.

Whilst Lazarus continues on his winning way it may be worth noting the performace of the horse who got closest to beating him as a 3yo last season on any number of times they met. When you compare the performance of Lazarus on a roomy and fast 1200 metres Addington in the NZ Cup running a world record 3:53.1 for 3200metres off the front in a stand start. Mile rate 1:57.2, 800 in 55.3 and 400 27.1 against the cream of the crop.

Yesterday on the egg shaped 1000metres track at Invercargill, the aforementioned horse Classie Brigade ran 3200 metres off 30 metre handicap 3:53.5, mile rate 1:57.4, 800 in 55.3, 400 in 26.5 Naturally a track and race all comers record

Hughie Green, wow, well that was an effort in defeat on Friday night.....


All the work 3 wide/breeze and beaten by talented Three Ways who had the cold sit on them. wins because Heavenly Trend wasnt going well enough to hold the back of Hughie to keep Three Ways in. Great performance.

Watch the yellow colours horse behind the green colours horse as he moves out from the rail around horses (I'm Entitled) in this race from the 2:30 to 2:40 mark. Is that legal? Nothing noted in Stewards Report but seemed like the driver barged the outside horse out of the way.

Just a gentle nudge, the race caller even said that the horse was unlucky !!!!! It would never have beaten the eventual winner.

Saxon Warrior was declared a non-runner in the listed Tontine final at Hamilton today. You have to wonder whether the starters are under pressure to get them away on time (with races breathing down your neck) as it was clear that Christmas Jolt galloping in the score up cost SW a good length and any possibility of settling anything but last

I think you are correct in what you are saying about the big three, so what happens to those folk that breed that can not afford those sires???
